About this project
$5,000 And Beyond!
Oh, there you are! Hold on a sec'...I see you looking at those numbers up there in the corner and hovering over your browser's BACK button. You're thinking "It's all over and they don't need me, now."
Well, you're wrong, Spaceman!
Yes, we made the $5,000 goal to guarantee that Alien Frontiers will be printed. But the dirty little secret is that $5,000 is only about a third of the actual printing costs and I'm draining my savings to make up the additional $10,000
Ya, that's a chunk-o-change...so every new backer we get between now and June 26th will help a lot to defray those additional costs. If you sign up as a $50 Backer right now you'll get the game when it's printed (we're hoping for August or September) and some spiffy bonuses that won't be available after June 26th. And if you REALLY want some sweet rewards, just look at the higher backer packages.
OK, that's the pitch and the plea...now, jump in and see what it's all about. An Overview of The Game
Alien Frontiers is a board game of resource management and planetary development for two to four players. During the game you will utilize orbital facilities and alien technology to build colony domes in strategic locations to control the newly discovered world.
The game board shows the planet, its moon, the stations in orbit around the planet, and the solar system’s star. The dice you are given at the start of the game represent the spaceships in your fleet. You will assign these ships to the orbital facilities to earn resources, expand your fleet, and colonize the planet.
Winning the game requires a mix of strategy and luck as you assign your fleet, integrate alien technology and territory bonuses into your approach, and block your opponents from implementing their own plans. Do you have what it takes to conquer an alien frontier? A Few Words from the Game Designer
My name is Tory Niemann and I’ve been designing games (with varying levels of success) since I could play them. I came up with the basic framework of Alien Frontiers in early 2009. Even from those first primordial play tests with the wife, I could see I had something good. Unlike many games I’d made, it was fun. It wasn't finished, but it was fun.
Perhaps the most unusual influence on this project was the game Kingsburg by Luca Iennaco and Andrea Chiarvesio. The influence was not from the game itself (I hadn’t played it at the time), but a brief review of the game I read online. From that synopsis, I developed an idea of how the game was probably played, and I thought it sounded interesting. Later I found that my concept of this game was totally wrong because the description I’d read was misleading, but the game I’d thought it was still intrigued me. Another influence was the dice game To Court the King by Tom Lehmann. I really enjoyed the concept of rolling dice and then changing them in the most creative way to suit your purpose, but I wanted a deeper game than To Court the King provided. I combined these two influences to create a new, unique game.
Originally, the game was called Race for Mars, or, as my wife called it, "that Mars game." It was printed on two pieces of cardstock and used cubes of sculpting clay for resource tokens. After several revisions and reworkings, I shifted the theme of the game to colonizing of an extrasolar planet and named it Alien Frontiers.
Now, after extensive play testing, dozens of changes, adjustments, and tweaks, Alien Frontiers is on the verge of being a REAL game. Most importantly to me, it’s a game that I really enjoy playing and others love too. This is an exciting time for me as the designer and I can't wait to get Alien Frontiers out to the public.
