The Witching Hours: A Comics Anthology
A graphic novel anthology about witches, written and illustrated by women and non-binary artists from B.C.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Mon, March 25 2019 3:32 AM UTC +00:00.
'Tis " the witching time of night",
Orbed is the moon and bright,
And the stars they glisten, glisten,
Seeming with bright eyes to listen —
For what listen they?
For a song and for a charm,
See they glisten in alarm,
And the moon is waxing warm
To hear what I shall say.
- John Keats
The Witching Hours is an anthology of comics about magical women written, illustrated and edited by women and non-binary persons. We want to explore the range of what a witch can be as well as celebrate powerful and magical women. The book will feature 11 stories ranging from fantasy to horror to slice of life, written and drawn by some of the best comics creators in Western Canada. The Witching Hours will have stories from A Woodward, Jess Pollard, Kris Sayer, Kathleen Gros, James Brandi, Eden Cooke, Krista Gibbard, Tuna, April dela Noche Milne, Monica Disher and Hannah Myers, with a beautiful cover drawn by Julia Iredale.
The anthology is edited by Hannah Myers, Vice President of Cloudscape Comics. The Cloudscape Comics Society is a non-profit comics collective based out of Vancouver, Canada. Cloudscape seeks to promote and publish independent comic creators in British Columbia. Cloudscape has published eight anthologies, but The Witching Hours is unique in focus, design, and aesthetic. The Witching Hours is not recommended for young readers and contains some nudity, strong language, and violence.
The book will be printed in glorious duotone, and our artists have done some amazing magic with just two colours.
A Woodward draws beautiful and fantastical animals on paper and skin.
Jess Pollard writes and illustrates a fantasy comic about a lizard and a human.
Kris Sayer is the world's foremost expert in hand-to-hand combat with a giant spoon.
Kathleen Gros writes about teens and werewolves, sometimes at the same time.
James Brandi is a little punk, a smidgeon occult.
Eden Cooke draws moonlit forests and misty lighthouses.
Krista Gibbard expertly illustrates fantasy and history.
Rachel "Tuna" Petrovicz draws bewitchingly and often adorably.
April dela Noche Milne harnesses emotion and relatability in her work.
Monica Disher sketches angular ladies with attitude.
Hannah Myers draws comics about romance and paints portraits of cats.
Cloudscape has received a grant from the province of B.C. which goes a long way towards making this book a reality, and has allowed us to lower our Kickstarter goal considerably while still letting us pay the artists a respectable sum for letting us print their stories. We still need $10,000 Canadian to get The Witching Hours into print and into your hands. That's about $7,500 US. Including the Kickstarter and the grant, 57% of our budget will go towards paying the artists. 23% will go towards printing the book, 16% to shipping, and 4% to Kickstarter and credit card fees (which is more like 8% when you subtract the grant).
The Witching Hours will be a beautiful book on its own, available in corporeal or incorporeal forms (ie, an ebook). But in addition to that, we have a lot of other cool rewards planned.
Nina Matsumoto(Sparks) designed a killer pin for us. It will be 1.5"x 1.35" in size and have an anodized metal iridescent sheen to it.
Bones of the Coast
The Witching Hours goes great with Cloudscape's best-selling horror anthology, Bones of the Coast. Unfortunately, the print version of Bones of the Coast is completely sold out. Fortunately, we have an ebook edition of it that goes with The Witching Hours nearly as well.
The Witching Hours - Home Brew
The Bonus Edition includes this excellent bookplate sticker and bookmark designed by the talented Sydney Warnes.
The Witching Hours - Arcana
The Arcana Edition includes everything in the Home Brew Edition, but also includes Nina's enamel pin.
The Witching Hours + Wyrmwood High
Another past Cloudscape book that makes a great accompaniment to The Witching Hours is contributor Kathleen Gros' first graphic novel, Last Night at Wyrmwood High. It's an all-ages story of a grad prank gone wrong at a cursed high school where everyone is a witch or a werewolf or a monster or a magical creature. You'll also get a book plate, book mark and EBook versions of both.
Library of Shadows
A lot of the artists featured in this book create their own artists books and zines. We've collected an assortment from 6 of the artists featured in this book and have 5 collections available. If you pick this reward, you'll get a package of zines including Aureole by Eden Cooke, New Divinations by Kathleen Gros, Elf Fashions by James Brandi, SHOO! and Glamour Toad by Hannah Myers, Liquid Shell (issues 1-3) by Jess Pollard, and A Vancouver Alphabet by April dela Noche Milne. Only 5 sets available.
The Witching Hours - Black Sabbath
You'll receive everything in the Arcana reward tier plus your book will be signed and sketched by the editor, Hannah Myers with a personal thank you note. You'll also get a collection of Hannah's zines including Misery Loves Company (Issues 1-3), Internet Dating Etiquette, Shoo!, The Theory of Everything, and Glamour Toad.
$15,000 - If we reach this goal, we can pay the artists even more for their hard work. We'll be adding an extra $20 a page to their pay cheques!
$20,000 - If we reach this goal, we can pay the artists even more for their hard work. We'll be changing the extra $20 a page to an extra $40 a page!
Risks and challenges
"The Witching Hours" will be Cloudscape's ninth Kickstarted book, and eleventh crowdfunded publishing project. Sometimes there are delays in production or shipping, but so far we have delivered on every project we've promised. We just finished a Kickstarter for another book, "Chicken Soup and Goji Berries," which hasn't been printed or shipped yet, but so far everything is on schedule. There are always risks involved in a new project. The art is done but the book layout is not, so something could go wrong there, or the book printing could be delayed, or something could go wrong with our shipping pipeline. We have an organization full of qualified volunteers who will be doing their best to iron out problems if they develop.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
