seol de muun (2013) is a short narrative film that I have been working on for about 6 months. The film is an experimental narrative about a struggling student filmmaker named Onan who loses grasp on his art and life as he struggles to finish a short film shot on 16mm film that he started as his thesis project. Onan loses grasp on his own reality, unable to distinguish between the image of the actress Yoon in his film and his own fleeting relationship with her. Their distance and his alienation become most apparent as he drops out of school and returns to his hometown only to find that nothing can ever be the same again.
Onan's longing for Yoon in Korea fails to exist in any reality beyond his own dark fictional creation: a film he struggles to finish.
/ / / I am interested in the reflective elements of images in our society. There is so much emphasis placed on what would otherwise just be bytes and data. Because of this, national borders can be erased; someone in South Korea can be as close to someone on the other side of the world as their own family members or classmates. The hyper-locality of Nicolás Pereda's Mexican stories can be screened by Thai audiences just as Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films can move audiences in Busan or Tennessee. This language of cinema creates a new free-form glocalism where localized stories can reach global audiences.
I believe that through this outlet, cinema can be used in a poetic way to transcend borders. Most notably this happens through the global film festival circuit. I seek to make something that can live in these outlets and potentially go far within them. After completing this film I plan to submit it to many renowned film festivals around the world.
I need your help to wrap up shooting expenses. I am more than half way finished with principle photography and any amount will be of great help.
Our biggest setback is getting the post-production to a consolidated level for festival distribution. Most of the expenses will be for post, film processing, festival submissions, as well as gas and any additional expenses. Thank you in advance for your help. Risks and challenges
Our biggest goal is getting the post-production to a consolidated level for festival distribution. Since most/all of the principle photography has been shot, I am just working on finishing editing. The biggest necessity for me at this stage is getting the film processed and ready to edit.
