SONGS OF GIANTS is a collection of some of the very best poetry written by three giants of pulp literature; Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. P. Lovecraft.
Each of these authors is known for the incredible range of their visual imaginations. Worlds and characters came to colorful life in every one of their stories and poems, lingering in the wild imaginations of illustrators and readers alike. There is a long tradition of lovely illustrated books. Often these books are largely text with just a smattering of beautiful illustrations. SONGS OF GIANTS goes beyond that and is a feast for the eyes, with illustrations covering every page and featuring artfully placed text.
It was a wild time for publishing in the early part of the 20th century. This is when pulp magazines were kings of entertainment.
The Pulps produced three particularly impressive authors; Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and H. P. Lovecraft. The names of these legendary authors have echoed down through the years, inspiring many more creators. One such creator is the award winning and Hall of Fame illustrator, Mark Wheatley.

Working on his originals at a very large size, with a traditional brush, pen and ink approach, Mark Wheatley has invested over a year of his time into the creation of these elaborate illustrations, spending many, many hours living with these poems. And he has illustrated them in such a way that you will find yourself also spending long hours and days enjoying the worlds and characters visualized in these images and poems. Indeed, no one will be able to resist the sound and rhythm and beat of the drumming words to be found in these sensational poems.

Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 – June 11, 1936) is the creator of Conan the Barbarian, Kull the Conqueror and Solomon Kane, as well as a large and diverse cast of other memorable characters. In his short life, he managed to capture the imagination of a large number of pulp readers. Many of his works were not published until after his death and while Conan was popular during his lifetime, it was not until thirty years after his passing that Conan began to penetrate the mainstream as a staple of books, comics, films, television and games. He is credited as being the founder of sword and sorcery as a distinct fantasy genre.
Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) is best known as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, and the world of Barsoom; home to the heroic John Carter. He was a prolific author who turned out quite a few ongoing series that included stories of adventure, science fiction, horror, and westerns. His works have inspired generations of authors, artists, actors, filmmakers and game designers.
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) achieved a limited fame during his lifetime, writing richly inventive tales of horror for the pulp magazines. After his death his work continued to attract attention, partially due to his encouragement of other authors to set their own stories in the universe of monsters and gods that he had created. The Cthulhu Mythos has grown with each passing year and sent readers searching out his original works. As a result, his stories continue to be adapted for radio, television, film, graphic novels and games. In this way he has become one of the most influential authors of horror and weird fiction of our era.
Jack McDevitt (author of the introduction to SONGS OF GIANTS) is the Nebula Award-winning author of the Academy series and the Alex Benedict series. He went to La Salle University, then joined the navy, drove a cab, became an English teacher, took a customs inspector’s job on the northern border, and didn’t write another word for a quarter century. In 1971 he received a master’s degree in literature from Wesleyan University, and in 1980 he returned to writing when his wife, Maureen, encouraged him to try his hand at it again. Along with winning the Nebula Award in 2006, he has also been nominated for a Hugo Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the Philip K Dick Award. In 2015 he was awarded the Robert A. Mark Redfield is an American actor and filmmaker. Redfield's feature film credits include: Come Hell Or High Water (Justin Gatewood), Dark And Stormy Night (Farper Twyly), The Death Of Poe (Edgar Allan Poe), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (Jekyll/Hyde), and Cold Harbor (Roger). Television credits include: Armed Robbery Orgasm (as Ron–Channel Four, London), and In The Grip Of Evil (as Father Hughes–Discovery Channel) among many others. During his career he has acted in, or directed, over seventy plays professionally. As a devotee of Poe, his life and work, Redfield supports all Poe institutions around-the-world. Redfield is in production with an epic audio play biography of Edgar Allan Poe, called Alone: The Life Of Poe. The biography, with full cast of actors and guest stars, music and sound effects, will be available soon both as a deluxe CD set and on iTunes. Redfield has founded two successful theater companies; Industrial Strength Theater and New Century Theater, respectively, and has toured internationally. He received training in theater and film from Towson University, UNESCO’s Theatre Of Nation’s University, and The Actor’s Conservatory. He owns the production company Redfield Arts and makes his home on sets all over the world, but collects his mail in Los Angeles and Baltimore.
Jennifer Rouse is a sound designer, video editor, web designer and actress. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Towson University. She studied acting at Stella Adler's School Of Acting, and music performance, voice, and music theory at BCCC and The Peabody Institute. She wrote the film scores for The Death Of Poe as well as The Avenging Conscience. Jennifer's acting credits include the role of Helen Gatewood in the western drama Come Hell Or High Water, Mrs. Moran in The Death Of Poe, the role of Ice Cream Girl in Chainsaw Sally. Rouse has also appeared in Kevin MacDonald's State Of Play, Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, Touchstone Picture's Step Up and Step Up 2: The Streets, and the John Waters film A Dirty Shame. Television credits include Whiting's Secretary on season 5 of HBO's The Wire.
Mark Wheatley, Overstreet Hall of Fame inductee, has been awarded the Eisner, Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, Speakeasy and nominations for the Harvey and the Ignatz. His work has appeared in Spectrum, the Library of Congress, The Norman Rockwell Museum, and other museums. He has designed for Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, ABC’s Beauty and the Beast, and Square Roots, as well as Super Clyde, The Millers and 2 Broke Girls on CBS. His most recent print projects include Doctor Cthulittle, Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time, Swords Against the Moon Men, The Philip Jose Farmer Centennial Collection, Mine! and Wild Stars. Past creations include Breathtaker, Return of The Human, Ez Street, Lone Justice, Mars, Black Hood, Prince Nightmare, Hammer of The Gods, Blood of The Innocent, Frankenstein Mobster, and Skultar as well as Tarzan, Baron Munchausen, Jonny Quest, Dr. Strange, The Flash, Captain Action, Argus, The Spider, Stargate Atlantis, Torchwood and Doctor Who.
This book is planned to be a beautiful presentation of these wonderful poems with art quality printing to show each illustration to best advantage. Yet, there is always the desire to make the book ever better. With your help, if we are able to reach some of these stretch goals, we will be able to add a few exceptionally cool extras to the experience!

