About this project
Hello, my name is
I am an artist working with plastic bricks and beyond. I have studied art history and had a previous career in doing street art. I have become well-known for doing brick art since I have developed a distinct style and even more managed to articulate original ideas, evaluating the artistic potential of the medium - still with a playful side and a subversive stroke.

The Enter the Brick series has become a large body of work with more than 160 different takes on the iconic 2x4 brick. Except of a few being featured individually, they have never been curated and displayed together...
Over the last year I have created a large number of new works, which are mostly unreleased yet. I have also been rephotographing the already presented works (at a much better quality), as well as creating additional staged photographies. Another project was the installation of a homepage which is the base for this and further projects. Now, after some serious considering and planning I want go full scale with the long hatched idea of creating a meta-brick in form of a book.
- Will give the highly acclaimed Enter the Brick series an adequate and curated form.
- The book is also a way to offer the people with a physical experience of the series, rather than only online.
- Beyond these reasons the book will be another brick - a unique piece of art in a book form, where the book itself becomes one of the bricks, extending the series to another level.
- Last but not least the book will also help establishing brick art in the world of art.
The book will have a documentary side displaying many pieces of the series, showing different angles and providing insights.
On the other side the presentation will follow some of the red lines which are integral to the series. Also since photography is a medium in it's own right, staged photographies will make up another part of the content. I don’t want to tell too much now as the funding will determine how much scope there will be for applying the ideas. Besides I also want you to discover them, making the book a similar experience as viewing the single bricks ;-)
To give you an idea of the content I’ll share the rough outline of the book so far.
Title: Enter the Brick - A book in the wall
Hardcover, full colour print, 80 pages or more, containing at least 80 different works of the Enter the bricks series, some unreleased yet
Preface / About the series (Guest comments)

Closing / Credits
The series has been well received, including features in books and magazines and being part of a group exhibition. Still this is a highly specialized theme among the brick community and beyond. Accordingly the book will be released in a low circulation number as an exclusive, limited and numbered (and signed) art edition. I am planning on 333 copies now (with a maximum of 400). There will be no second or re-print.
I did not aim for a publisher. The reason is that I want to have full control of the whole production process, starting from the image selection, the content, the layout, the book format to the print proofs. I have my standards and want to keep them with the book. Besides most publishers are not really interested in low circulation numbers. This aside I hope to bring this project to live by doing this as an exclusive and small scaled project due to the well received feedback upon the series. The biggest issue is marketing and distribution, so I am hoping to reach enough people who are interested in supporting this project. My network includes my homepage, my social media contacts and any other contacts who are willing to help. Any other support is more than welcome.
This was something I had to consider the most. Some cost are fixed and cannot be lowered. Also the backing pledges not only cover the book and the other rewards, but also might fund a Enter the Brick display at a large brick show in the US.
Publishing the book in a low circulation number and producing the book at a near by printing factory doesn't lower the cost. But I don't want to make compromises in terms of quality, so working close with a printer, not to mention mandatory specials such as a hard cover and more have their price.
15% of the books are for promotional use and therefore won't get covered.
For 333-400 editions, the production cost for a single book (Hardcover, 80 pages) is somewhere around 22€.
Additionally there will be shipping cost and packaging material.
There will also be fees for the platform, conversion fees for international currencies, credit card fees and taxes.
On top of this, creating the incentives for the backers also causes additional expenses, such as production and material.
This said I will need at least 10.500€ to realize the book project. Anything beyond will either make an additional show possible or give more scope for the extras in and around the book.
I would be happy to at least have the production and distribution cost covered, since I am starting from scratch. My foremost reward is spreading the idea of brick art.
Initially I was aiming for publishing the book before September 2017. Now this depends on the time I have at hand. The crowdfunding project will take time, I am starting a new job and having three kids does not give much time. Actually I am still in the progress of making photos of the Enter the Brick series.
I would love to keep September in sight, but prefer to have the option to extend the publishing date anytime if I have the feeling that meeting the first point of time would rush the book and minor the quality. Quality has the highest priority, which means the book will be published between September 2017 and latest December 2017. The postcards will be shipped in May, as well as the instructions.
If you have any requests, suggestions or something alike, just get in touch with me.
I believe in the book project and think that the Series will continue to be successful. An art book as an extended brick is the best step now, the book will definitely sell out sooner or later.
Thank you for your support and promotion.
Since I am asking for your support and financial help I have also prepared some rewards beyond the book. The rewards are art postcards, building instructions for one of the brick sculptures, and of course the book. I will offer an artist talk, furthermore include your explicit support in form of a named dedication into the book. Beyond the book there is the chance to get some unique art work. I will be creating a special series of 16 unique and united bricks and there are a very few exclusive brick commissions. There will be no other commissions regarding the Enter the Brick series beyond the support of the book project.
Instead of adding later, the worldwide shipping cost is already included in the pledges.
One of the postcards will be Cracklink, the others will be determined later.
Standard postcard size 10.5x14.8cm, they will be shipped in a letter.
The original sculpture: Open Secret
The instructions will be executed directly after the campaign. They will be sent by email. Note that there are no parts included.
The book as described above.
In the artist talk you can ask me any question, be it about the series, about art in general, we can simply talk about the community and building and stuff.
The special custom series of the 16 Bricks together will be showing a hand painted street art mural, coated with clear acrylic paint. Each brick is unique and part of a large picture at the same time. The idea behind the brick is referring to the former Berlin wall, which is made by bricks. There is a symbolic meaning: painting on walls, breaking down walls and being a document of development. Besides the idea the single bricks will be great stand-alone pieces of art.
The commissions are exclusives and will be rewarded with either fine art prints (heavy ink on museal paper for quality and durability) or the physical brick alongside a certificate of authenticity.
If the first stretch goal is being reached there will be an additional 4 different postcards of other sculptures from the Enter the Brick series added to all physical reward pledges.
In addition there is another stretch goal on top of the book project, which is directly connected to the book. A brick art tour to the US and maybe Canada, attending a convention and finally being able to visit and meet many of the befriended fellow brick companions. More details if/when the first campaign is successful.
Thank you for your support.
