First Stretch Goal Unlocked!
About the Project
Hello! I'm Carlos Martijena I've been a writer and game designer for some two decades under the pen name C.J. Carella. I've written over twenty published gaming books for such companies as Steve Jackson Games, Palladium Books and Eden Studios, including the WitchCraft RPG and Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG. Creating new worlds for people to explore has been my passion all my life.
Armageddon Girl is my first novel. It started out as a setting for a roleplaying game, but the story grew and became a work of fiction. I've always been fascinated with comic book superheroes. I was raised on a steady diet of Marvel and DC Comics, so it's not surprising I wanted to explore the ways in which a world where superheroes were real would differ from our own. When individuals can shatter armies and ravage cities, how will their choices affect the course of history?
I'm also an alternate-history junkie, so detailing the history of a world where supers had existed since the end of WWI became a passion project for me. I had a lot of fun exploring and developing that world, initially as a roleplaying game setting. As I wrote about the world, however, it became about the characters in that world as much as about the setting itself.
I was writing a fiction blurb about a (literally) faceless vigilante, and the blurb grew and became a short story. Then I started working on the young woman the vigilante rescued in the story and the tale snowballed. Christine Dark became the focal point of the story. The cast of characters grew. Face-Off, a jaded vigilante, goes from busting small-time criminals to facing a threat to the entire world. Ultimate the Invincible Man, the most revered hero in the planet, is slowly going insane. Artemis, a glamorous super-heroine is dealing with a crumbling marriage and a continent-spanning conspiracy. Their stories, and others, became this novel, the first of many.
I wrote the first two books in the series (Armageddon Girl and Doomsday Duet) in 2012, and have been trying to find a home for them ever since. Traditional publishing is going through a rough period, unfortunately, so after some unsuccessful attempts, I decided to publish the novels myself.
You can read the first seven chapters of Armageddon Girl here (http://www.cjcarella.com/fiction/chapters_1-3 ) or here ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18243609-armageddon-girl ).
Physics major Christine Dark wasn't doing too well. Her social life sucked, she spent too much of her time playing computer games or reading sci-fi novels (and the occasional paranormal romance), and she felt like she was missing out on everything.
Fate had something special in store for her, though.
Without warning, an unknown force drags Christine out of her world and takes her to an alternate Earth where superhuman beings have existed since the end of World War One. Christine learns she too is more than human. She will come face to face with a dark conspiracy and find out if she is strong enough to stop it.
New Olympus: The Armageddon Girl Companion
Being a game designer as well as a writer, I'm all about world-building. The setting of Armageddon Girl is an alternate history, a parallel Earth where events took a dramatic turn when beings with superhuman abilities - New Olympians, or Neolympians or Neos in common parlance - started to show up, becoming mystery men, villains and vigilantes, and reshaped the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.
New Olympus features short stories set in different times and places, some featuring characters who play a major role in Armageddon Girl, others dealing with tales that provide new insights into the novel's setting. In addition to the short stories, the companion book has a summary of the world's history, society and politics, provides information about the powers and abilities of Neolympians, and has write-ups of all the prominent characters in Armageddon Girl. I've also included notes on using the world as a setting for a roleplaying game, using the game rules of your choice, and giving some specific pointers for the Unisystem rules which I developed and have been used in such games as the WitchCraft RPG and All Flesh Must Be Eaten.
The Companion Book will be released at the same time as Armageddon Girl, and is offered here as an additional reward.
Becoming a Character
As a special set of rewards, I'm providing the opportunity to become a character in the storyline. There are three possible ways you can be part of the New Olympus universe. If you choose the Tuckerized Reward, a character (based on yourself and using your name or a pseudonym of your choice) will be featured in Doomsday Duet, the first sequel to Armageddon Girl. This character will get at least a couple of lines of dialogue and will play a minor role in the novel.
The next two reward levels are more involved. You can choose to appear as a full-fledged character in one of two short stories for New Olympus. In "Death at a Con," your character will play an important role in the nefarious events of HeroiCon 2010, a Neo fan event where superheroine Hyperia is targeted by an evil force. In "Freshman Class" your character will be a superhero, one of the new students of the Freedom institute, the premiere Neolympian school where newly-minted Neos learn to control their powers. As soon as the project meets its basic funding goals, I will send out a questionnaire for you to provide me with a description, name, character traits and possible choices the character would make if faced with some specific situations: those choices will help shape the outcome of the story. Or if you'd rather be surprised, let some or all of those questions blank and I will make things up. It's your choice!
Where The Funds Will Go
Self-publishing isn't for the faint of heart. Without the backing of a publisher, I will have to pay for advertising, proofreading and product development. Printing, shipping and handling and the Kickstarter fees will eat almost half of the pledge money right off the bat. Whatever is left will help finance initiatives to make sure people find out about the book(s) and that the final product is as polished as possible. They will also be used to print copies for promotional purposes and (if we hit our stretch goals) provide artwork for New Olympus.
The $2,500 is a bare-bones budget. If we reach higher funding levels I will be able to do even more things with the two books. With higher fun
$5,000 - Artwork - UNLOCKED
If we reach $5,000, I will have the budget to add more artwork. New Olympus will have some illustrations regardless, but if we reach this level of funding I will add 12 illustrations to Armageddon Girl, in addition to using the additional funds to improve the quality of both the electronic and physical editions of the book.
$7,500: Armageddon Girl Limited Edition Hardcover
If we reach this goal, I will produce a limited hardcover edition, signed, inscribed and numbered. The final number of copies will be 100 or the total number of Kickstarter orders plus an additional 25-50 copies for promotional purposes, whichever is higher. If we reach that goal, two new rewards will appear: the Deluxe Package (replacing the trade paperback with a limited edition hardcover) for $40, and the Whole Enchilada Deluxe (featuring the Armageddon Girl hardcover and a trade paperback of New Olympus) for $50. Backers who get one of the Early Bird Specials, as well as those who choose one of the special rewards (Tuckerized, Become a Character or Become a Neolympian) will have their copy of Armageddon Girl upgraded to a hardcover at no extra charge.
$10,000: New Olympus Deluxe
If we reach that goal, I will also produce a Limited Edition Hardcover of New Olympus and add interior art to both the trade paperback and hardcover editions of that book. I've gotten pledges from some very talented artists who want to contribute to the book. If we reach that goal we'll add two other rewards: A New Olympus stand alone hardcover for $35 and The Whole Enchilada Gold (both books as limited edition hardcover) for $70. Backers who got one of the special rewards will get both books in hardcover at no extra charge. Those who selected the Early Special - the Whole Enchilada reward will also get both hardcovers at no extra charge, as our way of saying thanks for having faith in this book from the beginning.
Risks and challenges
The risks are fortunately minimal. The books are already written and laid out. Barring some unforeseen disaster (knock on wood), they will be delivered on time. If we get a lot of orders, shipping and handling will be a challenge, but we should be able to handle it without any problems. I've tried to provide enough slack time to ensure rewards are delivered promptly and will be working full-time on this project until it comes to fruition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
