MEGA FAUNA: Our Best Anthology Yet
MEGA FAUNA is a full-colour anthology of awesome comics written and drawn by members of the Cloudscape Comics Society. This is our first book where every story is accessible to all ages, and also our best book yet. 25 stories over 200 pages follow the adventures of a girl who finds a pet engineered to give her confidence, a boy who meets a mammoth, the world's ugliest unicorn, a praying mantis that needs help on his blind date, two kids who have stolen a monster's head (and have to give it back), a troll with serious goat-related problems, the true origin of the Japanese beckoning cat, and much more.
MEGA FAUNA will feature comics by Sfé R. Monster (Eth's Skin), Nina Matsumoto (Simpsons Comics, Yokaiden), Angela Melick (Wasted Talent), Edison Yan (Scribblenauts), Ian Boothby (Simpsons and Futurama Comics), Colin Upton (Self-Indulgent Minicomics), Alina Pete (Weregeek), Kathleen Jacques (Band VS Band), Eric Johnson (The Graphic Canon Vol. 1), and Jonathon Dalton (Lords of Death and Life, A Mad Tea-Party); as well as previous Clousdscape contributors Toren Atkinson, Chenoa Gao, Kris Sayer, Chris Leinonnen, Oliver McTavish-Wisden, Bevan Thomas, Reetta Linjama, Shannon Campbell, Ksenia Kozhevnikova, Cameron Morris, Jeri Weaver, Micah Iwaasa, Shannon LeClerc, Kate Ebensteiner, and Jeff Ellis; and newcomers Troy Wilson, Aviv Itzcovitz, Everett Patterson, Ian Thomas, Matthew Klippenstein, Shevon Singh, Ryan McDiarmid, John Boechler, Sarah Chometsky, Sunny Shah, and Molly Nemecek.
We Are Cloudscape Comics
The Cloudscape Comics Society is a non-profit group dedicated to the comics community in British Columbia, Canada. We've produced seven previous anthologies with a rotating cast of local creators, both seasoned veterans and rising stars. There are a lot of people in BC making awesome comics, and we want to share them with the world.
Cloudscape also teaches classes and runs programs for numerous young people out of our headquarters in South Vancouver. We needed a book we can share with ALL of our students and community members. MEGA FAUNA is that book!

So Many Rewards
We have so much stuff you can order to help us raise the money to print MEGA FAUNA. There is the book itself, of course, as well as ebooks, our previous anthologies, and books produced by some of our talented members. The "Rare Monster Cards" feature art and stats for weird and wonderful creatures you can collect and own. You can even commission one of our artists to draw a portrait of your pet.
Please note: a lot of the books on offer are not actually for all ages. They're pretty good, though. I promise.
The MEGA FAUNA Budget
The good news is Cloudscape has already received a grant to help pay for the production of MEGA FAUNA! The bad news is, as generous as that grant is, printing a full-colour book isn't cheap. Here's how the money breaks down.
- $6300 for printing 1500 copies of MEGA FAUNA
- $800 for sales tax on printing the books
- $1000 for shipping out rewards
- $400 for Kickstarter fees and credit card fees
- $1200 for producing all the additional rewards listed
Our grant covers $5000 of that. That leaves $4700 that we still need to raise.
Beyond the Target
If you are all very generous and we can surpass our target of $4700, then exciting things start to happen. Cloudscape has been a labour of love for seven years, but we have never been able to pay our anthology contributors the rates that they deserve. We want to change that with MEGA FAUNA.
Any money raised between $4700 and $6000 will be divided up fairly amongst the artists and writers who have worked so hard on this book. Beyond $6000, if we can make it that far, 50% of all further revenue will also go to the creators. Paying artists is the right thing to do. We can do it, AND make an awesome book, with your help.
How do I pick more than one reward?
Basically what you have to do is pledge the full amount (one reward plus the other), pick one of the rewards, and message us to let us know that you want both.
Do you really ship anywhere in the world?
Yes. Believe it or not, there's not much difference in price between shipping a book to Toronto and shipping a book to France. France just takes longer to get there. All prices include shipping.
Can I order books for my comic book store?
Yes, although Kickstarter has strict rules surrounding bulk orders. Message us with your store's address and how many copies you want (ten or less), and we'll calculate a price that includes an individual shipping rate.
Does this reward include X?
We've crafted the rewards to include as little overlap as possible, so that you can be more picky about what you get. If the description of a reward doesn't say it includes a thing, it doesn't include that thing. If you want some combination of rewards not listed, send us a message.
Risks and challenges
Cloudscape has successfully printed seven previous anthologies, the last three using online fundraising sites. Some of those have been delivered late, but they've all been delivered. The numbers quoted in the budget section are all based on our previous fundraiser results and the latest price quote from the printer.
At the start of this campaign, all the stories in the anthology are finished and have been collected. Jeff is working hard to design and assemble the file to send to press, and it should be done by the end of the campaign. We'll be printing the book in Canada, so there is little risk of a delay in delivery.
Delays sometimes happen though, for unexpected reasons. I'll be keeping backers updated with any important news on the process whether we're on time or not, and answering any questions that come my way. We've got five awesome, experienced creators running the Cloudscape board, and we're giving this project our all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
