I'd love to take a moment to introduce you to my latest art book which has been over four years in the making. 'Welsh Monsters & Mythical Beasts' is an 89 page illustrated guide containing numerous creature profiles and legends accompanied by detailed ink and watercolour illustrations.
My name is Collette and I'm a full time freelance fantasy illustrator from Wales, a modern Celtic nation situated on the lower West coast of the British Isles. I grew up surrounded by the stunning countryside, dramatic landscapes, legends of King Arthur, dragons and tales of mysterious creatures that inhabited the land. Over the years I built a career through my art and have been heavily influenced by Welsh culture and inspired by fantasy, nature and ancient mythologies from around the world.
You may have heard of the Red Dragon (Ddraig Goch) featured on the national flag of Wales, but sadly here in Wales many of our other legends and mythical creatures are being forgotten over time. I felt so sad to see my culture loosing such an amazing array of stories and creatures, so it became my mission to bring them back to the forefront of Welsh culture and introduce them to a new generation and share our rich mythology with the world.
- 89 pages in length
- Approx 8.27 x 8.27 inches in size
- UPGRADED TO HARDBACK (VIA STRETCH GOAL)
- Printed cover with metallic gold foil filigree and text
I originally launched the 1st edition of this book in 2016 and I received an overwhelmingly positive response. The original book had to meet very tight deadlines and I always had this niggling feeling that it could have been so much more than what it was, still, people all over Wales started sending in even more legends of mythical beasts from their local areas. There was so much new material that naturally it inspired me to expand on the original book and create a second edition. So, I set out to recreate some of the original illustrations and add many more.
ADDITIONAL CREATURES & LEGENDS:
- THE ANNWNN (The Celtic Otherworld)
- TYLWYTH TEG (Fairy Folk)
- ELLYLLON (Elves)
- COBLYNAU (Mine Fairies)
- BWBACHOD (House Fairies)
- GWRAGEDD ANNWN (Water Fairies)
- GWYLLION (Mountain Fairies)
- CEWRI (Giants)
- CERNUNNOS (The Horned God)
- BWCA (Knockers)
- CWRACH Y RHIBYN (Hag of the Mist)
- MORGANS (Mermaids)
- CATH PALUG (Paulg's Cat)
Listed below are just a handful of changes that have been made to this new edition of the art book:
- Metallic gold foil cover artwork and text
- Expanded from 50 to 89 pages
- Existing legends and creature profiles have been expanded
- Original artworks have been enhanced or re-drawn
- Graphic design and typography has been updated

- Can be bought with an additional behind the scenes sketchbook
- New exclusive prints available

My name is Collette J Ellis and I'm a full time freelance fantasy illustrator from Wales, my work is hugely influenced by ancient mythologies and I love drawing dragons and mythical creatures.
In the past I have achieved an MA in Design Communication and have exhibited at various conventions across the UK; including London, Manchester and Cardiff. In October 2016 I opened my third solo exhibition in the Oriel Yuys Mon on Anglesey and have launched a number of successful Kickstarters, the first of which was the 1st edition of the book ‘Welsh Monsters and Mythical Beasts’ which sold over 1,000 copies in its first year.
Over the years I have worked on numerous publications for authors and album covers for musicians. I've been featured in several online blogs and magazines, including Imagine FX Magazine, 'Y Lle’ on Welsh TV channel S4C and have even appeared on the BBC ‘Wales Today’ Show.

- October 23rd - Kickstarter launch day
- November 22nd - Kickstarter closes
- January 2019 - Book edited
- March 2019 - Book completed and paid for
- April - Surveys sent out to backers
- May / June 2019 - Books dispatched
Please keep in mind that this is a rough guide, prep and shipping time can vary dramatically depending on how many books have been ordered. I will continue to keep backers up to date with monthly updates here on Kickstarter, but my goal is to have the books delivered by October - November 2019 at the very latest should I sell more than I anticipate in the schedule above.
To give you an idea of how the money will be spent should this project fund I have created a rough pie chart illustrating the costs involved.
The funding goal includes production costs, postage, packaging, prints, add-ons and additional fees including Paypal, Credit-card fees, Kickstarter fees and a cushion should additional costs arise, in my experience running Kickstarter campaigns there are always a few unforeseen costs.
Sadly due to cost, I'm unable to produce a bilingual copy of the physical book for this pre-order. However the Welsh language is incredibly important to me so if this Kickstarter goes well I intend to have the book translated into Welsh and made available in book stores and online by the end of 2019.
Please keep in mind that the writing for the book is 80% complete thus far and 60% of the artwork is complete. This Kickstarter will afford me the time and means to complete the book, it will also be receiving a final edit by a professional editor. I will be working closely with ExWhyZed Printing to ensure you receive the best quality product so I have allowed time for these final touches to be made.
Pledges will be shipped worldwide! Simply select your pledge option, your location and Kickstarter will calculate shipping for you! The price will include postage and packaging costs. All orders will be sent standard delivery. In the event of lost items, I will offer to resend your order once for free after 28 days of the items being sent; alternatively, you will have the option of a refund or Etsy store credit. Please note that I can only reship an order once if it is lost, if the second parcel is lost, I will not be able to offer a replacement. If you fail to provide a correct address during the surveys then I will be unable to replace your order.
CUSTOMS DISCLAIMER: Please be aware that some countries will charge a handling fee on items over a certain price / weight, unfortunately I have no control over this.
KICKSTARTER SURVEY DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that once surveys have been sent out you will have a limited amount of time to fill them in (up to 4 weeks). After this time a public update will be made to let you know that the books have all been shipped. Anyone who has not completed their survey by this time will not receive a copy of the book, instead their pledge will be viewed as a 'donation pledge'.
This time I have chosen to have my book printed by ‘Ex Why Zed Printing’ in Colchester, UK.
I have used them several times in the past for my art sketchbooks and prints as they have came highly recommended by many other successful Kickstarter users and friends. They are both remarkably fast and incredibly high quality.

After my last few campaigns, I learned that things don’t always go to plan so I have allowed for extra time in my deadline just in case this happens.
You will be continuously updated every two - three weeks on the progress via this campaigns updates section or you can follow the project on my social media accounts.
I've also allowed for time needed to complete all commissions and art works, so that I can give my all in creating some fantastic rewards for those backing this project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
