For many people, the day that they discovered Japanese animation (or “anime”) is an important one. Maybe anime directly impacted your life: you rushed home from school to watch the latest episode of Dragon Ball Z. Maybe you got into Toradora or Re:Zero just recently. Maybe the impact was indirect: you watched Stranger Things, which was influenced by Elfen Lied.
Our project is dedicated to those moments of impact, those moments that stirred up your emotions and showed you just what entertainment could do. It is our goal to create entertainment that is based on amazing stories. The world is filled with talented writers and artists, and we want to give them a chance at sharing their gifts with the world.
When Kristján Gunnarsson of Iceland heard that we were searching for amazing stories to bring to life, he submitted his story for review. Among hundreds of submissions, his story The Inevitable Paradise was selected for production. With Kristjan’s input and your help, we are moving ahead with this project now.
Paradise is a parable about the relationship between man and his creations and the way that those relationships evolve. We see two people struggling to get by, their worlds crumbling around them. Marcus, who is realizing after years in a VR that he needs another person to be happy, decides that he is willing to go to the ends of the earth to find love. Tölva is an AI whose programming tells her to keep Marcus happy. What Tölva sees as happiness, however, is really just entertainment. After the love of his life leaves the safety of VR, Marcus and Tölva are then forced into a dangerous and chaotic world to search for her.
Marcus is the man who didn’t know how great he had it until he lost everything. Living his life in a VR without hardship, how will he find the woman he loves most in a world where the weak are eaten?
Joanna is the only thing Marcus truly cared about. She wants nothing more than to experience a real family with Marcus. Passionate and down-to-earth, she desires something real in an overwhelmingly virtual world.
Tölva is Marcus’ caretaker AI. Her only function is to bring Marcus happiness and comfort. She will go to any lengths necessary for her master.
Our process is very similar to most animation processes, but ours is guided on a different set of principles. There are currently tons of artists, writers, and other talented individuals who are being taken advantage of. Regardless of how well an animation does profit-wise, the talented people that made the magic still get the same amount of money, an often-miniscule amount compared to what real profits are. With your help, we can work to change this corrupt system. In order to fix this problem, we use a percentage base payment system, in which each individual is paid a set percentage of all revenue. Today, the passion is lost: many stories have become weak. The focus has shifted away from bringing the audience enjoyment to bringing in the next big profit. We want to go back to the time when we were excited to get home not because we were done with school or work but because the latest episode of our favorite series was being aired. We focus on each step of the animation process like our life depends on it, combing through hundreds of stories and artists until we find the one.
Risks and challenges
Our business model is unique among animation projects. We rely on Kickstarter funds to move into the production phase and give each staff member a percentage of those funds. Once we have reached our goal, we can immediately move onto the next stage of production and create this wonderful story.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
