Plug becomes "Lima"

Hello everybody,

We have important news for you.

In response to a legal claim, we have decided to change the name of our project to "Lima". There's nothing to worry about: the campaign will continue normally and this modification will be completely transparent for you.

However, we really need your help to spread the word on Internet.

Nobody knows us as "Lima" on the web, and just "liking" our new social accounts can help us change that.

We have:
- a brand new Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MeetLima
- a new Twitter handle: @MeetLima
- a new website: http://meetlima.com

...and 0 likes.

Let's rebuild a community around our new name, and continue the campaign. The show musts go on!

Thanks, a real lot, for your help.

Best,

The CGC Team.

I've been tweeting and re-tweeting especially to "known" geeks like Danny Sullivan.... I am sooo excited!

Ok so I back the First Batch, how do I add $79.00 the CLASSIC Second batch 1 Plug device, delivery April 14th? ...just add another $79.00?

Is it Leye-mah like the bean, or Lee-mah like the city in Peru?

What a shame, Plug was a better name than Lima, even though it was rather generic... Lima doesn't really sound or feel like anything, other than the city IMO.

I honestly think you should come up with something better, something more describing of the product — and create a new logo that compliments that. Right now it looks like two different things put together for no reason. Infinity and the capital of Peru, or lime? Doesn't make much sense.

Anyway, what a cool project! I'm really looking forward to get my hands on a Lima : )

I honestly think that it is fair and reasonable to share the company name with backers -- but to each their own.

If the company that presented legal action didn't want a possible backlash, they could have handled the issue better.

Should have called it the "Not-Plug" just to rub it in to whoever it was :P

      "Lima" = "Five" / "5" in Malay

Thanks a lot for your support.
A name change in the middle of a campaign is no easy task.

We chose Lima because we wanted something fresh that was unrelated to our business. Lima is the spanish word for Lime. It's pronounced like the capital city of Peru, of the same name.
To our ears it transmits the same air of simplicity that's so important in our product.
The more we hear it, the more we like it :)

We won't give more info about the legal claim we received. Here wouldn't be the place.
What's important is to get the campaign going, and to make Lima a reality. Thanks for being part of it!

I always want to know what litigious company causes issues like this -- I would love to be able to avoid giving them money in the future.

Umm... What about a G+ page? The fifth most used app on Android devices? I couldn't care less about fB and only get on Twitter about once a week.....

I remember LIMA as a brand for trains and scenery at h0 scale (NW Europe). Let's hope that the new name *will* be a success.

@Warren Gill - I thought the logo looked fairly similar to Infinitec's

(Hopefully they don't get the crazy idea to take legal action on the infinity symbol with slight separations...)

I don't get it. PLUG is a word, granted Lima is the capital of Peru or a bean, Plug was good. I don't get it as NO ONE could have trademarked the word Plug. It's like Apple, I eat apples but I use Apple computers. Whatever...don't care, just need the device in my hands to drop away from dropbox or Google (aka NSA) drive.
Question, this will let us 'share a link' to make folders available across the net? I never paid much attention to the technicals, just the thought of personal cloud and I was sold.

Gotta love BS like this."No, you can't use this plain English word because we kinda think we own it and believe we should get payed when anyone uses it."

      Hi CGC Team,

      okay legal claims are bull!

So no voters choice but support and spreading the word :-)

Did Peru sign the new name, not that anybody will claim in a few [timeframe].

      All the Best

Aww that sucks, I liked "Plug." Very simple. Lima reminds me of lima beans, but I think yours is pronounced Lee-mah?

      Hi Lima (aka PLUG)

Can you share the "Legal Claim" that you encountered, that made you change your name?

      Thanks!

The logo reminds me a LOT of Arduino's: http://arduino.cc/en/
Same infinity symbol (without the +/-), similar color scheme.
      On purpose? Happy coincidence?

Who in the world has a legal claim on the word 'plug' -- and how is their claim even enforceable? Don't they have to constantly defend the name for their claim to be valid -- and since it's an everyday word....

Does this mean you're going to need (or, well, want?) to redo the plastic molds? Right now the device is a little rectangularish...round off those corners and you've got a great Lima Bean. That would make me quite happy, and fit the name well...Lima Box just isn't quite the same. Lima Plug, er, shrug.

Thanks for the rename. I always hated to talk about 'Plug' because everyone thought I mean some special toys to use at night…

    31. fmotta on

I am glad to see that there seems to be a reasonable way of resolving such a situation and we are not faced with another "Drive With Lynx" debacle where the project died because it was shut down rather than just renamed. Lynx lost most of its impetus and many backers backed... OUT so the project died a miserable death when the project manager failed to renew the video and marketing collateral and just kvetched as it died.

    32. Ragnar on

Are you going to talk about what influenced the name choice?

    33. Ragnar on

Wow that sucks! But at least it happened sorta early on. At this point it is something you can recover from!
