Hello. I’m Tassos Stevens, I’m director and a maker representing Coney. Coney makes all kinds of play - theatre, games, adventures - where people can take a meaningful part, our projects taking place anywhere people can connect and gather. And we’ve run successful kickstarter campaigns for three of our projects - Early Days (Of A Better Nation), Adventure One, and REMOTE.
But this is an extra-ordinary campaign, for by and with an extraordinary person, Bernie De Koven.
For me, Bernie is a jedi master of play. His writings and philosophy have had extraordinary influence on me and my practice, and on so many other makers and players I know. Everything I’m working on right now owes something to Bernie’s light and wisdom.
But Bernie knows he probably doesn’t have so long left to live, having received a diagnosis of a terminal cancer a few months ago. When I heard the news, I wrote to him and we started talking about his legacy.
I’m making a road trip to visit him in his home in Indianapolis. We’re going to exchange about life and play, and make various documents of those conversations.
But we’re also going to make a game together. A game about legacy, evoking what it means to pass something on to someone else. And a game as a small legacy of our conversations.
Brilliantly, beautifully, we don’t know what the game will be just yet. As you never do, until you start making it. But perhaps, if you like, you can imagine receiving a parcel in the post, and opening it up, without knowing just what you will find inside.
We’re doing this kickstarter together to raise funds for the material costs of making and distributing the game, and for paying any external collaborators. Mine and Coney’s time is already covered.
But we’re also doing it because kickstarters give you permission to ask people to spread the word, to build a network around an idea, perhaps the ground in which a legacy can land and begin to flower. So please support this in whatever way you can, and help build a wider legacy for this extraordinary master of play.
Bernie De Koven
and an update with less than two days to go
Thank you so much for getting us already more than double our original goal. We had a week of amazing conversations devising together in Indianapolis at the beginning of the campaign. I’ve since returned to Montréal but skyping with Bernie, and...
...we know what the game is now :)
It’s a parcel posted to the host. You invite other players to join you around a table. Your phone will ring, and we’ll ask you to turn on a screen. And then to open together, in turn, a series of surprise parcels. Inside which will be... a game of legacy, which you will make and play (and laugh) together. While Bernie and I sit with you, in a moment together on a bench in a park in Indianapolis, connected to you all in play.
By backing this campaign you can receive a limited edition version of a game of legacy, posted to you in a parcel, ready to play. We’re collaborating with designers - visual, graphic, sonic, and digital - to make the contents of the parcel/s as beautiful as possible for this limited edition.
Thanks to the success of this campaign, we aim to produce in the future an online edition, with instructions for DIY parcel assembly, for wider distribution ensuring this game of Bernie’s legacy has as a wide a reach as possible.
But to be sure of receiving this beautifully-designed edition, back this campaign before it’s over... ;)
Risks and challenges
We're going to spend a week together in July in person devising the game, for which Tassos will then lead the making in continued communication with Bernie.
We've designed this process so that the game can be completed and imbued with Bernie's spirit, even if his health deteriorates.
The game is anticipated to be finished for September/October 2017, and will be produced by the team at Coney HQ. Coney is a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England, producing a core programme of activity alongside commissions. Coney HQ is the engine producing and facilitating that work, and with a track record of delivering three successful kickstarters, we're used to getting things done :)
We don't know *exactly* what the game will be yet *SEE UPDATE ABOVE, WE DO KNOW NOW :) - we want to keep that open until we're devising in person - but we have got about 5 different starting points already :) and a manifesto for the game shared between Bernie and Tassos with a pretty clear direction. But as we have decided to make the surprise parcel into a quality of the experience for the player, we're going to keep schtumm for now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
