Minimalist, Sustainable, USA-Made Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, August 15 2019 6:59 AM UTC +00:00.
The Cnoc trekking poles are ultralight carbon fiber poles that are repairable on the go, made in the USA, and designed to be the last poles you will ever need to buy.
Now back to the poles:
Trekking poles are not a new idea, but we wanted to make the ultimate pole: light, simple, refined, robust and most of all: repairable on the go. Your current trekking poles are unnecessarily complex. With the Cnoc trekking poles, we went back to basics: fewer parts and better materials.
Every part of our poles has been individually engineered and improved to make it more efficient, more user-friendly, and simple enough to take apart and put back together even when you’re out on the trail:
We’ve partnered with factories around the country that bring years of knowledge and experience to the table in their respective fields, all eager to help us make superb trekking poles. We are proud to be able to draw from their innovation and provide new solutions to old problems.
One of the most underrated yet vital characteristics of trekking poles is that in the case of a fall or other gravity-related conundrum, they are the tool that will keep you uninjured. Even in these situations, you never want your poles to break - but better the poles than you.
The Cnoc trekking poles have been designed so that you can take apart the entire pole and replace only the parts you need. You don’t need to throw away the whole pole, and you don’t need to go out and buy a whole new pair.
Of course, the best situation is that even in an emergency, your trekking poles hold strong. We have addressed known weak points to make the strongest, most resilient poles possible. With parts that are replaceable, just in case.
To reduce our impact on the environment, the Cnoc Poles are:
Our goal is for these to be the last hiking poles you’ll ever need to buy.
These new poles have replaceable parts, making your new poles usable for life. We will send any part to you at home or on the trail, helping you save money and waste less.
When looking for partners to produce our new trekking poles with, we wanted to source expertise and innovation from people and companies with whom we could develop strong and long-lasting relationships. For this level of partnership, we needed to stay in the USA. Not only will this allow for constant dialogue leading to more and better improvements, but it will also create jobs around the country as we grow.
Since 2016 there has been no large-scale domestic manufacturing of trekking poles, so we had to reinvent the wheel. After countless hours of research, networking and in-depth conversations, we found a strong group of manufacturers that we feel confident will help us produce the best poles you’ll ever use.
Seeking specialized, agile and out of the box companies allowed us to find true partners in making the new Cnoc trekking poles. Our partners are small companies, like us, that seek to create, innovate and lead the market with exciting new products. By supporting this campaign, you are supporting real factories, with real people, that will see big growth opportunities in their area.
Four of our factories are in the Pacific Northwest (like us), allowing us to shorten our supply chain and offer a more sustainable trekking pole. It’s just like getting vegetables from your local farmer.
We’re making three types of extremely light carbon fiber poles to fit your needs, whether you’re a thru-hiker, trail runner, alpinist, or simply in need of some support while walking.
Trekking poles make hiking more comfortable and more accessible.
Z-POLES are for fast and light adventures or for highly space-conscious explorers; they don’t weigh much and are very compact, but the price is reduced durability.
Our TELESCOPIC POLES are a little longer, but are also the most durable, robust and ready for some abuse. These poles are perfect for thru-hiking, long backpacking trips and for anyone who needs some extra security when they move.
If you want simplicity and the ability to stabilize your shelter with the least weight punishment, one of our two-segment ULTRALIGHT (UL) POLES will do the trick: perfect for setting up shelters, wading through rivers or bush-whacking.
All poles have a carbide tungsten tip but also come with a rubber tip for road use or being gentle on trails, a mud basket for those off trail days, and a snow basket. Wrist straps are easily removable, so if you hate them, you can get rid of them.
For those requiring a fast and light pair of poles that can be quickly and easily stowed away anywhere, even in your daypack. At 14.5 inches collapsed size, the Cnoc Z-poles are truly easy to carry, while it can still be used from 105cm to 130cm, allowing you to tackle any kind of terrain.
Easy to open and collapse using a simple button fitted in an aluminum tube and holding tension using a stainless-steel wire.
To make the Cnoc Z-poles even more robust, they are made from 4 sections of 100% carbon fiber tubes and a middle section of flight grade aluminum 7075; this supports the button, which is usually the biggest weakness in Z style poles.
To make the Cnoc Z-poles even better, they are field repairable without any tools; you can service your poles anywhere.
Robust yet light trekking poles that use a minimalist design useful for any adventure. Comfortably collapse the three carbon fiber tubes using the FQL or use at any length between 71cm and 158cm.
