As a prolific artist-run project space, Co-Lab has always had a strong focus on documentation. This year, Co-Lab set out to make documentaries for every exhibition/performance the space presented. During each show, the artist(s) is interviewed and the installation/performance is filmed. The footage is then edited together to exemplify the artist’s thoughts and processes (see our vimeo link). At the year’s end, these videos will be made into a DVD set to accompany a catalog/guide that also functions as a stand-alone document. On December 10th, 2011 Co-Lab will host a release event and screening where DVD/Catalog sets will be available for pick up and purchase. Each featured artist will receive free copies, and the remaining catalogs will be sold in bookstores and distributed to curators and institutions throughout Texas and beyond, extending the scope and reach of the artist’s original creation.

The kind of documentation that Co-Lab creates is invaluable to the artists it represents and is crucial in establishing a dialogue between the local community and the global art community. In addition to these connections, the catalog project will also provide a history of an experimental space.

Perhaps most importantly, this project will continue to support and encourage artists by providing them with a space to share their work with the community and providing professional documentation for artists who do not have the resources to create a record of their works.

In addition to producing the DVD/Catalog Co-Lab is also in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and working on a multitude of projects in an effort to revitalize the building and property Co-Lab operates from. These projects will require funds beyond the $4000 we are raising for the DVD/Catalog. Any additional funds raised beyond the $4000 mark will be exclusively used for these organizational improvements.

About Dada Dinners:

Co-Lab Dada Dinners are set to premier seasonally in 2012. This series of dinners find themselves at the intersection of food and art. A concept proposed by Luanne Stovall the series emulates the Dadaist dinners. Each course of the meal is accompanied with an artistic element such as a dance or musical performance or a revealing of paintings, sculptures, projections, etc. These dinners also function as a means of fundraising in which Co-Lab will partner with other organizations and venues and recruit a cast of artists, performers, gardeners, and chefs to concoct a meal to remember.

*The Co-Lab garden will serve as a resource from which a portion of the food will be grown and harvested, other ingredients will be obtained locally and organically.
