Valar Dohaeris, bannermen!

This is the beginning of the second week of the campaign of A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game. We've unlocked a lot of additional content and there is still a lot more to come. In fact, in this update, we will unveil a bit more of what's to come! We're very close to hitting our next Stretch Goal, which will see Ramsay Snow unlocked for all backers at $770k:

What's Next

We have received a lot of great feedback from you, our backers, on the first week. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas! We're taking note and as always, we're making tweaks to offer a great deal, and a great game that you will be able to enjoy for years to come. Although Characters in the form of Commanders, NCUs and Attachments add a lot of tactical play as well as wide variety of army building, it's Units you've been asking for more of, and our next Stretch Goals bring some surprises on that front:

If we reach $800k, all backers will get 4 Stark Longbowmen miniatures in 2 sculpts along with the Stark Longbowmen Unit Card - we'll be adding the next parts of this unit box in future stretch goals so all backers will be able to complete this unit.

If we reach $830k, all backers will get 2 cavalry miniatures from the Knights of Casterly Rock along with its Unit Card - we'll be adding the next parts of this unit box in future stretch goals as well so all backers will be able to complete this unit.

Don't worry for a second that we might not fully unlock these two units for free to all backers, in time. We want you guys to have this, and we always pay our debts.

Gameplay!

While you'll be getting a full article on these units soon, we'd like to give you a hint of what to expect from these.

STARK LONGBOWMEN

3D Render of the unit of Stark Longbowmen
3D Render of the unit of Stark Longbowmen

The Longbowmen for House Stark bring both a ranged element as well as a panic-inducing element to the Dire Wolf army. Nothing can quite cause the wavering of troop's morale compared to a hail of arrows that blocks out the sun! Ok, that might be a bit extreme, but if you do indeed cause enough casualties with the Longbowmen then they can cause their target to Panic. Banding two of these units together can lead to even more devastating effects!

KNIGHTS OF CASTERLY ROCK

3D Render of the unit of Knights of Casterly Rock
3D Render of the unit of Knights of Casterly Rock

Elite and outfitted with the best gear Lannister wealth can buy, the Knights of Casterly Rock are a true terror on the battlefield. Cavalry charges were some of the most feared events in warfare, and here is no exception. While not built for prolonged engagements, Lances can devastate an enemy on the charge, and with a 3+ Defense and Resilience of 2 the Knights won't go down easily. Better still, if you control the Crown zone of the Tactics Board, enemies cower in sight of such force, making the knights all the harder to actually take down!

New Optional Buys!

And to continue to broaden our selection of Optional Buys for you, we have 2 brand new options that we'd like to offer:

The Northern Ruins Terrain Set is a Kickstarter Exclusive set of plastic pieces to enrich your ASOIF:TMG experience.

Note that this is an Exclusive item for Kickstarter backers, with remaining stock available at conventions and special promotions only.

The contents of the Northern Ruins Terrain Set are:

  • 1 Bog
  • 1 Low Wall
  • 2 Ruined Walls
3D Preview render of the Northern Ruins Terrain Set

Bogs are notoriously hard to transverse! They typically possess the Hindering keyword, which is going to make charging through them quite the risk! For added effect, you can add the Dangerous keyword, since who knows what lies beneath!

Meanwhile the humble Low Wall is not to be discounted either. These structures typically have the Cover and Fortified keywords, meaning they will provide additional advantages to Defense for against both Ranged and Melee attacks.

When playing with the Ruined Walls you can treat them as normal, or add in the Destructible keyword, making their usage limited before they are completely removed from the battlefield!

Preview of the 'Battle in the Whispering Wood' playmat
Preview of the 'Battle in the Whispering Wood' playmat

The 'Battle in the Whispering Wood' playmat is an item exclusive to Kickstarter and Organized Play, with remaining stock available at conventions and special promotions only.

The 'Battle in the Whispering Wood' Playmat comes in two 2 x 4 feet neoprene pieces, 2mm thick, so it can be more easily stored and transported. The two pieces come together to form a single 4 by 4 feet area to enrich your ASOIF:TMG experience and features the landscape of the battle where Robb Stark lured Jaime Lannister out of his camp and dealt him a crushing defeat!

