Stormcaller is a 96 page full colour Graphic Novel in the final stages of production. If the project is funded successfully, I aim to have the book printed and rewards sent out by December 2017.

THE STORY:

Stormcaller is about a series of initially curious but ultimately terrifying events that overtake the citizens of a small, unidentified town as they go about their daily lives.

These events coincide with the arrival in town of a bizarrely dressed and unspeaking stranger... Or do they?

Stormcaller reveals how insubstantial the ties of common humanity and civilised society can be when things don't quite go the way they should...

I have always been interested in the way in which groups of people can form a collective opinion which then becomes an unstoppable force driving their behaviour. How are these opinions formed and manipulated? Do we really control our own actions?

THE PROJECT:

Initial ideas and illustrations
Initial ideas and illustrations

Stormcaller started life as a set of ideas and illustrations when I was studying at university. My father, Paul, wrote the original narrative and I have gradually added to it and refined it into it's current format.

Building the story, image by image

I decided to go for a hand-made approach when creating illustrations for the book using mostly ink and watercolour. I found that working in this way has allowed me to use water to create the atmosphere I thought was necessary for a story set in stormy weather conditions. The citizens of the town begin to feel powerless and are increasingly at the mercy of the elements. To evoke this feeling, I found an experimental approach was necessary. In some cases I allowed the water to be in control of the piece; having drawn the basic elements, the water could bleed and wash the ink away as the people are subjected to increasingly severe conditions.

After trying out different options I decided that the narrative text should be kept alongside the illustrations and also that the number of illustrations per page should be dictated by the flow of the narrative. I found that this method as opposed to using traditional comic style layouts gave me more freedom to use illustration and dialogue as a means of enhancing the message of the story, rather than replacing it. I found that while the narrative text could tell the story in the past tense looking back on events as they may (or may not) have happened, the dialogue and illustrations could be more immediate, provide additional information and serve to highlight contradiction and hypocrisy in the behaviour of the characters.

WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?

The funding goal of £1000 has been set to cover the cost of a short print run of first edition copies of the book plus kickstarter fees. Any additional funds will be used for the production of stretch goal rewards and the printing of additional copies of the book. After the rewards have been sent out I intend to sell the remaining copies of the book at conventions and retail outlets across the UK and beyond.

REWARDS FOR BACKING INCLUDE:

  • Digital / physical copies of the finished book (all pledges over £3 will receive a digital copy and pledges of £12+ will receive digital and physical copies)
  • Stormcaller A4 posters
  • A4 high quality art prints of the following illustrations from the book:
The Passing of the Storm

STRETCH GOALS:

If we manage to reach £1200 I will also be giving away a set 3 A6 drawing books with different Stormcaller themed cover designs to anyone who has pledged over £12

Risks and challenges

In order to minimise delays, I have ensured that I have completed 90% of the illustrations for the book before launching the kickstarter campaign. Therefore, there is now only a small amount of drawing left to do and backers can see the story come to life in project updates as the final illustrations and page layouts are completed!
