Rebirth of the Gangster is a crime, family-driven drama that mixes elements from Othello, Breaking Bad, The Wire, 100 Bullets, and Criminal. The first story arc, "Meet the Family", will run 6 issues. The issue that I'm raising funds for is the second issue in this six-issue story arc.
I've spent the last year brainstorming ideas for the comic, outlining each story arc and issue, and endlessly revising scripts and the synopsis. A few months ago I reached out to Juan, and we've had a productive partnership ever since. We finished the first issue, but I used most of my savings paying Juan for his work. And while it was totally worth it, I don't have the funds to do that again.
That's where you come in!
All of the funds raised for this project will go to pay Juan for his work (and to the small amount I'll have to pay to mail the sketch rewards). I don't want to make Juan a starving artist, and if you're on this website, I'm sure you agree with me.
This is also, unfortunately, why the rewards are all digital (with the exception of the sketches, of course): I don't want to commit to the huge expense of printing issues, shipping them, and encountering complications with a printing and distribution process I'm unfamiliar with. Trust me, this digital-only focus is for your benefit.
Juan and I have already created the first comic and published it digitally, (find it on Amazon here:http://tinyurl.com/grztxe5 or find it for half price--under a dollar!--on Banres and Noble here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/h2grr3y or Selz here: https://goo.gl/vTtp4f). This shows we're familiar with all aspects of the digital comic-creating process. Get the first issue in the rewards, or if you're not sure about funding this project, you can purchase it through the above links to see if you like it and want to fund it. Check out my website for a complete list of sellers.
Although I'd love to surpass my goal, raise more funds and get paid for my work on this project, ultimately I just want to get this comic out there for others to enjoy.
While the main focus is on Marcus, a rich black lawyer, and Hunter, a poor white blue collar worker, there will be a diverse cast of characters. Both of their moms will play heavily into the story--Marcus's mom is a first generation Hmong-American, and part of her story will focus on that struggle.
The two main antagonists to Marcus and Hunter will be Lorena and Kaitlyn. Lorena is a homosexual, Latina cop who grew up in the inner city and struggled with her faith, her sexuality and getting out of the hood. Kaitlyn is a black lawyer who works with Marcus, and she comes from a more privileged background than Lorena.
Lizzeth, a Latina teacher; Dennis, a white man just released from prison; and Devonte, a black man wrongfully imprisoned, close out the rest of our cast of characters. While their story lines might start out separate from Hunter and Marcus, all the characters and story lines will converge. There's a character and a story in this comic for everyone!
Thanks for helping make my dream a reality!
Risks and challenges
I've already written the script for the second issue, so the only complication would come on Juan's part; essentially, if he got picked up by a big name company, he wouldn't be guaranteed to complete this project.
However, in the very unlikely event that this happens quickly enough for Juan to be unable to finish this issue, I'll be able to find another illustrator. Juan is a true professional, so I don't see this happening: I'm just adding this to be completely transparent. Ultimately, that setback would only result in a few week delay on completing the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
