About

When you see this label on a product, it means the company displaying it has measured, reduced, and offset their entire carbon footprint.

We're making a label to show which businesses have achieved total carbon neutrality. We are off to an awesome start, but we want to scale this endeavor and scale it quickly. We've already got 50 brands, but want to get that number into the 1000's within 12 months. To do that, we need your help.

Can't trust a Kickstarter without press.

Read about our efforts in Fast Company, CBS News, Mens Journal, INC Magazine. Member of the press? Hit us up here: chris.dickey@purpleorangepr.com. Access our media kit here: climateneutral.org/mediakit

They also aren't that expensive - just a fraction of a business's revenue. Just look at the cost for total carbon neutrality with these products:

Solutions to seriously mitigate climate change exist, but they are not free. You know what is free right now? Emitting greenhouse gases. Let's change that.

By joining Certified Climate Neutral, businesses can choose to pay for all of their carbon emissions and accelerate the implementation of low-carbon technologies. Becoming Climate Neutral Certified is so affordable, immediate, and measurably impactful that it should be the minimum standard for what it means to be a sustainable business.

To be Climate Neutral Certified, we help a business do 4 things:

When we measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions, we use tCO2e as a unit of measurement. This refers to a metric ton (or tonne) of carbon dioxide equivalent, a standard that allows all types of greenhouse gases to be consistently quantified.

Requirements for measuring:

  •  Businesses must measure their entire carbon footprint. This is called a Scope 1, 2, and 3 measurement, and it includes direct and indirect emissions from every part of a company's supply chain. See FAQ for more info on these scopes.
  •  We make it easy for businesses to measure to a unified standard. The complexity of measurement is currently a barrier to entry for many businesses wishing to go neutral. We're developing tools that make the measurement process easy and standardized. See FAQ for more on these tools.

Requirements for reducing:

  •  Businesses must commit to 2 new reduction efforts every year. They must be meaningful and achievable within the upcoming year.
  •  We help businesses pick their priorities. Reduction opportunities vary widely across (and even within) industries. We help businesses identify the most impactful efforts for their unique operation.

To fight climate change, businesses need to reduce their emissions. But they must do more than just reduce. Why?

Until renewable energy has replaced fossil fuels the world over, nearly every business will have carbon emissions directly or indirectly attributable to them. And that's why the next step is so critically important:

When you purchase a carbon offset, you are paying a project developer to remove a specified amount of greenhouse gases (CO2e) from the atmosphere.

For every tonne of CO2e a business emits, they must pay to remove an equal amount of CO2e from the atmosphere elsewhere. There already exists a robust market of offset developers, brokers, and registries, so investing in these projects can happen immediately.

Requirements for offsets:

  •  Businesses must offset all the emissions they cannot immediately reduce. Our motto: reduce what you can, offset the rest.
  •  We ensure businesses purchase offsets with a verified impact. Not all offsets are equal. We steer businesses to offsets that have been audited and verified according to the most stringent scientific standards. See FAQ for more on offset verification.

Why offsets? Because offsets:

Carbon offsets are not a license to pollute, and businesses cannot become Climate Neutral Certified simply by purchasing offsets. Reduction is an important pillar of our certification process, and if a business does not have detailed reduction plans in place, we will not certify them.

How do we know carbon offsets work?

Strict third party verification. We guide businesses to offset purchases via one of several international carbon registries. These registries are independent 3rd party bodies that ensure offsets meet strict quality standards:

Check out their websites for more info, and see our FAQ for more details on how carbon offset projects become verified: Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve, Verified Carbon Standard, United Nations Clean Development Mechanism, American Carbon Registry.

Carbon offsets can work on a massive scale. Right now, the world emits 56 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases (tCO2e) every year. The world market for voluntary carbon offsets is about 56 million tonnes, at an affordable $3 per tonne. Offset project developers could produce hundreds of times more offsets without changing their affordability. When it comes to the supply of low-carbon technologies, the blue sky is nearly endless. We just need to create more demand and scale the market.

That's where Climate Neutral comes in. See FAQ for a detailed explanation on the economics of carbon neutrality.

What does measuring, reducing, and offset look like for a company?

Glad you asked:

 Requirements for Labeling

  •  Once a business has done the first 3 steps, they can label their products Climate Neutral Certified. This label empowers consumers to make carbon neutral purchases.

Your financial contribution to Climate Neutral will help accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

We need to hit the pavement and recruit more businesses to join Climate Neutral Certified so that we can turn this label into a household name. We also need a skilled staff to measure a business's footprint, assist in finding the best ways to reduce that footprint, and help businesses purchase verified offsets with confidence. Help us tackle this to-do list.

To make a dent in climate change, systemic action must be taken. Climate Neutral Certified presents a framework for that action. This Kickstarter campaign is your chance to kick that widespread action into gear.

So back this campaign. Bring this label to life. Together, we’ll fight climate change faster, ushering in the low-carbon future that our planet so desperately needs.

Co-founded by two companies that believe in redefining the status quo for both product design and corporate responsibility, Climate Neutral is a made up of a group dedicated to accelerating our transition to a low-carbon future.

Also, we could not pull off this endeavor without the help of our friends at Robotic Raptor and Jellop

Questions? We've got so many answers.

Our project FAQ is densely packed with articles that wax eloquent on the many topics surround Climate Neutral and Climate Neutral Certified. Furthermore, check out the FAQ on the Climate Neutral website for even more info.

Risks and challenges

One of the key things we hope to fund with this campaign is the creation of a tool that enables businesses of all types and sizes to easily measure their carbon footprint. Such tools exist, but they tend to be industry specific, or not very user friendly, or both. We hope to have our tool developed and ready to use on a large scale by Jan 1, 2020. But there's a chance it might take longer than we expect to finalize. If that happens, we will use more manual methods to help committed brands measure their footprints.

Beyond that, the risks we face in executing the deliverables of this project are minimal, and they pale in comparison to the risks we face if we don't accelerate our transition to a low-carbon world. Just remember: solutions to climate change exist. They just need to happen much, much faster. And that's why we're here, asking for your help.
