About Doodle3D

Doodle3D is a very simple sketching tool enabling everyone to make his own drawing come to life with a 3D-printer. This way people can get familliar with the 3D printing technique not just by seeing how the printer works, but by creating something themselves! And all this without needing any knowledge of difficult 3D design programs. It'll allow you to create that much more with your 3D printer.

How does it work?

After creating a simple line drawing on an iPad or computer the user presses ‘print’. Layer by layer the printer creates a 3D object from the 2D sketch using plastic. This way you can print out your name, a symbol, just a simple doodle or anything you like within a few minutes.
But there’s more, you can make the 3D object more than just a stack of identical layers by sculpting and rotating the object. This way you can make a nicely designed 3D object without needing to make complicated blueprints! Works great for sharing your new 3D printer with the family!

Why are we doing this?

Although low-cost 3D printers are quickly becoming more available, low-entry barrier software is still quite uncommon. Even though 3D design programs are getting more user-friendly and accessible they still form a major barrier for widespread use of this technology.

The Doodle3D software is created by Rick Companje who works at FabLab Amersfoort and is a proud owner of a 3D printer. The idea of Doodle3D came forth out of his personal experience with the entry barriers of 3D design programs.

Doodle3D WiFi Box

The Doodle3D WiFi Box is a WiFi device connecting your iPad/iPhone/laptop or other devices to your 3D printer. Simply connect the 3D printer (currently Ultimaker, open-source MakerBots, Printrbot ) to the USB port of the Doodle3D box, connect to the WiFi network and start sketching and printing in 3D.

The Doodle3D software runs on the device itself. Just connect to it through your browser. Make a sketch, change it to a 3D shape through the user-friendly interface and simply press Print. Your 3D printer will immediately start printing your Doodle3D design.

If you don't have a printer yourself you can take your Doodle3D WiFi Box and hook it up to a friend’s or Fablab/Makerspace compatible 3D printer and start printing as soon as you finish designing your doodle. No need to install any software applications or programs!

Doodle3D allows you to create:

  • Hand drawn 3D printed illustrations
  • Characters, creatures, tabletop-props
  • Decorative art, make doodles for your Christmas tree come december!
  • Patterns, stencils, logo’s
  • Go creative and design a bunch of your own alphabet letters or print a full font.

And much more, it is up to you!

www.pcmag.com has some beautiful photo's from 3DEA's pop-up store NY where the early version of our Doodle3D software was being used. For license reasons we can't show them here, but feel free to check them out: http://tinyurl.com/d8on2o5

Doodle3D compatibility

The Doodle3D WiFi Box aims to connect any wireless drawing device to any 3D printer. We will try to support as many different drawing devices (computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones) as well as many different 3D printers.

Which devices we manage to support depends on how open their format is. If you have an open-source 3D printer we're almost sure we can support your printer since we can find out how to communicate with it. If you own a commercial closed source printer it might be more difficult.

Printers going to be supported so far by the Doodle3D WiFi Box:

  • Bukobot
  • Cartesio Cyrus
  • Delta RostockMax
  • Deltamaker
  • EventorBot
  • Felix
  • Gigabot
  • Kossel
  • LeapFrog Creatr
  • LulzBot AO-101
  • MakerBot Replicator2
  • MakerBot Thing-o-matic
  • MakerGear M2
  • MakerGear Prusa
  • Makibox
  • Orca 0.3
  • ORD Bot Hadron
  • Printrbot
  • Printxel 3D
  • Prusa I3
  • Prusa Iteration 2
  • RepRapPro Huxley
  • RepRapPro Mendel
  • Rigidbot
  • RoBo 3D Printer
  • ShaperCube
  • Tantillus
  • Ultimaker

Please inform your 3D printer's manufacturer and other 3D printer users on forums and mailinglists and tell everyone about the great potential of the Doodle3D WiFi Box.

We need to acquire/borrow, test and develop for any device we want to get compatible with, and support them in the future. If we manage to get past our initial goal we will work towards increasing Doodle3D’s WiFi Box compatibility with more types of printers and devices. Please help us get there!

Doodle3D stretch goals

When we manage to exceed our initial goal we will announce stretch goals. These goals will be new features or new applications to be used in combination with the Doodle3D WiFi Box. We can't wait to announce our additional goals so please help us by pledging.

Doodle3D WiFi Box Limited Edition

We'll be making 20 limited edition pieces of the Doodle3D WiFi Box. A custom exterior design of 3D printed parts with the Doodle3D logo. We are currently looking at which types of materials we can use for this edition.

Where are we?

The beta-version of our software has been used for the past few months in various workshops and events in the Netherlands. We even had a collab with 3DEA and Ultimaker to bring Doodle3D to 3DEA’s pop-up store in New York last january.

There are still quite a few bugs to smash and quality-of-life additions to make to the basic versions and well as making sure that we are able to facilitate a good functionality on all platforms we want to support at the 50.000 dollar goal. We'll need to do extensive testing and developing for the various different printers and devices.

For the production of Doodle3D WiFi Boxes we are working with South-Korea based TP-LINK who provides the basic hardware. Because we are working with a large established company for this item scalability will not be an issue.
