Blue Collars is a new comic book series from writer Tom Smith (The Trade) and artist Clare Thompson (Stormcaller). It is a chilling science fiction tale set within an alternate dystopian future in which totalitarianism masquerades as philanthropy.
In the wake of an economic collapse the cost of living has spiralled out of control. Many people have been forced to take on huge amounts of debt simply to feed and house themselves. In response the Sponsorship Act has been passed, a new law which allows those with means to purchase the debt of other citizens who then must work to repay the debt... with interest.
Issue one introduces us to the character of Joseph Kavanagh a factory-worker who has found himself in this difficult situation. We follow him through the course of a day that is destined to change his life forever and ignite the spark for events that will occur over future issues.
We wanted to create a tale which explores how the greatest harm can be done to a society by those who either pretend, or earnestly believe, to have its best interests at heart and to tell a story about how debt and finance can be used as a means to exercise power.
Through the combination of writing and artwork we wanted to evoke a future where all concerns are secondary to economic gain. To capture this mood we have chosen an inky watercolour style that gives the comic a grimy and smoggy aesthetic. We thought this bleak imagery was a good fit for portraying a society of impoverished people driven by propaganda, false hope and desperation to attain their own financial stability through a new industrial revolution.
Issue 1 will be a standard comic issue sized 32 page full-colour comic and we are looking for funding to finance a small print run in order to have copies to sell at a number of comic conventions around the UK.
We are asking for £600 to cover the cost of this on top of our Kickstarter fee and other goodies and rewards for Kickstarter backers.
Should we reach our stretch goal of £1200 in funding all backers pledging at the £10 tier or higher will receive an exclusive Blue Collars enamel pin designed by Clare Thompson.
Whats up for grabs?
A digital copy of the 32 page comic, this is available to everyone backing at the £2 tier or higher.
A signed physical copy of the 32 page comic.
A sheet of mechanical stickers designed by Clare Thompson.
A choice of 2 A4 prints by Clare Thompson. (backers at higher tiers can bag both)
A signed, limited edition Blue Collars A4 Risograph print designed by Clare Thompson
A Blue Collars enamel pin (design to be confirmed)
Risks and challenges
At the moment the artwork for the comic is 100% complete with only a small number of pages that still have to be lettered. As such it is quite unlikely that we will be unable to deliver the project promptly.
We have both successfully launched and funded a number of Kickstarter campaigns each and as such, know what is expected from us as creators delivering a project and rewards to backers.
There is, of course, a chance we will not be able to reach our funding goal and in this case we will endeavor to self fund a smaller print run in order to have copies for sale online.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
