Since its first edition back in 1977, Chivalry & Sorcery's guiding principle has always been that no one is an island. Every character you play will have been shaped by the society around them - even your landless adventurer or free-booting wanderer had a home and family once!
Chivalry & Sorcery character generation therefore gives you the tools to create well-rounded characters who really feel like they belong to their world. Knights wield secular power and command the battlefield, while other warriors strive to win their spurs in combat and rise to join their ranks. Magick is deep and mysterious, drawing on real-world historical detail, and encompasses many forms, from divination magic to illusions, from harnessing the elemental powers of Air, Earth, Fire and Water, to enchanting wondrous items and artifacts of great power. Priests utter prayers and call upon the very miracles of their gods!
Previous editions of Chivalry & Sorcery focused on Christianity as the core religion of the medieval setting. In this new edition, we're expanding the rules to incorporate Judaism and Islam as possible faiths for your characters. At the same time, the rules for priests and miracles are structured for you to tailor them to any religion, whether real-world or fictional, to best fit your campaign.
In Chivalry & Sorcery, you decide the level of magic and fantasy for your game. Run a medieval high fantasy game filled with magic, miracles and myth, archmages, elementalists, and dragonfire - or one of gritty, low fantasy, or even pure historical simulation. The choice is yours!
From fairy-tale romance to courtly love, from religious intrigue to brutal, bloody battle, Chivalry & Sorcery lets you play in just the Middle Ages you want. It caters for the full gamut of your medieval fantasy needs, from knightly vigils and holy quests, dynasties and domain management, right through to gaggles of bad-ass goblins and terrifying dragons.
Back in the day, Chivalry & Sorcery often had a reputation as a complex game. A lot of that was down to the presentation of the core book with pages of dense, tiny print. Today, we'd say that C&S is a detailed game, but not a complicated one. It provides you with all the rules you could want (or need) for running a deep game of medieval adventure with a strongly realistic feel. But the rules themselves, centred on the Skillscape system, are clean and consistent, and adaptable to all the situations you'll experience in play.

A role-player for four decades, Steve served his scribe's apprenticeship writing scenarios for RPGA tournaments in the 1990's, including the Ravenloft Open two years running at UK Gencon. Forming Brittannia Game Designs Ltd in 1997, he has gone on to create the "Dragon Reaches of Marakush" campaign setting for Chivalry & Sorcery, and has made contributions to all BGD products, including the adventures "Where Heroes Fear to Tread" and "Treachery".
is a professional portrait painter based in Vancouver, Canada. He has been a player of Chivalry & Sorcery since 1979, having been introduced to the game at school. He has always been interested in medieval history, writing his art college dissertation on medieval miniature painting. He has previously undertaken work for Games Workshop, Chaosium Inc, and Brittannia Game Designs.
is a communications consultant and former journalist based in the Middle East. He's a founder member of the Gulf Role-Playing Community, and has been a fan of Chivalry & Sorcery since discovering the 2nd edition around 1984. Ed Simbalist's article on manorial economics led him to run research projects on medieval villages, agriculture and landscapes. He has previously done design work for Columbia Games Inc and Brittannia Game Designs.
...has no idea why he is in this book. This is just one of the many topics that baffle him, despite the many contributions he has made: the creative force behind the Chivalry & Sorcery Essence RPG, Rocket Jocks, and the scenario "Under the Castle Gates", and his lengthy experience of gaming and play-testing.
...comes from an area rich with history, whose language is closest to that of Chaucer. He combines a love of role-playing and history with testing systems to destruction!
