Thank you to all our amazing supporters for helping us reach our goal in just 8 days! We couldn't have done it without you! We are thrilled to announce our new STRETCH GOAL of $20,000! These additional funds will allow us to get this important story out to a wider audience—we can do more screenings in more cities and hopefully find a distributor so you can watch it on TV at home.

We have just added a new reward—for $20 you will receive a postcard of our film poster. We will continue to add new rewards so stay tuned…

Six Locked Doors is a new powerful documentary feature that examines the story behind the deadliest nightclub fire in American history.  The Boston Globe has called the film a "riveting documentary."

On November 28, 1942, the Cocoanut Grove nightclub was the swankiest place in Boston, Massachusetts, attracting socialites, athletes, celebrities and World War II army and navy personnel. With double the allowed occupants, locked doors, flammable materials and a host of other deadly conditions, the tragedy left 492 people dead. The film features interviews with survivors who have never before spoken on camera and showcases an extensive archive collection of photos, and unreleased vintage footage. A tragedy of enormous historical significance, the Cocoanut Grove fire set the standards for modern day fire codes, led to major changes in medicine, and resulted in the first conviction of involuntary manslaughter.

As per April 2019, we have successfully reached post production and started submitting to key film festivals. The film looks fantastic and the excitement is building up but we need your help to bring the film across the finish line.

In the next 30 days we are asking for your support to raise funds that will allow us to pursue final editing services including color correction, sound design/mix, and archival and music licensing. Once we succeed on this step, we have concrete plans to launch an outreach and distribution strategy for the film that will take Six Locked Doors to YOU and audiences across the country.

Every penny that you contribute will help bring us to the final product and start making an impact with the film. Thank you in advance!

Michele Shapiro is a Boston native and grew up hearing about the legend of Cocoanut Grove from her grandfather, Frank Shapiro, who was the lawyer for the victims of the fire. He was also at the scene that night across the street at the theater with his wife and ran over to the club and helped pull bodies from the fire. This film is her way to honor her grandfather.

Michele was the head of public relations for McLaren Automotive North America and has worked for Vanity Fair, Glamour, and Dark Horse Entertainment.

Zachary Graves-Miller is an independent documentary film director and producer releasing his first feature documentary “Six Locked Doors: The Legacy of Cocoanut Grove” in the winter of 2019. A Boston, Massachusetts native, Zach graduated from Westfield State University, studying film and literature. He co-directed his first documentary short “A Respectable Routine” about Westfield State maintenance workers, and went on to direct “Agent Orange,”which was shot in Vietnam. He has worked with award-winning filmmakers as assistant director and associate producer, including director Alan Tomlinson, John Curran on “Chappaquiddick,” and for LA Roma Films´ documentary “Boston".  While working for New York’s PBS station, THIRTEEN, as a cinematographer, Zach had the chance to document visual artist JR and the New York City Ballet Project at Lincoln Center. These projects have helped him further hone his skills in documentary filmmaking and develop a personal style.

> WGBH, Jared Bowen said, "This documentary was very well told… [it] really goes into detail….You find people who’ve never been interviewed on film before. As someone who grew up here I thought I knew so much about it but I realized I knew absolutely nothing."

Risks and challenges

The film has been completed. We are now putting on the finishing touches: making final edits, color correction, sound design/mix, and archival and music licensing. We have already been accepted into a few film festivals and are working toward more. We are currently working on a distribution strategy. We are hoping to get this incredible story out to a wide audience but as with all media there is a risk that it may not sell. If this happens we do have the option to release it digitally.
