We say that the cosseting warmth of our rare Scottish cashmere curled sensuously around your neck feels like being tenderly wrapped in motherly love. It's one of the world's most beautiful and sophisticated luxuries, normally found only under exclusive high end labels (that we make for).
We are a family business with decades of experience, and one of Scotland's most respected traditional textile specialists. At our design studio in Edinburgh and historic weaving mill nestled in the Scottish Borders, Nick and Adele live to create gorgeous fabrics and products to covet. Everything is locally made with painstaking care and expertise.
Much of our finest output is retailed under other people's brands: we produce for the world's top designers, high end outlets, and bespoke pieces for connoisseurs attracted by our reputation for uncompromising quality. These are often sold at sky high prices that only a few of us can afford.
Now we’re launching our own label, CLAN, to market the very best examples of our goods accessibly for everyone, through independent outlets. This will offer exquisite products with true provenance, designed for contemporary tastes, and locally made to the highest specifications. In the shops, CLAN won't be cheap, but we'll be affordable.
We’re launching CLAN with an incredible offer for our favourite product: the fabulous extra large Scottish cashmere scarf with ripple finish. As you'll know, Scotland is famous for producing the world's finest cashmere. And it just doesn't get more luxurious than this. It's sumptuously cosy, stunningly gorgeous.
Don't take our word for how special it is.
Listen to a few people we asked to share their impressions...
We're letting you pre-order these fabulous scarves direct at less than one third of the price for anything comparable in even the most competitive shops, let alone the far higher costs in high end outlets where products of this quality are mostly found. This is all-inclusive with free shipping worldwide.
We'll deliver in good time for Christmas. It's the perfect gift for your parents, your lover, your children, your friends - in fact anyone. Just don't forget one (or two) for yourself!
Like all great things, our secret is simple. It’s all about the finest raw materials, followed by dedication to time-proven production methods without compromise.
For this offer we’ve chosen our most popular plain colours and favourite tartans. We want there to be something for everyone, men and women, young or old, conservative or on trend. (And if this campaign goes well, we’ll add more colour ways as stretch goals.)
Great Britain is renowned for centuries of textiles expertise, a heritage we honour. We produce only at our own Scottish mill or with the help of specialist neighbours in the local tradition - never overseas. This provenance is your guarantee of authenticity.
There's a good reason that the best brands avoid the 'fast fashion' factories to source their finest cashmeres exclusively from Scottish mills (possibly from us, under another name!) We take the time to do it right.
We start by specifying only premium 100% woollen spun cashmere fibre (2/28nm gauge for the experts amongst you). We select the finest downy hairs from the warmest underfleece of the animal to give a fabric that’s thick and cosy, and won’t pill or deform like high street brands (that use cheaper short coarse fibre, or even mixes).
Weaving at around 30 ends & picks per inch gives the luxurious handle that feels just so incomparably cosy. We only wish we could let you run it over your skin for real... to cuddle our cashmere is to love it!
After weaving comes the true magic: a series of artisanal processes that turn an already soft fabric into a cashmere quality beyond compare, gently lifting and fluffing the surface while preserving the structure that retains your garment's shape. One of these steps actually involves a machine decked out with natural teasels (the dried barbed heads of Dipsacus, a flowering plant in the family Caprifoliaceae, if you must know).
Then we’ll finish your cashmere with our exquisite ripple treatment. Sorry, we can’t reveal how we do this; it’s a trade secret! But trust us, the effect is stunning. All that really matters is that all this expert TLC gives your scarf a lustrous sheen that simply screams sophistication.
Next we cut to size - and what a size! Most scarves are about 140cm long; ours is 180cm (c. 70”), almost 30% longer. Most are about 25cm wide; ours is 30cm (c. 12”) - that’s 20% wider! It might be the most generously proportioned scarf you’ll ever own.
And as a finishing touch, we purl the fringe at both ends. It's a special detail you’d expect on this standard of accessory. We design and produce all our goods for how we like to wear them ourselves.
The lowest retail price we can find on the web for a cashmere scarf of this quality and length is around £240. And once it has a luxury brand's label on it, it could easily be £380 or even more. Much more.
So how does just £75 sound? That's less than one third of anything comparable. It's under the trade wholesale cost!
And yes, that's all inclusive. Not a penny more to pay.
Too good to be true? It gets better. Order more as extra special gifts for your family and friends and for each additional item we'll ask only £70!
It might sound unbelievable, but we promise it’s for real. Read why below. We'll even include FREE DELIVERY, anywhere in the world. (Signed-for, where possible.) VAT is included for EU customers.
And if you're outside the EU and order more than one, we'll dispatch each individually. So in the US for example each package will be declared at well under $200 in value so there should be no import duties.
If we reach our target, we'll produce a choice of four initial colourways: three plain colours and one tartan. (We'll contact you prior to production to find out which of these you would prefer, to make sure we make the right volume of each.) The initial range is based on our best selling colourways, all suitable for both men and women.
For every £10,000 by which we exceed our target we will introduce an additional colour way (plain or tartan). The first additions would be two other popular choices we wish to stock.
Beyond these we will suggest further choices, and poll all project supporters about which to produce. These will include new designs of our own creation which we want to introduce but cannot currently afford to risk producing. After this poll you will be asked to choose from the final selection.
June-July: Kickstarter Campaign
August-October: Production & Quality Control
Mid November: Delivery (in good time for Xmas!)
(This schedule is conservative, so our timings should be safe even if we overshoot our targets massively.)
We’ve been manufacturing and retailing for years, and enjoy a superb reputation for quality and reliability. But we have never been able to invest in stock, which we need to take products like this to market under our own label.
Cashmere in particular is very expensive to stock (and this is finest quality pure cashmere, remember). And particularly for the special ripple finish, we have to make a large volume at once. So we need your help to produce the stocks required to launch CLAN as our new label. By using crowdfunding we can place orders in volume to bring the unit price right down, giving you access to incredible products at apparently insane prices.
Why (apparently) insane? Well, if we just hit our target, this Kickstarter will actually cost us more than we earn!
But we'll have some scarves left over. That is really what we want, to build up the stocks we need to launch our CLAN label. We all win!
Risks and challenges
We see few significant risks. We are very experienced in producing goods to this quality, and almost always deliver on schedule. There is always a chance of a quality control issue during production. But the worst outcome might be a delay in one colour way, and we'd do our very best still to dispatch in good time for Christmas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
