HEY WOW! Thanks to a GENRE-ous backer (get it?) who has decided to back a nice little sum without buying the game, we have added a new LIMITED QUANTITY $30 level which has FREE SHIPPING. If you upgrade from one deck to two or are a new backer at that level - you can get an extra deck (playable with 2-6 players) and the game ships for free! You guys did this!

GENRE is a tabletop card and RPG-style dice game of crazy cross-genre adventures where you create characters and team up to take on procedurally-generated challenges and nemeses.

It's a tongue-in-cheek love letter to genre fiction in all its forms, from TV shows, to books, to movies, to games. On top of being an intense, well-balanced strategy game, there are a ton of opportunities for interactive and emergent storytelling (if you're into that sort of thing), which you can treat as seriously or hilariously as you please. For a quick summary of how it works, check out the video below.

We've created over 100 unique genre cards, each inspired by a different category of genre fiction, such as Fantasy, Hard Sci-Fi, Zombie, Superhero, Western, and so forth. Each genre card comes with its own dice mechanics, special abilities, and player motivations, all invoking the spirit of that genre. You might see such zany mash-ups as "Lovecraftian Medical School Days," "Kung Fu Romance Survival," or "Post-Apocalyptic Sports Tragedy." No two games are the same. Here's that sample round from the intro video in full:

Want to learn even more about the game? Doc & Krueger speak in-depth about GENRE in the latest episode of their podcast, "Backward Compatible."

Our master plan you say? That depends. If we meet some of our stretch goals, we'll be able to produce all 102 cards we've already designed, and then some. The result would be three 30-card sets, each with a particular theme; these can each stand alone or be combined with one another for greater variety in cross-genre play. The remaining 12 cards may be unlocked as bonus, Kickstarter-exclusive rewards that we'll include with your copy of the game. But, for now, let's talk about our initial goals.

To keep our costs down, our $8,000 starting goal will be used to produce our first set of 30 cards, which allows for complete games with up to four players. At this funding level, we'd make that set available in a tuck box, the simplest and least expensive packaging we have access to. Please note that, at least for now, GENRE requires that you bring your own dice and counters (or some handy apps).

The first set, which we're calling GENRE: POP, is our personal favorite, as it includes many of the genres popular in film, TV, and among geeks like ourselves:

If we exceed our initial funding goal, we have plenty of awesome upgrades in mind that will get us to our complete vision for the game and beyond.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of what that all means:

$10,000

  • Anyone who receives a copy of the game will automatically receive a box upgrade to one big enough to store the cards from all three core sets. It also comes with a bigger, easier-to-read rules booklet.
  • We'll create printable scenarios and extras for the game and put them up for free on our Web site.

$20,000

  • Unlock the GENRE: LIFE 30-card set, a cool "reality-driven" theme:
  • Any backers who have ordered two or more 30-card sets (at least two sets are required for five- and six-player games) may now choose GENRE: LIFE as part of their order.
  • We will create scenarios on our Web site which include GENRE: LIFE.

$27,000

  • Unlock the GENRE: DARK 30-card set, a brooding, "mature" (TV14) set full of everyone's favorite monsters and perils:
  • Any backers who have ordered two or more 30-card sets (at least two sets are required for five- and six-player games) may now choose GENRE: DARK as part of their order.
  • We will create scenarios on our Web site which include GENRE: DARK.

$30,000

  • Everyone who will be receiving a copy of the game also gets a FREE, Kickstarter-exclusive 12-card set with the following bonus genres that really twist the game around:
  • A new $150 backer reward is unlocked: the KICKSTARTER EDITION box set, hand-signed by Doc & Krueger.
  •  A new $55 backer reward is unlocked: the exclusive KICKSTARTER EDITION box set, which ships with all 102 genre cards in one large box, all the dice required to play the game, and enough XP counters to run two six-player games concurrently.

$60,000

  • Our original art budget is doubled and we can consider additional free bonuses for backers! We'll post more details as this starts to look like a real possibility.

$85,000

  • Our original art budget is tripled and upgrades will abound! We'll post more details as this starts to look like a real possibility.

$100,000

  • All our hopes and dreams are funded for the core sets. Doc's cat is fat and happy, and we can start working on core set #4 and other expansions, plus backers will get some seriously great mystery upgrades that won't appear in the retail version of the game! We'll post more details as this starts to look like a real possibility.

Most of our design work is done. We're now in the final testing and tweaking phases, and with print-on-demand sites (the way we currently plan to distribute the game), or even print-and-play distribution, we could technically make the game available now. The problem is, we wouldn't have any art, and we want to make sure we deliver a high-quality product which appeals to the wide audience we want to share this game with. So, essentially, we're here on Kickstarter so we can pay some artists, and pay them in advance. After all, artists need to eat, too!

(Psst! Hungry artists, come talk to us!)

Technically, there's a bit more to it than that, but art is definitely a big part of it. To ensure that we can get a copy of the game to everyone who wants to get one as their backer reward, we calculated what our break-even point would be and used that as the basis for our initial funding goal. The percentage breakdown is:

  • Business/legal expenses: 8%
  • Art commissions: 24%
  • Production costs: 66%
  • Profit: 2%
Now, you may be asking, if we're doing print-on-demand publication, why is production cost such a big percentage? Even though there's no "up-front" production cost with print-on-demand publication--assuming we ignore the man-hours that went into designing the game--we're effectively taking orders now in the form of backer rewards, meaning we need to account for the cost to print each copy, which is usually paid by the end-user (you) as part of the retail cost. When you back us at a high enough level to get a copy, we want to make sure we get it to you without going into the red after we first pay our artists and cover other expenses.

That's about it! Use the comments section here on KICKSTARTER to communicate with us for general questions about the game or the campaign so that we can begin generating the FAQ, and if you have a specific question about your order, or want to read the complete rules, you can go to our website: docandkrueger.com/GENRE, twitter: twitter.com/docandkrueger or on Facebook at facebook.com/docandkrueger

Thanks! -D&K

Risks and challenges

1) ARTISTS: As with any analog game, there is the potential for production delays, especially with a project that will require 30-102 pieces of unique art from 3-10 artists. This will require a phased approach with waves of cards and art, should there be a need to hire fewer artists with a longer deadline as opposed to the planned three artists per deck. The plan is to have a backup artist who will also be able to cover the loss of one artist, should that occur. Fortunately, we have an extensive network of artists to hire from, including Doc's former students and colleagues in the art world. By having concurrent and redundant artists working in tandem, we hope to avoid card art delays as much as possible. This has, however, all been built into the target delivery date.

2) OVER-FUNDING: If the campaign is wildly successful in monumental, record-breaking ways, (one can always dream, no?), then we will release the game in three or more waves in cooperation with the distributor based on their capacity and ability to warehouse/ship. This will be done as closely as possible to the order in which individual backers supported the project (first-come, first-served, in other words). So, for example, the first $500k in sales might ship a few weeks or months prior to the next $500k in sales, and so forth. Alternatively, we will also likely seek multiple outlets of distribution should this occur.

3) POD: The plan to use print-on-demand distribution allows us to collect all payment up front, then use bulk printing rates to lower the overall cost of distribution to our backers. Further, this will speed up delivery because our distribution company will not send the items to us, but rather to the backer directly. This model has the potential to be less time-efficient than "traditional" print runs in extremely large volumes, however, and if all the stretch goals are completed and we are over-funded as described above, we will quickly endeavor to take bids from a traditional printer to better get the game out to our backers on time.
