I am Christopher Magick the founder of Linou. I have been working in the fashion, design and tech start-up industry for over 15 years. The purpose of this project is to get the first range of Wood Wearable tech pieces into production for the new brand Linou. I want Linou to represent an idea that the development of technology must be in harmony with nature. Linou believes for a watch to be smart, it must save you time. We focused on this functionality and built a system to act as a filter for only important notifications. One of the challenges we have overcome was to merge this functionality with beautiful and sustainable design.
For me my phone is always with me, so having duplicate functions on a watch is just not necessary and often results in the wearable part of the tech not being present in the design.
I love watches and I wanted to wear something that would notify me of the incoming alerts on my phone but at the same time work as a classic time piece that I want to wear. This is where I came up with the idea of the coloured and vibration alerts built into the clasp of the band. It lets you know who is calling, what APP I am getting a notification from or whatever reminder I have set up on my phone, in a more subtle way.
My father runs and owns a timber company and from a young age I had a fascination working with different types of natural materials. The use of Timber brings a unique and individual element to the pieces.
Early in 2013 I began working with the plan for the idea I had for Linou, initially thinking it would take me three months. That turned into twelve as the development and engineering process took much longer than anticipated as did every other stage of launching my own wearable tech start-up.
Using my experience in design, engineering and development I was able to produce the pieces I am showing today. I went through multiple iterations with multiple parts of the project to reach the balance between the functionality and the aesthetic of the design.
The PCB was developed with a team in China. It took four months with 6 people working on various parts of the project. I developed the alert system and in co-op with another team I sourced and developed the APP.
At the same time I was working on the way to integrate the alert system into wearable fashion that was actually beautiful and well designed.
The result of the time and all the hard work is the Wood wearable tech watch and the Notification Necklace.
The settings for the watch and necklace can be customised using the Linou APP which will be available on both iOS and GooglePlay. Both devices connect to your phone using the latest Bluetooth chip. The Chip, vibration, rgb light and custom engineered PCB are powered by a lithium ion battery.
The tech on the watch has been inlaid into a beautiful design using stainless steel and ebony timber. The watch face covered by sapphire glass features the Linou emblem at the 12,3,6 & 9 indicators, the movements are Swiss. The necklace is crafted from Walnut and is also available in Bamboo and Sandalwood.
These are the first pieces put together by Linou, a brand focused on pioneering technology in balance with nature.
My one wish, prayer, meditation, and hope for this project is that it will encourage you to stop for even just a single moment to remember nature. I want us to realize how much the things we wear and the things we make cost the earth her precious resources.
It is with this mission in mind that I founded Linou, a company committed to creating sustainable products that bring our awareness back to nature and encourage its growth for the future. After a year of development, I am so humbled to share the first line of products with you here on Kickstarter and I hope that you will join me in growing the future and inspiring future generations to come.
POST CAMPAIGN LOGISTICS The first stage after the campaign is to finish the molds for the new clasp system, which is estimated to take two weeks. I am hoping to generate ideas and a discussion during this campaign about a variety of aspects of the design and am hoping that it will become something truly incredible from people coming together to make this happen. All other parts of the project are at production sample stage. The clasp will require a production sample to confirm which will take 2-3 weeks. During this time I will begin the final stages of rolling the Linou APP out over android and ios platforms. The time to production after the conclusion of the project will be approximately three weeks. Production is estimated to take two weeks for the first batch to be ready. Estimated delivery time is 1-2 weeks depending on your location. We hope to deliver our first shipment to our early bird backers late November.
If the campaign is successful I will grow the company based on balancing development with respect to nature. I feel privileged for the opportunities I have had in Australia and would love to create a business that shows that gratitude. I would like Linou to work as a new model for doing conscious business, by not only focusing on profit but on sustainable development of cutting edge tech that is both wearable, reliable, well crafted and beautifully designed.
Risks and challenges
I lived in China for twelve months to eliminate as many of the production risks and development challenges as possible. I gained a huge amount of knowledge whilst there and return regularly. It's possible there are things I have overlooked, but if we reach these, we will be honest and transparent with our customers.
I am a little old school so I will also be focusing on making sure that Linou as a company and brand will have excellent service and engagement practices with the community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
