WHO AM I
Did you play that musical game about alpacas, or did you play that game where Michel Foucault's head chases you until you die, or did you play that text game where Slavoj Žižek makes a text game, or did you play that game where you smash the patriarchy? I made all of those games, and I made them for free and host them for free. I like when things are free.
I blog five days a week at thiscageisworms, too, so maybe you've read something of mine there.
WHY DO YOU NEED MONEY
I put most things I do out on the internet for free because I think that is an important thing to do. But those things aren't actually free. Hosting costs me some money every year. The amount of time I take making free games and writing weird games criticism is in the hundreds of hours a year, and it probably won't ever be less.
So when you give me money for this kickstarter, you make it possible for me to make this game. You buy me cups of coffee and you pay for web hosting, basically.
Additionally, while I am competent at designing and doing the art for a game, I am utterly hopeless at making music for a game. If this kickstarter makes, I would be able to pay some money to someone who had already graciously said they would make a couple tracks for the game.
So I don't want to introduce too much feature creep because that might keep me from actually finishing the game. To make sure that doesn't happen, the next two (and last two) stretch goals are just expanded ways for people to play the game.
I said I would have more details about the music in the game, and here they are. There will be an OST with a few tracks done by Anatra. It will be some ritual ambient stuff. Trust me, it is so good. I'm adding in a new reward tier for this--at the $10 level you will get some high quality MP3s of the OST. It might be three tracks, it might be ten. Who knows.
A while back I had the idea to make a horror game, but first I wanted to know how horror games "worked." That long trek turned into the Designing Horror series on my blog, and what I worked out from that is that I didn't want to make a horror game like all the other indie horror games that are out there.
I also realized that my favorite scary piece of media is Ghostbusters.
So with that in mind, the next game that I make will be a horror game that is probably not all that scary. It will be sort of side scrolly and you can't jump and most of the time it will be about interacting with things and talking to people instead of doing anything game-y. What I am looking at is Hugo's House of Horrors mixed with "His Face All Red" in a tortilla made out of Tom Gauld comics. Side dishes include: that scary scene where Bob crawls over the couch in Twin Peaks, Dan Clowes' Like A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, and some Dear Estherisms.
So maybe that will make a game. It will probably be between five and ten minutes long, will be available for free at heylookatmygames.com, and will come out sometime in August 2013.
I'm keeping a gif-based devthing at this imgur page because why not.
Here are some GIFs I have made during the process of making game assets and trying to make everything work the way I want it to:

Risks and challenges
There aren't any risks. The project isn't huge, I've made a number of art assets, and it is just a slow process of making the game from here on out. I've made a number of games before and they all exist, so it seems like things might be okay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
