7 Classics on War and Politics - New Modern Edition
We aim to publish a new edition of seven classic works of political and military science. These classics are already available in English, but in a format that is difficult to read and understand. Most of these are in English translations that are very old, or miss out on the fundamental insights. Many include a lot of excess commentary which is mostly unnecessary and unhelpful.
Our editing process will reduce the repetition and unnecessary commentary and cruft, and clarify what is essential and insightful in the works using modern English prose. This process is an abridgement:
"[C]ondensing or reduction of a book or other creative work into a shorter form while maintaining the unity of the source."
The goal of this project is to produce a collection of works with clear and modern English that showcases the timeless insights which these classics have within them.
We also want to provide several different formats for these works, including:
The Collection - Seven Classics
The first book in this collection is already complete and has been published separately:
This is one of the most popular editions on Google Play Books, selling 1,354 copies in 2017. Because of this popularity, we want to follow up and include following books in a single digital, print and audiobook edition:
- The Art of War by Sun Tzu
- Analects by Confucius
- Arthashastra by Chanakya (aka Kautilya)
- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
- The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
- Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi
- Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo
This is an international collection, with two books from China, one from India, two from Europe, and two from Japan. The books also span well over 2,000 years of history.
Some of these books are focused on war and military science (Art of War, Book of Five Rings, Hagakure), others are more self-reflective and develop an ethical philosophy (Analects, Meditations), and others still are focused more on politics and ruling (Arthashastra, The Prince).
Each of these works provides a unique and historical perspective regarding these topics, and they complement each other in providing insight into the nature of leadership, war, and politics.

Progress and Next Steps
The initial editing and proofreading have been made to these works, and what is needed is a final edit and layout and formatting of these for publishing the ebook and printed book, as well as production of the audiobook.
How You Can Help
Our funding goal is modest, but it is important that we see some interest for this collection of works, in order to proceed. The cost of printing is significant. Also, we need to pay for international shipping of the book to our backers.
We need your support to help offset the cost of printing, and help make this collection a reality. Thank you for sharing and spreading the news about this Kickstarter campaign!
Risks and challenges
A final copy-editing, and formatting is needed. This should take about a month. The audiobook will take another month. There is only a small risk in delay.
We have been printing and shipping publications internationally for several years, and are working with the same printer as in the past.
One risk would be some delay in printing, due to unforeseen circumstances. We don't expect this, but there is a greater than zero chance this could happen. If something catastrophic were to happen, there would likely be no more than a one month additional delay (for example, needing to change printers).
Shipping is fairly reliable to much of the rest of the world. Very few of the items we ship experience an extended delay, and there is maybe 1 in 200 items that are actually lost. For anyone experiencing this, we will need to reship the item, which might mean an additional six weeks delay. Unlikely, but not impossible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
