I've been fascinated by the legend of Beowulf ever since I first read the classic, epic poem in junior high. This was no ordinary reading assignment. This was more like a comic book. And after completing my first graphic novel, Phileas Reid Knows We're Not Alone, and I began looking for my next project, there was no other story that I wanted to tell more than that of Beowulf and his epic battle against the demon Grendel.
Beowulf tells of a hero of legend that has the strength of ten men in each hand and that has never lost a battle. He receives word that a kingdom to the south has been besieged for twelve winters by a blood-thirsty beast that stalks the moors with a taste for man-flesh. Beowulf takes his most trusted retainers and sets sail for the forlorn shores of the Shieldlands to ease the king's mind and to end the monster mongering death in his land.
Along the way Beowulf will encounter more than just Grendel. He'll face sea brutes, lake beasts, bog witches, and eventually, a monstrous evil more fierce than Grendel himself.
The Monstrous Adventures of Beowulf is a mature-rated trilogy of 36-page comics adapted, written, drawn, lettered, and colored by me, Marc L. Thomas. This campaign is for the first two books in the trilogy with the third nearing completion and scheduled for release later this year.
Books 1 and 2 are already complete and are ready to go to press. They've been colored and lettered and are literally setting in my outbox ready for printing. I'll be using MIXAM Printers where the books will be printed and shipped right here in the US.
So how can you support bringing this bloody adventure to life? Choose a reward that works for you, put down your two bits and wait for your books to arrive by the end of May, 2019.
Want a sneak peek at the art inside? What follows is just a taste of the bloody good time that awaits all that crack the spine of legendary story.
But what about international backers? So shipping costs on even flat-rate envelopes is still too expensive for me to offer physical copies to international addresses at this time. I will be reviewing new shipping options in the future but for now, international backers and anyone else not looking to add another physical copy of a book on their shelf can choose one of the digital options below. Not only will get the books before anyone else, you can also get them at a lower price!
Have a little more coin to throw around and want to see your surly (or angelic) mug drawn into the pages of Beowulf's legend? Book 3 is nearing completion and I still have time to add 5 fortunate backers into the book where your song will be sung for eons to come.
Many of you have asked about more slots for being drawn into the book and since we are in the last week of the campaign and still haven't reached our funding goal, I'm opening 5 new slots for this reward. 5 more lucky backers now have the chance to be drawn into Book 3 which is nearing completion and will be available this fall.
You asked for original art and you'll get original art. Choose from the options below to get your hands on some of my original art, whether it's a commissioned 8 x 10 featuring a penciled and inked bust of the character of your choice or one of five original penciled pages from The Monstrous Adventures of Beowulf.
The five pages listed below correspond to a reward on the right. Just match the reward to the page you like and help bring this monstrous adventure to life!
So what is the timeline for this campaign? The Kickstarter campaign will run through 8 p.m. on April 30, 2019. From what I understand it takes about two weeks to receive the funds from Kickstater at which time I'll send the press files to print immediately. The printer has about a week turn-around time for printing and delivery so I'm hoping to have the books in-hand by mid May, 2019. As soon as they arrive, I can begin mailing them out and hopefully they'll be in backers hands by the end of May, 2019 or the beginning of June, 2019.
So where are the funds going? Have a look at the breakdown below.
So what about the risks? Well I hope there are none. I've successfully completed and delivered a Kickstarter-funded graphic novel once before. We even received more funding than we originally asked for because of the amazing backers that took a chance on us. And so with the extra money raised, instead of pocketing the money, we actually put that additional money into the book by upgrading it to a hard-cover and thereby delivering a better book than originally promised.
The second risk, as with any comic book project, is always production. Some campaigns ask for the production costs upfront to pay the writer, artists, letterer, and colorists. Well on this project, all of those people are me and I've actually completed the production of the books BEFORE starting this campaign, so there is no way the book would have any production delays.
What good is backing a kick-ass book if it arrives as if it's already been through war? That will not happen with these books. All books will ship in Gemini Comic Book Supply Flash Mailers. Click the link and check out the quality of their products first hand.
Thank you so very much for the support you all have shown me in the past and I really look forward to bringing the bloody adventures of Beowulf to you all this summer.