After meeting all these stretch goals, we will be more than happy to come up with a few more! And we will announce them should we need them.
Our initial goal of $5500 is intentionally set very low. This money will cover the cost of printing the book. From our past experience on Kickstarter, having successfully raised money for the DOCTOR CTHULITTLE book and fulfilled the rewards, we believe that hitting this goal is very possible and quite likely. If we do not hit our stretch goals, we will still have enough to print the book and we are in a position to ship the rewards with our budget. Of course, the stretch goals offer a good many perks that we would like to be able to share with our backers. And it would be nice if Mark Wheatley could make some money for the 14 months of work he has invested in the project. So, money from the stretch goals will cover the upgrades and go toward compensating the artist.
We believe strongly in the creative medium of the illustrated story and we know that this style of book is the best way to present SONGS OF GIANTS. However, illustrated books like this are rare these days and we feel that crowdfunding through Kickstarter is the best way to get the story into your hands while preserving its unique feel and artistic merits. We feel confident that once you have a copy of SONGS OF GIANTS in your hands, you’ll agree completely.

Risks and challenges
The risks are the usual sort to be expected in manufacturing and shipping books. We have been creating, producing, publishing and bringing books to market for decades. We have extensive experience and success. SONGS OF GIANTS is nearly complete at the start of March 2019. There are several poems still remaining to be illustrated. The introduction from Jack McDevitt is in house, being designed. The layout needs to be refined. Proofreading still needs to be done. This work is continuing during the campaign and will soon be complete. We expect to be able to have the book at the printer within 48 hours of the finish of this campaign. The time it takes for printing and shipping to our warehouse gives us a comfortable margin to ship to you before the end of June 2019.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
