The mural, designed by local artist Kaki Dimock, celebrates our unique Rivanna River basin and the 40th year of the Clean Water Act.
"This design is intended to honor and recognize the importance of the
Rivanna River to this community. Iconic images of the built community
mix with larger-than-life wildlife. The fish are organized in a
celebration of the return of American Shad to the river. Shad only
thrive in healthy, clean water and many involved in the conservation of
the Rivanna look to their return as evidence of their success. The other
fish are shaped like species that live in the river now but have scales
or patterns that reflect aspects of our community that have an impact
on the river: trees, grass, roads, bricks, mountains. There is a way to
balance these aspects to support the river and invite the return of the
The design is arranged in contained layers to reflect our natural world. While the surfaces of our natural topography seem solid, unconditional, permanent, I suggest that they are fragile and fluid, with each reliant on the other, impacted by the other, and closer than we think. The distance between each layer is intentionally thin. And animals in the image are very large. Their size indicates their importance and ubiquitous presence in our lives. They are busy managing the natural, wild world even as we are driving to and fro, throwing things into the garbage or strolling along the downtown mall." -Kaki Dimock
We're so excited to have a wonderful location for this mural on 1st St S, on the back of the Tru Pilates building and right next to the railroad tracks. We hope this busy thoroughfare will cause for many people to take in the colorful mural when they're walking to the downtown mall or the farmers market.
We're hoping to raise $8,000 for this project. You might ask, "Why so much for some paint on the wall?" Well, most importantly, the CMP believes in paying the artist a stipend for their hard work. We also have to pay for the gallons upon gallons of paint, personnel to prep the wall and paint the mural, equipment rental, administrative fees, and advertising fees. It really adds up! While we have some wonderful long-term supporters of the CMP, it only covers our staff costs and we have to get creative to fund each mural!
However, to thank you for your generous donations, we have some really great prizes to offer you exchange. Check them out on the right hand column and see what strikes your fancy. Want to own a Kaki Dimock original? A custom chalk design for your house or business? A guided fishing trip on the Rivanna River? Now is your chance!
*Please note that this project is a fiscal sponsorship of Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA). Though all Kickstarter funds will be received and processed by PCA, this funding will only be used by the Charlottesville Mural Project.

Risks and challenges
Every mural has its challenges. We've definitely learned that by now! But having completed a number of successful projects in the past two years, we feel confident with this mural.
Working around rain is always a challenge. Scheduling volunteers and keeping people busy and organized is another challenge. We'll also need to watch out for that train headed to Norfolk!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
