Hello everybody! My name is Ian, aka Cometkins Art, and I'm an independent illustrator based out of Colorado. I frequently table in Artist Alley at conventions across the US, and decided it was high time I start to branch out and make something bigger than my usual merch fare.
I've grown to love Dungeons and Dragons since I started playing my home campaign over three years ago, and the Deck of Many Things has become the most tantalizing item, thus the idea sparked to make my own. I endeavored to create a version that appealed to my aesthetic needs, and hopefully to others! It's been two years in the making, and it's finally here.
100% of my Artist Alley merchandise up to this point has all been self funded. However, when it came time to do the math for these decks of cards, it became clear that I wouldn't ever be able to print and sell these at a reasonable price without help from crowdfunding. Thus, this campaign was born! What better way to get these decks into people's hands?
I first began creating the deck by making the Moon card, and it set the tone for how the rest of the Deck would end up. The final card I did was Throne; I saved it for last because I knew I'd need to learn more about how I wanted to paint these before I could get it to look how I imagined, and I'm satisfied. I challenged myself a lot with the art in the deck, made many revisions and tweaks, and it finally came together.
Each card has been illustrated to demonstrate both the name of the card as well as hint at the effect it has as best as possible. You'll notice the Moon card has three stars for up to three wishes, or that the Jester card represents the wealth of EXP you gain through gold coins. Each of the 22 cards is vibrant and colorful and is sure to impress your players when they pull from the deck!
As all of the artwork for the deck and add-ons is complete at this time, it should mean that this will be a fairly quick campaign! Crowdfunding will go on for 30 days, and then once funds reach me I'll be able to order everything in swift fashion. I estimate roughly a month of time to order and print all the rewards, and then several weeks to organize and ship everything out to you all; this should hopefully account for minor delays because of weather and holidays as well. I would like to have all decks and rewards out to everybody by late September (with the exception of commission tiers which I aim to have out by October), but everybody will be notified ASAP should that change.
I have set the base goal at $2500. This should account for the decks, shipping them to me, shipping for backers, and for any add-on rewards. It's a modest one to start, but I want to be sure that everybody can get their cards!
Below is a chart showing the rough breakdown of all the costs; the majority of the money is for the decks and add-on rewards, with the second biggest portion being for shipping costs (the curse of us all), and then finally Kickstarter and bank fees.
While the main product I'm offering is of course the Deck of Many Things, it never hurts to have some fun extras! There's not many so that shipping times don't get bogged down too much with waiting for products to arrive, but requests for more will be taken into account!
*NEW* Enamel Pin (+$12)
Newly unlocked by our amazing backers is a commemorative enamel pin! Made from high quality gold-plated metal, glitter elements and screen printing, this 2" tall hard enamel pin is sure to impress.
Drawstring Bag (+ $10)
The first of the add-on rewards is a matching drawstring bag. It's said in the DM's Guide that the Deck of Many Things is found in a drawstring bag, and it felt appropriate to include for those that want it. Store your cards inside for added mystery, or use as a traditional dice bag for all your dice goblin needs.
Set of Three Holographic Mini Prints (+ $10)
There's nothing quite like some sparkle in your life, and so I'm also offering a set of three holographic mini prints. They are 4x6 and printed on extra heavy cardstock with that glossy holo finish. The final pieces of art to be used for the prints will be voted on by backers, so think of your favorites now!
Custom Character Card Commission (+ $175)
Got a favorite PC or NPC that you'd like to immortalize as a custom card? This is the add-on for you! One card of your choice will be replaced in the deck with custom art of a character of your choosing, forever cursing or blessing your players!
At $3000 raised all backers will receive a set of three holographic stickers with their order! They will be of three cards of backers' choice, so start thinking of your favorites now!
At $5000 raised, backers will have the option to purchase a special enamel pin as an add-on reward. It will be hard enamel with gold metal, glitter enamel elements, and screen-printed stars, proving to be a lovely design. It will be $12 when unlocked.
At $7500 raised, ALL backers will have their decks upgraded to have gold edges completely free! They look absolutely magical in the box, and they add a hint of a mysterious sparkle when holding a single card.
At $8000 raised, all decks will be upgraded to include an instruction booklet on how to use the deck, how each card works, as well as a stat table for the Avatar of Death that is created by the Skull card. Way easier than pulling out your DMG every time!
Risks and challenges
With the decks and dice bags coming from factories in China, there could be potential delays in shipment due to weather or national holidays there, but extra precaution has been taken in the estimated fulfilment time to account for this. Another possible delay would be a larger volume of orders than expected; I'm just one person, and my base goal is small, but there's always the possibility that more people than anticipated will be interested in getting a deck of their own. Should this happen, I will recruit friends to help pack and ship orders to hopefully speed up the process.
There is a possibility of individual orders being lost or damaged in the mail by the postal service, but extras of all products will be ordered to account for this so that all backers can receive their items. Everything is being packed in secure, padded bubble mailers to reduce the risk of possible damages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
