RAISING A HERO is the first story of a new illustrated children's series, from the acclaimed author of IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE.
Books are based on individual dogs (including puppies!) who have jobs helping people.
Created by New York Times bestselling author Laura Numeroff, and Sean Hanrahan, the Work for Biscuits series will be designed and published by Cleverkick, with illustrations by New York Times bestselling illustrator Lynn Munsinger.
Dedicated to the working dogs, volunteer puppy raisers, trainers, veterinarians, administrators, and donors serving people with disabilities, RAISING A HERO is an important project that can change lives.
Learning through the eyes of an adorable puppy, this story represents to children a determination to overcome challenges and barriers through kindness.
It's a book that will inspire any reader.
The story is told by Max, a two-month old Labrador-retriever, who explains to readers his life’s purpose: to be a service dog and help people.
"It’s kind of like being a hero!
Part of my training is being where there are lots of people, cars, and other dogs! It helps me get used to everything around me.
When Sam and I go out, I get to wear my special yellow vest. It lets people know I’m in training.
I always feel important when I have it on.
When we get home, Sam takes off my vest, and I put it back in my drawer. That means my work time is over.
Now we get to play and have fun."
Max and his young puppy raiser, Sam, work diligently at school, around town and at home to prepare Max for what comes after puppy raising — advanced training and then the opportunity to be paired with someone.
The two go on adventures and discover what it means to help others with special needs, like cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome, and other disabilities.
“I’ve always wanted to write about service dogs."

The $30,000 Question: Why Kickstarter?
Laura's editors rejected an early manuscript about a therapy dog, one suggesting it was more suitable for the ASPCA to publish. In her attempt to develop the book independently, Laura took her passion project to Kickstarter with the help of her friend and co-creator, Sean Hanrahan.
Laura is best known for her book, IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE [HarperCollins, 1985]. The IF YOU GIVE series that followed has sold over 17 million copies internationally.
More than 40 of Laura's stories have been printed by top publishing houses including HarperCollins, Disney-Hyperion, and Simon & Schuster — and totaling more than 30 weeks on the New York Times Bestselling list.
Illustration: Lynn Munsinger
Perfect for ages 3-7, RAISING A HERO will be beautifully crafted to highlight Lynn Munsinger's illustrations.
Laura and Lynn have worked together on many books, including THE JELLYBEANS [Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2008], WHAT BROTHERS/SISTERS DO BEST" [Chronicle, 2009], PONYELLA [Disney-Hyperion, 2011], and NIGHTY-NIGHT, COOPER [Houghton Mifflin, 2013].
Lynn Munsinger has sketched the entire book and will begin working on changes next month before beginning the final illustrations.
Our Partner: Canine Companions for Independence
RAISING A HERO is inspired by Ellie, a Canine Companions for Independence service dog, who served Devin, a young man with cerebral palsy, for 10 years.
Once published, the sale of RAISING A HERO will support Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly skilled assistance dogs.
CCI has contributed upwards of 4,500 dogs across the country since 1975 and has been an enthusiastic partner and inspiration to our team.
Money: Where It's Going
Books are really expensive to print. The majority of the cost of this project is printing and shipping. We have a strong appreciation for good quality materials and color so we'll be sure to work with our printer carefully over the next several months.
We also need to pay for reward fulfillment and shipping costs. For two years, our team has been extremely frugal to afford our beautiful Kickstarter video and promotional materials.
You wouldn't believe how many people are giving their time and services to help us work within a limited budget.

Risks and challenges
We do not anticipate any significant challenges or risks in completing the project. We’ve enlisted talented people across many professions, including publishing, app development, legal, marketing and storytelling.
As with any printed project, we will work closely with our printer to ensure our quality standards are met.
We've also planned ahead for how we will fulfill rewards to be sure yours is packaged and delivered on-time, with care, and to the right place.
We are confident we can bring this project to you and the rest of the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
