About this project

Why A Coloring Book For Adults?

When you are a kid you have a very different relationship to art than you do as an adult. When you were younger, art was something you did. You drew. You colored. You painted. It was a hands-on thing. As an adult though, it becomes something you experience at a polite distance. You experience art either at a gallery, a museum or in a book. It’s something that other people do for you and you are expected to just enjoy it as it is and keep your hands off of it. I found I really liked the idea of presenting my work as a coloring book because it offered people a way to enjoy art both ways. They could just appreciate the drawings and the pretty women in the book as is, or they could color and draw in it too, and bring their own creativity to the experience. It no longer is just a “look but don’t touch” type of deal. You are allowed to actively participate with the art.

If you ever watch a kid coloring in a coloring book, you notice how their head gets into a totally different space. It’s almost like meditation. They just get so into what they are doing that everything else tunes out. When you are working on something creative, you get a break from the mental chatter. When you get older, you kind of lose that ability to do on your own for the most part. The noise inside your head gets louder. You start to depend on more external stuff, like TV, video games, music, books, etc. to get you out of your head for a while.

I’ve had a lot of my friends tell me they would love something like the Kinky Coloring Book, not just because they like the images, but because they like the idea of something they can play with. Not everyone can draw but everyone can color. There is a need for it among adults, because grown ups don’t often get to have this sort of playful fun stuff anymore. There was a famous line from Star Trek, “the more developed the mind the more importance there is for the simple pleasures of play”. Unfortunately, we are also told we need to put childish things away when we grow up. I believe the Kinky Coloring Book offers something to both sides of the issue. It is very much an adult book but offers the chance for youthful play. It offers adults an accessible and easy outlet for simple fun without spending hundreds of dollars on fetish gear.

How This All Got Started.

When I was growing up, the biggest passions in my life were art and comic books. I really loved the drawing styles of many of the great comic book artists of those days. I’d go to the local 7 eleven when I had the money and buy whatever I could that was on sale that week. Then I’d go home and spend hours reading and looking at them. Trying to copy the style and draw like Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, Gil Kane or John Ramona. A lot of my early art education came from those books, with their focus on the figure and bold black strokes and lines.

One day I was in the local comic book shop here in Tracy and was talking with the owner about doing an art book. He shot down the idea at first. Full color art books were very expensive to produce and he said that he never really sold a lot. I’d have to price it at twice of what the usual pin-up book was going for, just to break even if I self published. So that idea didn’t have any traction but then I started thinking about “what if I did it in black and white”? Many manga and independent comic books were done that way. That would be a lot cheaper to print. We could sell it at a price that was more attractive to the collector and still fill it with the bold, fun style of art we liked.

I didn’t want to do a graphic novel or a comic book though, something that was married to a particular character or story line. I wanted to do something that was just about the art. So I came up with the idea of the Kinky Coloring Book. A coloring book format would allow people to either enjoy it on it’s own or bring their own creativity and fun to it too. It would still make the focus the quality of the art but still be accessible to people at a lower price point.

Where are the monies from my Kickstarter pledges going?

A large amount of the monies will go to the physical aspects of producing the book, printing, shipping and storage. Then there is an amount that will have to go to legal and administrative expenses, such as ISBN numbers, copyright registration, domain names, etc. The rest will be used for PR costs and raising awareness of the book in the market place.

If successful, I hope I can establish a growing relationship with the community here at Kickstarter. To partner with you all to make some more wild and fun creative art for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for your time.
