Torbjørn Rødland (born 1970, Stavanger, Norway) is a Los-Angeles based photographer whose portrait, still life and landscape images captivate the viewers gaze and touch their psyche with their peculiar settings, urging a slight disturbance in their calmness.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland (2019), Fondazione Prada, Milan, Italy (2018), Henie-Onstad, Oslo, Norway (2015), Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway (2014), Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, Japan (2010) and Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, United States (2010).
Art is meant to be seen, experienced, and discussed. However, when a collector acquires a work from a gallery, the first place it goes is: out of sight. While most art is transferred to private homes, many are sent straight to storage facilities where they will likely never leave.
Most collectors agree that art should remain accessible, however, they lack a way to do it. Even collectors who have dedicated private museums and exhibition spaces have limited reach to international audiences.
Together as artists, collectors, viewers, curators, historians, and everything in between, we are building Collecteurs: a digital collective museum of private collections. And we want you to join us! With your contribution we can bring these unseen works out of the dark, and back into culture, where they belong!
Collecteurs is a hybrid museum & media platform for inspiring exhibitions, in-depth reporting and genuine stories. We offer a new approach to journalism that gathers together activist-minded individuals from the art world and beyond. We cover ideas that inspire audiences and promote positive social change. By contributing to our campaign, you become a founding member. That means we will make you a part of our reporting by asking you to provide your knowledge and expertise when we decide to cover a certain subject.
Why is this important?
Collecteurs was developed at the New Museum's cultural incubator, New Inc, to address matters of urgency in today’s art world and beyond. Articles by our writers frequently tackle important issues like the corruption of curating, privatization of public institutions, and the lack of transparency in the art market. We partner with organizations like University of the Underground and with artists and thinkers like Massive Attack, Pussy Riot and Noam Chomsky to launch benefit auctions and special editorial reports on subjects like Censorship to create awareness and inspire global audiences to support pluralistic platforms and the right for free education.
As a platform, our collections database allows collectors to showcase their collections and grant curators, and art lovers like you, access to private collections for research, education and exhibition purposes. We provide emerging and established collectors the tools they need to exhibit their collections and allow them to reach global audiences, all without needing the capital to open a private museum. Collecteurs also helps artists get their works presented in context across collections and exhibitions. We started a movement where art contributes to positive social change all over the world.

Collecteurs is live with over 900 private collections on board with over 6,000 artworks uploaded. Here are just a few:
About the founders
We are Jessica and Evrim Oralkan, the founders of Collecteurs. We are passionate art collectors who recognized a key need in the art world: a digital platform for collectors to manage and showcase their collections while connecting with each other. With the evolution of our initial idea, we focused all our energy on giving the public access to unseen private collections and to make sure that the art world had a platform that was not controlled by personal interests. We self-funded Collecteurs to keep the influences away, because we believe the majority of the world’s problems are caused due to corporate greed and the maximization of shareholder profit. In 2018, we restructured Collecteurs as an independent public-benefit corporation and joined other socially-conscious brands like Kickstarter and Patagonia to ensure that the public’s benefit is always the priority for the company.
What will your contribution support?
- OUTREACH: We'll be able to grow our community and bring important private collections onto Collecteurs by creating a task force.
- RADICAL EXHIBITIONS: We'll be able to transform Collecteurs into a unique museum & media hybrid by collaborating with more academically-established and emerging curators in order to generate discussions around challenging subjects and create radical online exhibitions.
-INTEGRATE BLOCKCHAIN: We'll be able to establish blockchain technology on Collecteurs to create transparency and eliminate fakes in the art market.

We established Collecteurs as a public benefit corporation (PBC) to place our commitment to benefit the public above all else. After several years of investing in and building Collecteurs ourselves, we felt it was the right time to start a crowdfunding campaign to ask the public to support us, as our mission directly benefits them. As a PBC themselves, Kickstarter was the natural choice for us to turn to.
A BIG THANK YOU!
Thank you for reading all the way to the end. We hope that you’re just as excited about Collecteurs as we are, and that you’ll join our adventure in creating a world where people have access to the art that changes lives. We love what we’ve made, and we’re honored to share it with the Kickstarter community. For more information, check out Collecteurs or join us on social media.
Risks and challenges
We will rely on a positive press coverage of our mission to attract private collectors. We will also invest in expanding the public's positive perception of the art world. There could be collectors who may not be interested in sharing their collection with the public due to privacy concerns. In such a case, we will take the route of utilizing dedicated specialists to engage them directly by offering in-depth coverage of their collections through activations. We would also need to generate powerful narratives to convince them through major media outlets. Either way, our goal will be to create a new breed of collector; the socially-conscious collector. We are determined.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
