The Plastic Dilemma
Plastic can be an amazing resource. It's easy to use, inexpensive and is a great tool for producing quality products very quickly.
But we all know there's a dark side to plastic. Petroleum based plastics are bad for our environment, and most plant based plastics aren't much better. They're more sustainably sourced, but disposing of them is just as hard as dealing with petroleum based plastics.
We're Raising the Standard
Today, we're introducing the Bio-Series, our plant-based sunglass frames that are ACTUALLY biodegradable.
What does that mean? These frames will degrade on their own over time, but, even better, they can be composted (turned into soil). We'll be pairing these new shades with our "Unlimited Renewals" program allowing to you send back your old shades in exchange for half off a new pair. We will then take your old glasses and either recycle or compost the parts.
It's our worry-free sunglass disposal plan.
That's Cool, But where are they Made?
Glad you asked! We're super excited to be manufacturing the bio-series right here in the Rocky Mountains. A huge part of our mission is to create sustainable, living wage jobs in our community, and this is the next step in that journey.
That also means that the bio-series will be the first ever biodegradable sunglasses to be made in the United States (that we know of, and yes we've looked very hard).
Anything else I should know?
As a company we're huge on customer service. We've sold sunglasses to thousands of customers from all over the world and have made your satisfaction our top priority. The bio-series will be no different. They'll have our same beloved warranty that doubles as a recycling/composting program. You can find the full details a little further down the page, as well as some customer reviews so you'll know we're not just making up this whole customer satisfaction thing.
We Need Your Help!
Did you know over 95% of the sunglasses sold in the U.S. are manufactured elsewhere? Yep, our current products included. The reason is simple: there's a huge up-front cost that goes into manufacturing sunglasses that smaller companies cannot often afford. We're not exempt from that struggle.
The funds we're asking for are just enough to build our molds and produce enough glasses to properly reward our backers. Without you this product won't exist. With you, we can bring to life the first American made, biodegradable sunglasses.
Our shades will launch in four color options:
Okay, so let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: Where are all the pictures of the actual glasses?
We're using a material that isn't available for 3D printing, the only real prototyping tool we could use for this project, which means for us to build a real prototype we need this campaign to succeed. This is a true Kickstarter campaign, not a glorified presale.
So how do you know we can deliver?
We're using our current best-selling pair of shades as a base style (wayfarer), and modifying it a bit to make it a better fit for more people.
We're also working with a tool creator and manufacturer who have done this before so we're confident they can help fine-tune this and get this right.
Obviously seeing the REAL product is best, but for this time around all we can do is a few digital renderings.
We would love for you to check out some of our current products to get a feel for what we've done so far:
But enough with the apologetics. Let's get into the details about the product we're actually going to be creating.
The Frames: The frames will be made of a plant-based bioplastic that is both recyclable and compostable. They’ll be a medium sized, wayfarer style, designed to fit most faces. Don’t worry, they won’t decompose on your face. They’ll undergo an industrial composting process before degrading.
The Lenses: Our manufacturing partner has extensive experience in creating medical grade lenses. We’ll be using their patented lens creation technique to ensure our lenses are of exceptional quality and free of distortion. The lenses will be made of a high-quality polycarbonate and will offer full UV400 protection, with polarized lens options coming in the future.
The Hinge: In order to bring an affordable product to market quickly we’ll be using a hinge design that is built into the frame, rather than a traditional metal hinge and screw. The particular method we’ll be using also allows for quick and easy customization, giving you the ability to create nearly limitless styles by interchanging arms, fronts and lens colors.
These shades are designed to be a customizable, fun, affordable and extremely economically friendly option made right here in the U.S.A.
We believe strongly in providing a product with excellent long-term value which is why we’ve built in a warranty that doubles as a recycling program. We’ve been doing this with our wooden sunglasses for the last year and a half and will roll out the same program with this new line of sunglasses. Here’s how it works:
Unlimited Half Price Exchanges - Return your glasses to us at ANY time for ANY reason and we’ll give you a new pair for half price. It’s a lifetime, unlimited use warranty.
Lost/Stolen Replacement for half price - Left your shades at the beach? Got them swiped from your bag? We’ll give you one replacement at 50% off.
12-month manufacturing defect warranty - If your lens coating starts peeling, hinge or nose pieces come loose, etc. just let us know and we’ll take care of it free in the first 12 months.
We Deliver On Our Promises
As a company we’re no strangers to hard work, perseverance and commitment. We’ve been in business for 18 months, have delivered sunglasses to nearly 5,000 customers, and have a track record of excellent customer service. We’ve generated nearly ¼ of a million in revenue and our YOY revenue growth is nearing 300% (charts below for your viewing pleasure).
When it comes to customer service and meeting expectations, we’re not perfect but we’ve done our best. We’ve collected over 130 reviews on 3rd party review site Trustpilot.com with an average rating of 4.6/5. And yes, it's not all 5 star reviews. We believe in transparency and honesty. If you’d like to browse through them all (bad reviews included) we encourage you to do so here - Trustpilot.com. Below we’ve compiled a few reviews that we feel best represent us.
Bottom line: Running a company is not new to us. We’ve been delivering on our promises for almost two years and wouldn’t be bringing this project do you if we had any doubt about our ability to deliver.
We've been planning for months, but we still have a lot to do before we can get these eco-friendly shades in your hands.

Risks and challenges
There’s a lot that needs to happen before we have a product to deliver. Fortunately we’ve successful distributed over 4,000 pairs of glasses from our wood line so we have extensive experience in order fulfillment, customer service, etc. As well, we’ll be outsourcing the manufacturing to an experienced, Colorado based manufacturer which helps fill in many of our knowledge gaps.
REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: There are a few things we need to do from a regulatory standpoint to ensure the sunglasses (particularly the lenses) are certified for everyday use. Our manufacturing partner has experience in medical grade lens development so we don’t anticipate this being a problem.
SOLUTION: The big issue here is lenses. If the regulatory process becomes problematic we will begin by sourcing our lenses from another manufacturer.
TOOLING PROBLEMS: Developing a mold is an extremely expensive and time consuming process. There is a possibility that it may take longer than anticipated to get it right.
SOLUTION: We will send out regular updates as our project develops. We have a history of excellent customer service. If we can’t make our deadline we will find some way to make it up to our customers.
FULFILLMENT: If all goes as planned we'll be tasked with fulfilling more in a month than we normally mail in a year, which is clearly a challenge.
SOLUTION: We have a relationship with a local non-profit job rehabilitation program that has a strong order fulfillment department. We will be involving them or hiring additional help to make sure we can ship in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
