From the narrator who brought you the audiobooks Classic Tales of Horror and Classic Tales of Christmas, comes the third offering in the "Classic Tales" audio series: CLASSIC TALES OF HOPE AND COURAGE, featuring works by Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack London, O. Henry, and others!
UPDATE FEB. 6 -- Reached the funding goal; now going for stretch goal -- every $100 over original funding goal allows me to add an extra short story to the audiobook/ebook!
Here's the challenge --
I’ve got a good thing going, having found a small but growing audience for my unique audio presentations of classic short stories and poetry, with each collection in my Classic Tales series centered around a specific, engaging theme. Think of it as old vintage wine in new bottles. (And listen for yourself: the Classic Tales of Horror audiobook is available free to my Facebook fans.)
But the work involved is considerable. It begins with curation -- finding well-written and engaging classic stories and poems that not only fit thematically into the collection, but also work well in an audio context (and by including some works and authors that may be unfamiliar to listeners, I seek to broaden horizons and well as to entertain). Then comes editing and annotating -- making the ebook version accessible to modern readers by adding footnotes and endnotes to explain arcane and archaic references. Finally comes the job of recording and mastering the audiobook up to high artistic standards and to technical standards suitable for publication and distribution on Audible.com, Amazon, and iTunes.
Then it's time for the investment to pay off, as I collect royalties for each sale on those sites. The only real problem is this: the sales of an audiobook tend to accrue very slowly; thus it could take several years for me to ultimately be paid what might constitute a "fair wage" for my work. Since I am not independently wealthy, I need to find a way around this "cash flow" problem, to get paid at least a modest sum of money "up front" for my work to allow me to pay the bills as I increase my artistic productivity.
Et voila -- here's the solution!!
Use KICKSTARTER to finance the production of CLASSIC TALES OF HOPE AND COURAGE! To make this workable, I don't need to pre-sell thousands, or even hundreds of copies of a new work such as this one. Pre-selling just 50 to 100 copies would provide me the necessary upfront financing to make speedy production of this audiobook viable. And believe me, if this Kickstarter project works to enable quick production of this "Classic Tales" collection, there will be future projects to fund further installments in the series! (Next in the queue: Classic Tales of Romance.)
And for each $100 in funding that I receive over my initial goal, I can afford to add another short story to this collection (with some stories only available to my Kickstarter supporters -- not to those that buy the collection later, for a higher price, on Audible, Amazon, or iTunes). In this manner, I could add a maximum of three additional hours of bonus content to the audiobook.
I've already begun production of the audiobook, having completed the recording of one short story (TO BUILD A FIRE by Jack London -- yes, they don't all have a happy ending) and two poems (JABBERWOCKY by Lewis Carroll and INVICTUS by William Ernest Henley). With Kickstarter funding, I'll be able to set aside other endeavors of mine and focus on quick completion of this collection.
Risks and challenges
Coming down with an extended case of laryngitis could cause a delay in production of the audiobook. I have no intention of letting this happen!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
