Hextraction is a real time strategy game for PC / Mac / Linux and OUYA where you create your own unique Hextraction Mercenary Crew - harvesting resources, building structures, fending off enemies and exploring dangerous territories.
Hextraction was developed in Unity and was born from the 48 hour Global Game Jam competition in early 2014. In those 48 hours, we created a game that really took us by surprise and got us very excited! While the content you see today is just a glimpse into the overall experience, we believe it is able to convey the epic, action-filled adventure that the final game will take you on.
The core of the game is built on the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre by offering units to manage, resources to harvest, enemies to fend off, and worlds to explore. However, the game incorporates elements from the Role Playing Game (RPG) genre, allowing you to put together a unique team of mercenaries, each with their own set of attributes, abilities and personalities.
We've released our base player pod on Open Game Art (link below), so please feel free to check it out, play around and share what you created with us! We'd love to see what creative uses other game developers get our of it.
Hextraction full release will be available for Windows, Mac, Linux and OUYA. It will be released simultaneously on Steam and OUYA store, as well as a DRM-free download.
Alpha / Beta Backers participating in our alpha or beta offerings will be given private instructions on how to access a secure copy of the latest builds. We will not be participating in Steam's early access program at this time.
DRM Free Download When the full game is released, backers will be given the choice of either a Steam key or a DRM-free download for the PC, MAC and Linux versions of the game.
You play as the Mission Commander for a mercenary crew tasked with recovering a dense concentration of phantom energy from a planet teaming with hostile life-forms. As Captain, you decide which corporation to work for, who makes up your crew, which path to take and ultimately how to conquer each territory so you can secure the planet's resources.
You want to be the best crew in the galaxy, able to secure as many resources as possible while surviving the harsh, hostile conditions of uncharted planets. In order to prepare for your mission, you must perform three steps:
Step #1 - Choose your Corporation. There are many corporations in the galaxy to choose from and your selection will have a large impact on your progression throughout the game. Various upgrades, abilities, wealth and how well a corporation can negotiate are all major factors which come into play.
Step #2 - Choose your Captain. The Captain is the leader of your team on your team and powerhouse on the battlefield. There is great adoration and respect for the position which allows a captain to influence the crew, allowing them to gain benefits and bonuses when in their presence.
Step #3 - Choose your Crew. The heart and soul of every operation is the crew and you are responsible for picking the team that can get the job done.
Crew members come with a variety of skills and are split into three tiers: top, middle and low. Potential candidates in the lower tiers are numerous and can be hired for fraction of the cost, but are lacking in experience & skills. Whereas middle and top candidates will come equipped, but at a hefty price. Each crew member has a unique personality, gameplay attributes and the opportunity to gain experience which directly affects their skills.
How you select your team is completely based on personal preference and play style. Grab a couple of top ranked characters to accompany your captain, or a multitude of weaker characters in order to manage more tasks and roles. No matter who you choose, they will be responsible for exploring, constructing & repairing structures, engaging hostiles and most importantly, staying alive! Because if they should perish, they are gone for the entire game.
Your mission as a Hextraction Mercenary Crew is to conquer alien planets and strip them of their resources. Nobody said you had to play nice... sorry aliens, but this is our rock now and you're getting in the way of our rockets.
Complete one of two main goals. Either retrieve a specific amount of resources for your corporation from each territory, or conquer the territory by annihilating all alien presence. Basically you either build a mercenary stronghold or blow everything up, it's your choice.
Of course, every now and then you'll encounter a random story event where you'll be faced with an un-expected scenario! Perhaps you must rescue a stranded crew member, or maybe you find yourself amidst an alien breeding and their none too happy you're messing up their groove. With a massive collection of these unique, randomized story elements throughout the game, you'll never be sure what to expect.
As you complete missions, your team will grow stronger and you will be able to venture into more difficult territories. Exploring each new uncharted planet means bravely venturing into the unknown, which is why Hextraction is completely procedural. Every new game you'll be given a new crew, varying territories, randomized maps, and new stories to explore.
As you progress through the game, you'll advance through three main territories: geologic, biologic and crystallic. Starting in a barren wasteland of rocks, desert and minimal life, you'll make your way through lush alien forest full of diverse (and dangerous life) before finally moving on to a truly foreign landscape filled with terrifying, nightmarish creatures and landscape.
