About this project
We all know that politics is a ridiculous game of money and influence. We are working on an iPhone game that lets you play along.
Election War Room 2012 is a tongue-in-cheek strategy game that lets you control the campaigns of Barack Obama or Mitt Romney as they try to win the hearts, minds and votes of Americans. You’ll do it the same way the politicians do -- by spending lots of money!
The game is currently under development and we need your help to push it over the finish line so we can ship in August.
What is this game?
You control the campaign for either Team Obama or Team Romney in the general election. Each turn you need to decide which battleground states you're going to campaign in and which special interests you're going to try and get on your side in order to get enough electoral votes to win the election.
All the buzz words: it's a two-player, asynchronous, turn-based strategy game. If you're a board game player you can think of it as inspired by El Grande.
Our Design Goals
- Make it fun!!!
- Tongue-in-cheek tone with 2-3 minutes of play per turn.
- There must be interesting decisions to make, but it can't feel overwhelming.
- Players shouldn't feel like they need to re-absorb a lot of context when they jump back into the game.
- Games should last about 15-30 minutes if you were playing constantly (8 turns).
Some Game Details
How to win:
The goal is to control more than half of the electoral votes in the key battleground states at the end of 8 turns. Each state has a different number of votes that they're worth. You need 55 or more to win.
You win a state and all it's electoral votes if you have more influence than your opponent at the end of the 8th turn.
Playing a turn:
On each turn a player can make two moves. You can:
Campaign in a state: Pick a state and decide how much money you want to spend. Every $1 M you spend gets you one influence.
Bid on a card: Pick a card that you will bid on and decide how much money you want to spend. If you lose your bid against your opponent, you get to keep your money for next turn. Each card gives you a special ability or has a special effect.
Each player takes their moves in secret and when each player is done the turn resolves at the same time. This helps keep the game moving quickly.
There are a few more things that we're working on around how liberal or conservative you are and how that matches up to what the states think. As we finish tweaking that we'll put that up in the updates section.
Where does the money go?
Development of the game is well underway and your contributions will go towards finishing up the artwork for the cards and letting us do additional rounds of playtesting to make sure the game is super fun!
Stretch goal: $15K
What I'd REALLY love to do in order to make the game reach as broad an audience as possible is develop additional content so that we could make the game free and have people who like the game buy more content (that all our backers would receive for free).
That's a whole other dev cycle, but if we could raise $15k total then we could actually make that happen. If we do that I'll rejigger the rewards to make sure that all backers get all the new content.
As you can see from the rewards, I'm really hoping that I can engage people who are interested in helping shape the game to make it awesome.
I also thought hard about creating rewards that would appeal to folks outside of the game itself.
If you want to run your own Kickstarter you should definitely pick up the $200 reward. I'll share everything that I researched and ultimately tried (the good, the bad and the ugly).
I'm fortunate enough to know some great folks in the game industry and if you want to learn about it and what makes a great game then the $1500 reward could be invaluable. The folks at Boardgame night have a ton of experience and insight.
