About this project
Imago is a public art/sculptural installation that will make its debut at Burning Man 2016, after which it will be installed in Reno, Nevada at a new Sculpture Park.
Iridescent, turquoise mirror butterflies hover 17' over the desert, wings lifting as if just alighted, yet ready to fly. “Imago” holds a space, in structure and feeling, that is light and uplifting, like an intimate temple or futuristic shrine to Nature's creative forms.
Vibrant blue-green wings of mirrored steel scatter reflected light around us in color and pattern; stepping beneath the delicately-perforated, arching wingspan, vivid aqua light scatters, encircling us in a vaulted, luminous space of geometric reflections. The elevated butterflies are easily-resonant metaphors for the transformative experiences that compel so many migrations to Burning Man: immersion into a place of imagination, to be renewed, transformed. Butterfly metamorphosis mirrors our Playa experience specifically, and the process of artistic creation generally: intense preparations, followed by an immersion into the realm of the imagination..a dreamlike space that is safe-yet-undefined, full of potential. When the time of cocooning is over, we emerge, transformed. Just like as the newly-shaped creature butterfly, with nature's imaginative design forever etched onto its being, known as an imago, returns to the wider world, ripe for creation and pollination.
While I received a generous grant from Burning Man that cover 30% of the material costs, the artist is expected to raise the remainder through fundraising with community support, and out of their own pocket.
I've already purchased the custom-finished steel (mirror-polished and iridescent/colored on both sides) and still need to cover the costs of: frame materials, welding/fabrication costs, laser cutting, painting, lighting/wiring, transport costs. The remaining known costs come to $12,000 so I am looking to community to help lighten this significant financial investment. I'm already taking 2 months from my paid work (as is my partner) to build this art full-time for the public. We take care of all our own personal costs, we are contributing labor and time, as does the art-crew, but I would very much appreciate a helping hand to cover some of the material expenses.
Thank you for your support!
Contributions will only :
- Purchase materials/services to build Imago : laser-cutting, steel tubing, welding, hardware, lighting, wiring, acrylic.
- Occasionally rent equipment that we don’t have or can’t borrow.
- Cover the costs of transporting the sculpture and equipment.
- Rent a workspace.
Contributions do not:
- Compensate me or the art crew for personal costs, or travel to the USA nor for labor/time/effort to build Imago .
- Cover any personal expenses to attend Burning Man (i.e. tickets, food, crew transport)
Risks and challenges
As an art team, we are unique : nearly all of us live abroad and come together once a year to create art. The challenges of building large-scale art without a home base are huge. We have the energy/ inspiration to do it. We take care of all our own costs. But we're asking community to help with the material and transport costs.
To manage our art-building time in the USA, we stay with friends, borrow cars and tools. We are very much supported by our community in this way, but it does present logistical challenges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
