The story behind the anthology...
Hi. My name is Neil Clarke and I'm the editor of Clarkesworld Magazine and a current Hugo Nominee for Best Editor Short Form. Last July, I suffered a "widow-maker" heart attack that nearly killed me. The damage to my heart was very significant and that led to my doctors installing a defibrillator in my chest. That day, I became a cyborg.
I've been working on Clarkesworld for almost seven years, but I've never edited an anthology that wasn't Clarkesworld-related. I just didn't come across anything that inspired me. Trust almost dying to provide you with inspiration.
As I began looking into the possibility of a cyborg anthology, I quickly noticed that the cyborgs most people think of are villains (Cybermen, Darth Vader, the Borg, etc.). My people make excellent villains, but that only represents the tip of the iceberg. The more I thought about it, the more certain I became that this was the anthology project I had been looking for... a cyborg-edited cyborg anthology. I don't think that's been done before. Besides, cyborgs are cool.
It seems only appropriate that this campaign will end on the first anniversary of my heart attack.
What I'm bringing to the table...
Clarkesworld is a two-time winner of the Hugo Award for Best Semiprozine and our fiction has been nominated for or won the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Sturgeon, Locus, Shirley Jackson, Ditmar, WSFA Small Press and Stoker Awards.
I'll be utilizing the connections I developed through my work at Clarkesworld to solicit original stories for this anthology. In addition, there will also be an open reading period for at least a quarter of the stories because I believe that it is important for magazines and anthologies to provide opportunities for new voices to be heard.
The following authors have already agreed to have a story in UPGRADED:
- Elizabeth Bear
- Helena Bell
- Tobias S. Buckell
- Pat Cadigan
- Greg Egan
- Xia Jia
- Caitlín R. Kiernan
- Yoon Ha Lee
- Ken Liu
- Chen Qiufan
- Robert Reed
- E. Catherine Tobler
- Genevieve Valentine
- Peter Watts
- E. Lily Yu
Current Hugo Award for best artist (and Clarkesworld regular), Julie Dillon, has agreed to create an original piece for the cover of this anthology.
The funding I am seeking will pay for approximately twenty-four stories at the Science Fiction Writers of America's (SFWA) qualifying rate, cover art, design, postage, printing, shipping, various fees and a small stipend for my time. Now that we've hit our goal, additional funds will be directed to the following stretch goals:
- Ebook editions will be provided in both EPUB and MOBI/KINDLE formats.
- All trade paperback rewards will be accompanied by the ebook editions.
- Shipping is included unless otherwise noted. International supporters: Please note the extra fees. Sorry. International shipping is expensive.
- The ebook and trade paperback editions will contain the same stories.
- When a book is listed as signed, it means signed by Neil Clarke unless otherwise noted.
- The four Clarkesworld anthologies offered in this campaign are Realms 1: The First Year of Clarkesworld Magazine, Realms 2: The Second Year of Clarkesworld Magazine, Clarkesworld: Year Three and Clarkesworld: Year Four (coming July 15th).
Risks and challenges
At present, we are planning to have the book available stores in May 2014. Having managed previous book projects, I know that this should give us ample room to deal with potential complications. It is always possible that an author will be late or have to drop out of the project. In such a situation, I'll be calling on my connections and years of experience at Clarkesworld to come up with an appropriate and timely solution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
