Do you want to see an exciting and gripping Portal webseries? Well so do we! What is Secrets of Aperture?
Last year we shot, edited and released a fan film called Portal: Survive! all on a very low budget, with the hopes of using it as a concept film for this Kickstarter.
A few months later and after some great feedback from you guys, we are now launching the Kickstarter for our Portal webseries, Secrets of Aperture, so you can play a part in making it!
Together, we can make this webseries even bigger and better! We added some stretch goals to give you more awesome Portal content.
$20,000 STRETCH GOAL REACHED!
Prepare for some sweet tie-in vlogs to enhance the story of Secrets of Aperture! These vlogs will take place between the episodes providing an in-depth look at the characters and secrets held within the mysterious Aperture Laboratories.
Next Up... $30,000 for a Cool Bonus Episode!
With more funding not only are we able to better the production quality of the entire webseries, but we'll be adding an additional episode to keep the story going. And that means additional vlogs in between as well.

Secrets of Aperture is a live-action webseries written and directed by Colin and Connor McGuire, from youtube.com/ColinandConnor. The webseries is based on the hit game Portal and will take place over five episodes. Secrets of Aperture will feature suspense, mystery, action and a bit of humor, all in an enticing and believable Portal universe. When finished, each episode will be uploaded to our YouTube channel for the whole world to enjoy!
Secrets of Aperture will be a cinematic journey through the dark legacy of Aperture Science, unfolding the events that led to its eventual demise while exposing the secrets held by both its eccentric founder and the scientists behind its most notorious scientific breakthroughs. Portal: Survive! was essentially a concept film for this webseries, which will further explore the characters and world of Portal.
This webseries will take place in a variety of locations and time periods, from the mid-1900's, to the turn of the century, and even to the distant future. Secrets of Aperture follows the story of Chell, Cave Johnson, and Doug Rattmann from the Portal Lab Rat comic, and chronicles their experiences with Aperture Science and GLaDOS.
We are approaching this webseries with a serious mindset, delivering cinematic visuals and intriguing storytelling in a professional package like in Portal: Survive! which we managed to pull off with only pocket change, so we are very excited to work with a decent budget.
Meet the team behind Secrets of Aperture. We have a wonderful cast lined up so far and its growing all the time!

Why We are Taking on this Project, and What We Hope to Accomplish
Portal has such an amazing fan base, and we believe its our responsibility as fans and filmmakers, to make high quality and entertaining Portal films. Playing Portal for the first time was really an incredible experience. It was one of the most unique, thought-provoking and terrifying games we have ever played. Portal has enormous potential as a serious film; one with an encompassing story that has heart and purpose which is always at the center of what we do. We made Portal: Survive! with that in mind and we would love the opportunity to do it again with this webseries. We truly believe in and aspire to give the online community top-quality, cinematic content with great storytelling, and Secrets of Aperture has always been one of our dream projects. We really couldn't be more excited to start production on it!
Where is My Money Going to?
That's a great question. For a production of this scale, the money will go towards many essential things. These essentials include: camera and equipment rentals, locations, custom props, set construction, costuming, and visual effects. Even the little things add up quickly, like production insurance, makeup, etc. Portal is also intricately themed, meaning many of the things you will see in the movie will have to be custom produced. All these things add up, but they make for a professional quality webseries.
Who Are We?
We are Colin and Connor McGuire, two brothers who write, direct and produce films together. Aside from Portal: Survive! we previously wrote, directed and produced Left 4 Dead - The Movie, a 3-part movie totaling over an hour long, inspired and based on Valve's zombie game Left 4 Dead. You can watch it here.
What About Copyright?
We are NOT affiliated in any way with Portal or Valve, the creators of Portal. This webseries is made completely by fans for fans, and all trademarked and copyrighted material is owned by Valve. However, Valve strongly encourages their fans to create movies and other content using their material such as stories, characters, models, music, etc. They have released several amazing tools to do so, one being Source Filmmaker. Like many others, we were inspired by Valve games and their generous view on the use of their content has allowed us to explore the worlds they create in their video games through the medium of film. We greatly respect and appreciate Valve for this and we believe it is a beautiful and unique partnership between Valve and their community of fans.
Furthermore, we are not the first to raise funds for a Portal webseries or a Valve related webseries, and to be clear, we are NOT selling the webseries in any way; it will be uploaded to the internet where anyone can watch it for free. Valve has been gracious enough to release an official policy when it comes to stuff like this so give it a read if you are unsure! Valve Video Policy
Risks and challenges
Any production of this size, especially one placed in the Portal universe comes with a plethora of risks and challenges. However, we are prepared for anything that comes our way.
Many of the problems that arise on any production have to do with inefficient pre-production which we affirm to avoid with extensive planning, scheduling, and pre-visualization. We will be thoroughly dedicated to ensuring the integrity of our vision, and that it will hold up as a quality piece of entertainment. Some of these measures include, but are not limited to, storyboards, concept art, visual effects supervisors, script readings, rehearsals, etc. We remain insistent on delivering a webseries both true to Portal and ourselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