The highly unstable nature of the planet itself means not only will you be battling the aliens which inhabit it, you'll have to deal with earthquakes and asteroid strikes! No one told you stripping a planet of it's resources was going to be easy.
A successful Hextraction operation relies on well-built and maintained offensive, defensive, & mining structures.
Once a structure has been completed, crew members are able to add buffs in order to increase it's stats & effectiveness. What kinds of buffs you are able to apply and how they affect the structure vary based on it's type & function.
Operating a Hextraction mining operation doesn't come cheap, which is why structures are constructed on site by the crew with a single purpose in mind, often using the resources collected from the planet. Structures can be recycled in order to regain a small percentage of the original resources invested.
Your biggest challenge will be dealing with the endless waves of "filthy bugs" who seem to take pleasure in making operations difficult. These creatures come in a wide variety of types, each with their own unique brand of chaos.
We are ComboMash Entertainment Inc, an independent game company founded by Grant Moore and Neil Grey aimed at producing game projects close to our hearts. Neil Grey: Managing Director, Programmer With a professional background in mobile gaming, visual effects pipeline development and business, he's the technical and strategic core of the team. Neil co-founded ComboMash to bring his love of startups to life!
Mario Granillo: 3D Artist A fantastic 3D artist who has helped us pull off the impossible on a number of occasions, all while keeping an amazing attitude. We originally met and worked together at a game jam and since then has been an integral part of the Hextraction team!
Colin Grey: Community Manager Interested in pursuing a career in visual entertainment, Colin will be interning with us this summer to not only help run the Kickstarter campaign, but also to help us get a start on full production!
Andrew Bowers: aka DJ Dain, Music Producer With a Master's degree in Musicology and a portfolio of mixes ranging from country twang to trance beats to back it up, Andrew will be creating an awesome original soundtrack!
Power Up Audio, Sound Effects A partnership between Kevin Regamey and Jeff Tangsoc, these guys create beautiful audio and have a serious list of titles under their belt, such as. Darkest Dungeon, TowerFall, and Crypt of the NecroDancer.
Our release schedule is based on the core gameplay and we estimate that our full release date will be December 1st, 2014. We expect a playable alpha to be ready in August with beta releasing early October. Any stretch goals reached will be available after release as part of our free content updates.
Not only will you be getting the core content and any stretch goals we meet, but we are also planning to offer regular updates giving you new features and additional content well after the game has been released. Best of all, updates will be Free!
To get Hextraction to where it is today we have already invested significantly. We believe not only in our game but our ability to deliver and are putting our own money where are mouths are; Working full time night & day without pay, covering expenses out of pocket and pulling in much appreciated favours from friends.
We need your support to be able to make Hextraction amazing. Money raised will enable us to cover project expenses directly related to the game's production such as paying our partners, hiring additional help for key assets, production, etc...
If we raise funds above our target goal it will allow us to develop some of the stretch goal features which will enhance the core gameplay. Risks and challenges
Making a game is no easy task. We must face the reality and recognize the variety of risks associated with such an arduous goal. Here’s how we are dealing with each:
FINANCIAL RISK: We have invested in Hextraction ourselves and are prepared to do what is necessary to reach completion. Living on a bare minimum living allowance is the reality we have accepted and have been living while funding early production from our own savings. We wouldn’t be asking for support without having already invested in the game ourselves. We can complete it with your help!
SCHEDULE RISK: The completion date for the game is an estimate based on our experience completing similar multimedia projects in the past. If certain features take longer than expected to implement, there’s a chance the completion date will slip. If such an event happens, we will be vigilant to keep you, the backers, informed along the way. We plan to be releasing early alpha & beta builds to the backers who choose to participate, so even if final completion date moves, you’ll still get hands-on with the game before then.
FUN RISK: Let’s face it, we’ve all played something someone was excited about and it ended up being less fun than anticipated. This is why we believe in early access testing and a rapid prototyping development schedule. If something isn’t working, we will find out early on in our schedule and fix it, long before the game ever launches. We strive for quality, and fun is the key ingredient!
