I’ve always loved the abstract mythology of the zodiac and I thought my watercolors would be a beautiful way to capture their celestial nature. Of course, I wanted to put my own spin on it and android girls exploring the cosmos seemed like a wonderful fit.
Sometimes I think of my paintings as illustrations to stories yet unwritten. We thought it might be a really fun experiment to invite some authors we know and love to write those stories, inspired by the paintings but with no further guidelines. Once the stories came in, we realized to our delight that what we ended up with was a sublimely cohesive shared universe. A universe where android girls pull off heists in interplanetary space fortresses, engage in philosophical musings with zen lions, rebuild their bodies to fight in illegal gladiator rings, hunt down mad copies of themselves on abandoned moons, and wage wars of curiosity.
Cody Vrosh is a self-taught illustrator and painter. He's been obsessed with robots since the day he realized that his parents probably couldn't afford an experimental android child thus forcing him to acknowledge that he was, in fact, a human boy. His books include The Irrelevant Redemption, Ash & Ember, Gas Mask A Day, /ROOT + Whim (vol 0001), and most recently, Coffee Creatures, collecting his paintings in coffee & watercolor.
Sheatiel Sarao made up her mind at very young age that she would grow up to pilot a giant robot lion. This turned out to be a much tougher career path than she anticipated (mostly owing to the lack of giant robot lions), so instead she has to content herself with writing. She is the author of two books, The Irrelevant Redemption and Ash & Ember, and has written and edited voice-over scripts for video games.
Megan E. O’Keefe has worked in both arts management and graphic design, and now makes soap for a living. It's only a little like Fight Club. She is a first place award winner in the Writers of the Future competition and her story Another Range of Mountains appears in Writers of the Future Volume 30.
Brendan Cahill is a writer, artist, and designer of comics and other things. He's worked for Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing, and is the creator of the webcomic Outside the Box. He lives in San Francisco.
Kelly Thompson is the author of the novels Storykiller and The Girl Who Would Be King. She's also a comics loving feminist troublemaker currently residing in NYC but yearning for Los Angeles.
Joseph Hewitt is hooked on the joy of immersion, whether he finds it in a book or in a game. His love for new worlds eventually led him to want to create them. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his fiancée.
Limited edition numbered art bookplate - Add $5 to your selected pledge level. We've set aside 100 bookplates (in addition to the 100 we've made available for the MechaZodiac level) so you can customize your pledge tier. The collector's edition bookplates are a Kickstarter exclusive and will be limited to a total of 200.
Add a second print - Add $15 to your selected pledge level. Your current pledge must already include at least one print (this is so we can bundle shipping).
(Note: The Zodiac sign names are just for reference and don't appear on the actual print.)
You've seen the future and you would like me to paint it! Perhaps your vision involves an android astronaut and her robotic squirrel army voyaging across the stars? Mecha dragons from the Chinese zodiac? Or maybe a steampunk countess and her gentlemanly octopus friend are calling you through time? I can paint these things for you. At the Terraformer Custom Art Level, you get an original android girl painting by me, featuring characters of your choosing. It will be painted in watercolor and detailed in ink on 11x14" watercolor paper. Below are examples of the commissions I painted for the Coffee Creatures Kickstarter campaign. For your commission, you can choose vivid white paper or the coffee tinted paper as shown below.
We're also making some of the original paintings from the book available as rewards. I created these with watercolor and ink on 16x20" watercolor paper. Each original painting comes with a copy of the book. The original art rewards currently available are Leo and Pisces (as shown above in The Art section), and Virgo (as shown below). Some of the other original paintings from the book are available but not listed, so if you're interested in a different sign, contact us and we'll create a tier if the piece is still available.
$8k – Shiny! Actually shiny. We’ll be making the book super fancy by adding Spot UV to the cover and upgrading the interior paper. Spot UV adds a glossy finish to certain elements of the design on a matte cover, it looks rad.
$9k – Sketchbookery! We’ll add 12 extra pages of sketches and process shots to the PDF. I’ll also include some step by step details for anyone who’s interested in my painting process.
$10k - The Zodiac of Teeth! Some of you may have seen the little teeth creatures I draw all the time, most notably Professor Teeth. While waiting for paint to dry (literally) as I worked on my android girl pieces, I found myself sketching my teeth creatures as zodiac animals. We’d like to give these little guys a home in their very own book. The Zodiac of Teeth will be a 24 page 5x7” softcover full color mini-book. All backers who are receiving The Android’s Astrological Companion book as part of their pledge will also get a copy of The Zodiac of Teeth automatically included.
There's nothing worse than having your precious rewards arrive damaged from poor packaging. We take extreme care to make sure your rewards get to you safely.
We had an amazing time with our last Kickstarter for my art book, Coffee Creatures, a collection of my paintings in coffee and watercolor. The end result was a gorgeous hardcover book. I truly couldn’t be more grateful and happy about the book that the Kickstarter community help me create. And with your support, we’re hoping to make The Android’s Astrological Companion as beautiful a book as possible.

Risks and challenges
The illustrations are finished and ten of the twelve stories are in. We’ll be continuing to work on the remaining stories, editing, layout, and generally making the book more awesome while the campaign is running so that it will be ready to head to the printer immediately once the campaign is over. We learned a lot from our last Kickstarter, mainly that we want to build in extra time for the proofing process as getting all the colors perfect for an art book can be tricky. The wonderful feedback we received from backers for our last successful project gave us tremendous joy and we very much wish to experience this again!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
