A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

About this project
This project is about making and providing ways for people to make what they want. We are making a food safe, eco-friendly, re-usable molding putty that allows you to duplicate an object into edible treats.
It works like this:
Place the putty into the microwave. The 1.5 oz Putty takes about 15 seconds in the microwave. The 6 oz. takes a little over a minute to heat up.
It will be hot initially, so let it cool so you can handle it easily. Press it over the object you want to duplicate and let it cool. Chill the mold in your freezer will speed this up a lot. A 1.5 oz. mold can be chilled in about 5 minutes.
Pull out the original part and pour or press in your new casting material: chocolate, fondant, gelatin (Jell-O), etc. If you’re doing hot candies like sugar candies or isomalts, you may need to chill your mold for larger pieces.
• Use that mold to make as many pieces as you want, then re-melt it to make a new shape. Use and re-use it as many times as you want.
It’s like a 3D printer for the rest of us.
My mold making started about 20 years ago. I was making parts for my hobby rockets, and model airplanes, and trying to make molds. They were terrible: parts floated, bubbles formed, pieces stuck…and I was wasting a lot of money on molds. Each one of my failures was wasted. It got to the point where I was afraid to waste the material, so it would sit on my shelf until it went bad. This was no way to learn how to duplicate objects.
About 2 years ago, Shawn and I were trying to develop eco-friendly polymers for use in ComposiMold. At the same time, we were frustrated at the melting temperature limitations of ComposiMold. It was through this experimentation that we developed ImPRESSive Putty (we first called it ReMold Putty, but I was told that sounded too engineerish :) ).
In the meantime, ComposiMold was being used by more and more cake decorators and chocolatiers. The idea of a re-usable mold making material was very well received. The comparisons were pretty striking: you can buy a pre-made silicone mold for about $10 to $20, which is the same price as a container of ComposiMold that you can use as many times as you want. But they wanted a little more: many cake decorators like to use isomalt or other candies to make decorations, but ComposiMold couldn’t quite get to this temperature. Also, with ComposiMold it is difficult to make molds of lace and other spaced out objects because the ComposiMold would flow in and around the part making it a challenge to pour in your casting material. The ImPRESSive Putty solves these issues. Plus, it makes mold making incredibly easy.
So what can you make with Food Safe ImPRESSive Putty? A lot! From chocolates to fondants to Marzipan, to Jell-O. Lego into fondant pieces are popular. Jewelry into edible treats. 3D printed parts into chocolates. You can decide. You don’t have to purchase anymore pre-made molds. You can make your own, anytime you want. Small molds can be made in less than 10 minutes. Larger molds in less than an hour.
To make this reality, we need to complete the testing for food safe materials, obtain correct packaging and labeling, and produce the first round of materials. That’s where you come in. Please support in any way you can.
Risks and challenges
The formula/recipe has already been developed. We know the material works really well, but that's only the beginning. We need to obtain testing to determine what the shelf life will be and to ensure that anything that might come off is safe for consumption. We know it is, because all the ingredients are food safe, but we need someone smarter than us to confirm this.
The packaging is relatively simple. We will need to ensure that we meet the EPA regulations for food packaging. This is relatively straight forward, but it will require some design work.
To make the first batch, we will need to make it in a regulated and approved kitchen environment. We will make arrangements with an approved kitchen nearby for our first batches while we obtain certification in our facility here in Manchester, Maine.
We should (we will do our best to) be able to deliver any Food Safe ImPRESSive Putty before Christmas.
