What is it?
The ClearShot was designed to improve smart phone photography. It is an expandable credit card sized stand that acts as a tripod, and is compatible with every smart phone. YES, this includes iPhone 5! A utility patent application has been formally submitted to the USPTO this month and is pending.
Due to lack of a better method, the "arm shot" has become acceptable. You know the drill, you stretch your arm out to take a photo of you and a friend, and end up with an arm in the shot and a double chin as a bonus. Of course, you always have the option to trust your $500+ phone in the hands of an incompetent stranger.
Why do I need it?
The reason for the ClearShot is simple - everybody wants to take better photos, but nobody wants to carry more stuff. The mini tripod+phone adapter has no place in the pocket of a cell phone photographer.
With the ClearShot, I take it out of my wallet, instantly click it into its ready position with a pinch of two fingers, drop in my phone, set the photo timer, and then I’m free to be creative with the shot. It works in both portrait and landscape positions, and all angles between 0 degrees (vertical) to 45 degrees. Turning the phone around allows negative (downward) angles from -45 to 0 degrees . It’s stable, quick, easy, and the ultimate minimal design.
Useful in a variety of situations:
- Photography (especially when travelling)
- Video tripod
- FaceTime/Skype calls
- Time Lapse
- Watching movies
- With a portable wireless keyboard for email and text messaging
The ClearShot was designed to work with literally any phone, with or without a case*:
- All iPhone Models (even with cases as large as the OtterBox)
- Android Phones
- Windows Phones
- Oversized Phones like Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, and Note (due to the larger size and weight of these "tablet" phones, it will hold at angles of 45 and 90 degrees, but not angles between 45 and 90)
*Range of motion is slightly limited for thicker phones
Size was the single most important form factor. It is wafer thin measuring only 0.09" (equal to 3 stacked non-embossed credit cards) and slightly shorter than a standard credit card to ease insertion into a wallet. I have not yet encountered any men's or women's wallet where the ClearShot does not fit.
We need your help
As a small startup, the expense of manufacturing quickly puts us in the red. The $20K goal for this campaign will cover tooling costs for the injection mold, and an ultrasonic welding "horn" which is used in a secondary process to weld the area where you see stitching in the prototype photos. In addition, funding will cover raw materials and operating costs for the first production run, which will be black with matte finish.
Manufactured in the USA? That's up to you!
We love the idea of supporting our economy here in the United States. The challenge is obvious: it is significantly more expensive to manufacture locally versus overseas. So we will leave the decision up to you. If we exceed our goal and reach $25K, we will contract a company here in Seattle that is eager for our business. This company produces high quality medical devices and consumer products.
Even if we do end up manufacturing with the overseas counterpart, they operate ethically and pay wages well over the standard. Like the Seattle company, they produce high quality parts, primarily aviation and consumer goods related.
Preorder your ClearShot in various quantities so good-quality photos of you with your friends can make a comeback. We are also offering laser-cut, hand-assembled prototypes with or without custom embroidery for those who are ready to make use of their ClearShot immediately. These prototypes are extremely time consuming to make, but are high quality, durable, and very personal.
Thank you for your support!
