Comics days in Vilnius is the first international comics festival in Lithuania that seeks to connect professionals of the field from Lithuania and foreign countries. Our goal is to promote the development and recognition of comics in Lithuania.
Comics have just begun making their way into Lithuania, since the country does not have its own comics tradition. We have few publishing houses that specialize in printing comics, graphic novels and zines, as well as promoting the comics culture. Although workshops for children and adults are rare in the country, many people are interested in this medium. Thanks to gifted local artists, comics are becoming better known to Lithuanians.
The festival is about bringing people to work together, collaborate in workshops and be inspired by lectures given by well-known comic creators from Lithuania, Latvia and France.
We believe that Comics Days is a significant event which will introduce to its public the history and main features of the culture of comics. The festival will also promote collaboration and experience exchange between Lithuanian and foreign artists. We expect the event to be of great interest not only for young people but also for families with children. The conferences and workshops would benefit young people who are interested in comics, inspiring them to seek new creative ideas. Workshops for children would be a simple and interesting way to learn how the relationship between text and image works.
During our festival we will have an exposition in which you will find all kinds of comic books in different languages! This is a great possibility to see in the practical way how wide and various is the comics medium. Next to it you will have an opportunity to purchase some incredible books which you haven't seen yet. Manga, graphic novels, zines, comic books from all over the world. Don't miss a chance to get one!
Our keynote speaker will be Thierry Smolderen, one of the best known comic theorists in France. He is in charge of the Master’s Degree program in Comic Art at the European School of Visual Arts in Angoulême. Some renowned Lithuanian comic book artists will share their knowledge in discussions with the Latvian Comics Association Kuš! which is successfully leading the comic culture in the neighboring country. The novelty of the ideas to be promoted in the festival might finally draw the publisherʼs attention to the issue of comics. The conversation with representatives of publishing houses interested in comics will shed a light on comic book publishing possibilities in Lithuania. The comics associations from France, Eina! and Fidèle, which specialize in self-publishing, will run workshops and present a drawing concert where the drawing process is accompanied by live music.
We want to embrace both the theoretical and the practical approach to have the festival achieve the most effective possible outcome. The French Institute in Vilnius has offered to host the festivalʼs conferences and discussions. The workshops will be held at Vilnius Academy of Arts.
Comics Days will be a bit different than other comics festivals – it will be free of charge for all visitors. Much of the festival will depend on the voluntary and priceless ingenuity of its organizers, guests and participants in order to make the whole thing come true. This means that we are depending on donations.
We need to raise funds to cover the airfare and other operating costs that we can't get through other means. So please, help us establish the first comics festival in Vilnius, Lithuania. With your support we can continue spreading the word about the comics medium in Lithuania and showcase different ways of creating art. This festival can be a great opportunity to launch a dialogue between publishers and the academic and artistic communities. It might serve as an inspiration to search for new ways of cultural exchange.
But we need your help, so please donate if you want to see a festival like this happening.
Publishers are looking for the new talents, and they are trying to foresee the readers desires.
Let's invite another independent artist who will share his knowledge and experience in creating comics!
Librarians understanding of the comics art situation in the comics field will be interesting not only for our festival's visitors as well as for the young creators. We would like to set up a meeting between a foreign comics librarian and our local librarians so he can inspire them.
We will offer some bunches of comics to some local public schools and high schools, in addition to inviting all the guests suggested above.

Risks and challenges
We are a small dedicated team making the efforts to put this festival together. Because the event has many different components, including conferences, discussions and workshops, it's a challenge to make sure that everything goes smoothly. After our project is funded, we intend to get all of the gifts out right after Comics Days! Luckily we have an enthusiastic group of volunteers who have already agreed to get it done in time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
