The revolution is over.
It’s time to start shaping a better nation.
Early Days (of a better nation) is a new interactive theatre show by Coney. It puts the audience in charge of building a new society, from the ground up. It’s about how we, the people, want to be represented, how we decide what’s important, and how we get on with the neighbours.
“Early Days is a brave, bold swipe at creating an inclusive and galvanizing political experience.
The sheer complexity of it is breathtaking."
Jo Tyabji for Open Democracy
Early Days is being made by Coney, masters of interactive performance, to be performed and toured in the UK (and maybe across the world) from autumn 2014. Over the last 18 months we’ve been working with academics, audiences, the general public, young people, charities and more to understand how we feel about the political systems that influence our lives. We’ve been amazed by the passion that comes out when people are brought together and given a platform to imagine how things could be.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?
Now we need help to finish turning the ideas and experiences we’ve gathered into fully formed characters and stories to sit at the heart of the show.
Each of our performers needs to understand the detail of a range of political arguments, to make sure they can facilitate, challenge and inspire our audiences in the final show, improvising and responding the to different decisions made on a night-by-night basis. When it's complete, the show will tour across the UK playing to audiences of 80 people each night.
Our aim of £3000 will enable 6 performers and our creative team to immerse themselves in the content of the final show for an intense development phase, with an opportunity for our biggest supporters to experience the results in an intimate workshop performance.
The development and testing of Early Days so far has been made possible thanks to the fantastic support of our co-commissioners Warwick Arts Centre, National Theatre Wales and Battersea Arts Centre, and our production development partner, Cultural Institute at Kings College London.
JOIN US ON THE JOURNEY
All of Coney's work is interactive - meaning we take audiences on a journey with us an genuinely respond to their actions and ideas. Our Kickstarter campaign will be no different. We'll keep you up to date with the show every step of the way and will be interested to hear your thoughts and ideas about what could happen next.
We've put together some exciting rewards for your support - all of them exclusive to our Kickstarter backers. We can't wait to get started!
Risks and challenges
Coney have been making brilliant, inspiring work since 2006. We've been a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England since 2012. And we've just finished a major 2-year collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces. So we've got a track record of creating work that inspires adults and children with the big ideas of the world.
Early Days is indeed a big idea and we'll need to find further support to make the final piece. But as long as we reach Kickstarter target, we'll be able to move on to the next stage of developing the show.
When developing new shows, it's always possible that ideas just don't work. Coney have already completed a couple of tests of Early Days, so we're already far enough into development to know there's a really exciting show based on some brilliant ideas. This campaign is all about gathering support for the next level of work and hearing from our supporters about what they think.
So, we'll keep in touch with you throughout the development. If anything unexpected crops up, we'll let you know. And we hope that you'll share your ideas and experiences with us in return.
