From the pages of a Commonplace Book
This set of 78 tarot cards originates from a period of study and meditation and over 25 years use of Tarot. This spring, with the help of Kickstarter, I created the Commonplace Oracle deck, a collection of interlinked linocut illustrations derived from a lifetime of sketches, old photographs, notes and observations.
Taking inspiration from the experience and the encouragement of others using the oracle deck, I have been working hard to create my own interpretation of the traditional tarot deck, and am delighted to launch this, my second Kickstarter campaign.
As with the oracle deck, this Tarot collection is named ‘commonplace’ after its method of collation. Using the age old convention of 22 cards in the Major Arcana and 56 suit cards, The Commonplace Tarot will comprise original illustrations from my commonplace book which will then be transformed into an edition of linocut prints and then printed digitally.
About the deck
The Commonplace Tarot deck reflects animals, plants, icons and familiar stories known by the common man and woman; and sometimes unknown mysteries. Taking the somewhat hierarchical structure of the traditional Tarot, which depicts royalty, the clergy and nobility through its suits, this deck merges the familiar strata evident in traditional forms, such as the Rider Waite and Marseilles Decks, with a narrative derived from folklore, personal experience and an appreciation of the natural world.
Although they show a personal interest in magic and the environment they are designed to be deliberately recognisable and intuitive to interpret. Commonplace can also mean a memorandum - something to be frequently consulted or referred to, which is intended to be the case in this instance.
In order to create a larger edition, the original linocut prints will be made into a bespoke machine made deck on quality 300gsm smooth card stock for easy shuffling and dealing, presented in a bespoke tuck box.
What will the Commonplace Tarot Deck be like?
Like the Commonplace Oracle Deck, the imagery is intended to hold big energy and will hopefully open doors to new patterns of thought, comfort and inspiration. The deck will be sized 70mm x 121mm (2.75"x 4.75")
For this Kickstarter, there will be around 500 decks made and they can be pledged for in various different ways - either with accompanying original prints and a project bookmark, or just on their own. There are also opportunities to pledge for bulk orders of 10 or 20 boxes of the deck, with 10% and 20% discounts respectively.
Bonus Commonplace Deck
I'm incredibly pleased to also offer a machine made version of the original Commonplace Oracle deck. Available here either as a dual pack with the Tarot deck, or as part of the deluxe package containing a Commonplace bookmark and print. Also printed on the same quality card stock, this deck will be sized as closely to the original handmade edition at 44.45mm x 63.5mm, (1.75"x 2.5") and contained, like the Tarot deck, in its own tuck box.

The entire deck will be sourced from original linocut prints, some of which will be available to purchase here as part of the Kickstarter campaign. The Commonplace Slimvolume is a very limited edition of original works, depicting the illustrations made for the 22 Major Arcana Trump cards. Printed on Fabriano Paper or similar 200gsm paperstock and presented in a handmade wallet.
NB: I'm currently making a linocut print poster for pledges and will update this page with a picture soon. It will be approx A4 and printed on good quality paper.
Risks and challenges
Having learned lots about printmaking to order from producing the Commonplace deck, I feel confident that this deck will be available by mid-end October. I aim to run this Kickstarter Campaign throughout the summer to have it ready for shipping in the Autumn. I have nearly completed the illustrations for the Major Arcana and estimate it will take me 2 months to work on the trump cards and produce artwork for the manufacturing process. I have already sourced a good custom card company, from which I have made detailed estimates and made a budget. These costings have informed the amount I arrived at for my target of £5000.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
