Comics done right are true works of art.
It's time something in the art world reflected that! (No disrespect to Roy Lichtenstein)
I want to build a huge, functional glass comic book that will showcase just how amazing comics and graphic stories are...a comic you can practically step into...a comic that will make fans of graphic story proud, and hopefully make naysayers re-evaluate their position. This glass comic will have twelve 4 ft. x 3 ft. pages including the front and back covers. The pages will hinge on a free standing base that acts as the comic's binding. The design above is conceptual, likely some modification of the base and stand support will take place when the individual framed panels are constructed and weighed. All electricity will run from its housing inside the stand, under the hinges and into the frames. The pages will be quarter inch glass, etched in ultra-fine detail and lit with LED strips in various ways to create effects never before seen in a comic book. The lighting will be ensconced in frames that hold two pages together with a divider.
Etch and lighting test
The glass comic will tell the inaugural story of Comangra City...a city where COmics, MANga and GRAphic novels characters, along with the rest of the world's comic genres and character styles live and interact with each other in a multi-cultural setting. Comics in the broadest sense appeal to everyone everywhere. Nearly every country has it's own tradition of graphic story. It's time these traditions meet, mix and react. What will happen when magic, super powers, psychology and cultural norms of all varieties live and work amongst each other? Fund Comangra City and find out!
I intend for this glass comic book to go on tour. It will start out at ArtPrize 2011 with over 200,000 visitors. If it wins, the piece will go on to inspire hundreds of thousands every year in their permanent collection. If not, it will go on to visit comics conventions, museums and schools across the country. And if it's successful here in America, I even intend to construct some foreign language versions of the comic to go on display internationally.
If you'd like to know a little bit more about ArtPrize watch the video below. I'll also post a link to my Artist Profile when I've secured a venue...that process begins June 1.
I've done a fair amount of glass etching in the past. Most of the etching I do is by hand...very labor intensive...for example, this tree that I etched predominantly by hand for ArtPrize 2010.
My brother owns a custom glass business and has just about every tool I need for hand etching. Unfortunately, this project demands something faster and more detailed than hand etching...it calls for a laser etcher. The type of etcher I need for this project STARTS at $29,000. That's where my whole funding goal goes for this project. I know that's a huge goal, but I can't move forward without it. I know if I can make that much, I can find a way to make the rest happen. Of course I'd love it if we exceeded our funding request and could get a higher powered (higher wattage) version of the laser ($38,000), some extra materials to experiment with ($6000) and have some wiggle room to print up some marketing materials ($1000). That's a whopping $45,000. In the inimitable words of Winston Zeddemore, "That's a big Twinkie." So I'm sticking to the basic model and seeing what happens.
With the sincere hope of reaching and surpassing our funding goal, we've come up with some pretty unique rewards. Where else can you get comic book illustrations etched on glass and mirror? Where else can you get limited edition glass and mirror coasters with brand new, first edition characters etched on them? Where else could you send in your own work and get it etched, or commission us to create something specifically for you? Got some serious coin to blow? How about a power desk or a miniature of the glass comic?! We have LOTS of rewards. And we have something for every budget. But it's going to take you a little browsing. This little video will give you an idea of the categories of rewards we're offering...or you can just skip below and read the categories and browse the photos of the gifts we have prototypes for.
To cut down on any confusion, each reward will have a heading from one of four categories:
•PDF & PAPER- Electronic &/or print versions of the hand drawn comic. Mini-posters.
•ETCHINGS- Actual glass and mirror etchings of the comic. 3" x 4" up to 3' x 4'.
•FUN STUFF- Coasters, T-Shirts, Original Art, Dinner, a Power Desk & a Miniature of the World's First Huge Glass Comic.
•PLACEMENT & COMMISSIONS- Your name in the glass comic. Your work etched on glass. Or a commission etched on glass.
You can view static prototypes of the rewards below. We don't have finished copies of them in all sizes because, well, we don't have the laser etcher. The rep was nice enough to let us make these on a smaller etcher so you'll understand what you're are getting. In real life they look even cooler.
These are the images on the set of 4...
*PLEASE NOTE that if you choose anything etched on glass or mirror as a reward, YOU are releasing us from liability and accepting the responsibility for any injury you may incur as a result of handling the etching. If the glass or mirror are handled with care, you should have no problem. However, if dropped or mishandled, these etchings can shard and cut you. If you are not willing to accept responsibility for the minimal risk associated with handling glass and mirror, do not choose one of these rewards. We are looking into composite glass materials that do not shard or shatter and we reserve the right to substitute these materials if they are safer and maintain an appearance consistent with glass and mirror.
A note on timing: If we are funded by June 30, it will take at least two weeks for the laser company to assemble and ship our machine. I expect it could be as much as a month. Then I have two months to implement the design and construct the glass comic before ArtPrize begins in Grand Rapids MI. When the comic is done, I will turn my attention to the etched rewards. These we will get to you as quickly as possible, constrained only by volume. PDF and Print rewards will arrive in August...I am taking my time with the illustrations because there are some added aspects to this piece that I would like to reveal on the Comangra site and blog over the next couple of months. You will be able to get updated forecasts on delivery times as production advances.
I am really excited about this project. I think this glass comic is going to look amazing and inspire hundreds of thousands of people to take a second look at the power and beauty of graphic stories. I really hope you share my vision and help me to get this project done. YOU CAN ALSO FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @Googe1 for regular tweets on the project. I have two people helping me and together, we guarantee we'll make this a piece you can be proud of and get you your rewards as quickly as we can. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING US BUILD THE WORLD'S FIRST HUGE GLASS COMIC BOOK. THANK YOU FOR HELPING US BUILD COMANGRA CITY!!