“How could it happen? Ser Jaime taken, the siege broken ... this is a catastrophe!”
“How could it happen? Ser Jaime taken, the siege broken ... this is a catastrophe!”

For those that want that extra layer of immersion we offer the Battle of Whispering Woods playmat, which recreates the famous encounter between the Starks and Lannisters often seen as one of, if not the iconic battle of the War of the Five Kings.

Combined with either the 2D terrain available in the Starter Box, or the 3D terrain offered with the optional buys, and you too can recreate this major event, but perhaps this time it may play out differently: What if Robb and Jaime had met in single combat? How would the Lannister army have fared against a full Outrider Host? Would the appearance of Ser Gregor Clegane impact the resulting battle? It's up to you to find out!

If you're interested in purchasing these optional buys, please just click the "Manage Your Pledge" button on the A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game Kickstarter page and in the pledge manager add the desired amount of funds. We'll sort out what your extra money is going towards after the campaign has closed and we've sent out our Pledge Manager.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.

+1 modular. I'm actually now more interested in the terrain than the game, and Reaper's KS starts tomorrow, so I'll probably drop out and hope you will have a terrain KS!

Loving the 'modular' style mats - any chance an optional third (of a design that integrated with the other two) could be added to make it a 6'x4' for larger games?

Absolutely loving those Lannister heavy cavalry, hope we get mounted characters as unit upgrades soon

This is awesome. I am looking forward to some southron knight action!

    7. Sybaris of the Abyssal Woods on

Further detail: the miniatures are using recurve bows.

    8. Sybaris of the Abyssal Woods on

Please call them Stark Bowmen, rather than Longbowmen, because the bow they carry is too short to be a longbow.

I'm not a big fan of cutting the battlemat in half. These types of mats are already portable and storable enough with how you can roll them up without needing cut it into 2 pieces. And by having the seam in the middle of the board it leaves the center of the battlefield to get frayed edges from use. Would much rather it was just a full 4x4 and with a stitched edge around for added durability like how they are finishing the Rising Sun mat. I think as is I'd just buy a mat that is 4x4 from a 3rd party instead of adding this.

    10. David Eugene Durrett Jr. on

The way Rain of Arrows on the Stark Longbowmen reads, it would apply to their Short Sword attacks as well. Intended?

    11. Zhiyuan Fu on

      @Mr. John,

It has been confirmed that the cardboard terrain and any 3D terrain offered as addon will be compatible in size and also that the 3D terrain will be competition compliant. Meaning that the 3D addon terrain can be used in official competitions in local stores etc.

    12. Zhiyuan Fu on

@Phil all stretch goals unlock are per base set pledges, meaning if you back for 3 core sets you get 3 sets of stretch goals freebies.

    13. Phil on

Should we unlock both units above, would we receive a unit per pledge? Or per backer?

    14. Patrick Scherr on

Great update, but +1 for Ratimir, this is not a big resculpt, please do it!
      Best from Germany :)

+1 Ratimir. The Bolton Packmaster bows look much more appropriate for longbows. It also looks like the quivers are slung at the waist in the art but missing from the models.

    16. Mr. John on

Can someone confirm, that the plastic terrain and the cardboard terrain will have the same dimensions? In other words, when my Stark Bannermen charge onto a wall, can I put the cardboard cutout of the wall in the exact place the 3D terrain was in?

    17. Johannes Behling on

I was hoping for Lannister cavalry since the beginning! Awesome!

    18. Jonny Westaway on

+1 Ratimir, agreed about the shape of those bows!

Those bows are far too recurved for longbows.

    20. DaveC on

Are the archers missing their quiver/arrows? or is it just the angle of the image?

    21. David Smith on

Well we know what the next $90k stretch goals to be. Bad move on having high terrain printed on the mat (trees) as this looks so wrong when using 3d miniatures and severely limits its use as you always have woods in those locations. Love the renders.

    22. Peter Lowe on

Will there be a middle insert (new add-on) for the map to make it 6' by 4' for 50 point battles?

    23. Burkhard on

      Now we are talking!

    24. Peter Lowe on

Great update, hopefully the only way is up from here on out

That's too bad that there are trees on the playmat. I understand though that it is supposed to be a specific fight area. Some people will like this design and some people won't. There's no way to appeal to both.