Extra long, ergonomic grip in natural compressed cork or EVA foam makes for an easy hold along with the left or right adjustable straps.
The ultimate trekking poles for long travel, heavy loads and/or harsh conditions.
Ultralight (UL) trekking poles designed for the UL hiker who wants to get the most out of a pole even without using them as a hiking aid. Perfect for shelter setup, river wading, bushwhacking or to give an extra hand in hard conditions. Extra long shafts and a simple, short handle grip make the UL Cnoc poles a truly utilitarian tool.
Goodwinds Composites has humble beginnings as a retail carbon and fiberglass rod and tube supplier but now manufactures everything from composite airplane parts to guitar truss rods. Their company motto is "excellence" - they strive for excellent products, excellent relationships, and an excellent working environment. We're proud to be working with a company that values their employees and is producing carbon fiber components with remarkable quality.
Rex Plastics is a second-generation, family-owned and operated plastic injection molding contract manufacturer founded in 1971. Whenever possible, Rex uses domestically manufactured plastics. In the early days, their first product was an emergency vehicle antenna base. Rex Plastics have been focusing on small batch, experimental parts, happy to test, test again and yet again to get parts just right. Working in small batches allows Rex Plastics to make more part and adjust material easily, it also means that they can offer their services to smaller companies that can’t afford making thousands (and sometimes tens of thousands) of units in each production round.
Founded in 1980, The Federal Group USA (TFG USA) have been providing metal works and engineering services to every possible industry except the outdoors. Focusing mainly on high volume auto industry, they use any of their factories in the US or Asia to fabricate parts from any metal in any form. This extensive experience with metal, allowed them to really help us in finding the best materials for our poles. Borrowing from engine valves (our Easy Tip), their in house engineers had the knowledge and experience to dissect a part and think about how it works, which forces applied to it and how no make it lighter but keep it strong enough to work in the field.
Our cables and grippers for our Z-poles come from commercial picture hanging fixtures, allowing them to be adjustable and repairable. John makes the components in his workshop and, as an avid hiker, loves the idea of taking part in making better trekking poles.
Portland Packaging Company is a Portland institution, serving the PNW since 1952 for packaging and shipping supplies. Working with several mills in the Oregon and Washington area, they offer a wide range for recycled and recyclable paper solutions.
We have been working with PPC since we started shipping our Vecto after our previous Kickstarter campaign; and happy to be able to work with them now on designing and making packaging for our new poles.
. . .
The only parts that aren’t made in the United States are the tips and the grips.
Despite hours (and days, and weeks, and months…) of searching, we haven’t been able to find a US source for the carbide tips that go over our in-house-made (in Portland, OR) Easy tips. We’ll keep looking, but for now these are going to be made in China.
Handles are the other challenge. Cork isn’t grown in the US, and so there is no cork industry here. While we are enthusiastic about creating jobs, we’re a little too small to establish a whole new industry. EVA cannot be made in the US due to federal regulation. We will jump into action as soon as any of these changes and there are US companies we can work with! Handles will be made in China, sourced from a Taiwanese company, until that day.
About Cnoc Outdoors
Back in the spring of 2016, Gilad Nachmani was hiking in the Scottish Highlands where he broke his expensive trekking poles from a company that shall not be named near Cnoc na-Gareig (hence the name of our company). Frustrated with the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on a new pair, he set off to prove you can make trekking poles cheaper and more repairable.
Cnoc Outdoors is a small team of four hikers in Portland, Oregon, creating the amazing gear that we've always wanted—but no one makes—with minimalist design, fair manufacturing, and reduced impact on the earth. We like to say, "We make gear lists come true."
We promote efforts to protect the wild beauty of the world and create inclusive, accessible outdoor adventures, in part by supporting trail maintenance in collaboration with 1% for the Planet. What's the point of an outdoor gear company, if we don't take care of the places we want to go?
We’re a lean company who does not accept money from big investors. We’ll use these Kickstarter funds to pay for tooling and machinery and meet required minimum orders from our factories. Plus, Kickstarter provides a unique way for us to meet you and get your feedback.
Thank you to our collaborators!

Risks and challenges
We aim to ship your new made in the USA carbon fiber poles to you by November. But since we are having our factories ship all the parts to us and them assembling the poles in the warehouse, there is a chance that there will be delays at the factories, during shipping, or assembly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
