About

Preserve the Historic Sea Island = JOHNS ISLAND!!

Johns Island is being overrun with housing development, in fact 81% of Charleston City's Housing has dropped here in the past 10 years. There is a smell, a feeling, a palpable wisdom of Johns Island that is literally getting bulldozed out of recognition. We can not stand by idle. We will not lose the essence of this truly special place!

We are in desperate need of community space that represents our home.

Before going further into WHY we need to SAVE this space, we give thanks and recognition to the dedication of our mentor Mr. Bill Saunders for all his guidance for this mission.  The living history that he embodies is powerful as we work to continue his legacy into the future as he wishes, for everyone (1111).  Scroll further down for the link to recordings of his speaking truth and stories recorded for the Smithsonian.

WADE IN THE WATER and JOIN IN THIS MISSION.

Not so long ago, Johns Island was a place where you could take a walk, know your neighbors and access water and locally grown food. We will not be developed out of our own homes and resources—not today or ever!

HERE'S OUR COMMITMENT.  WE WILL:

  • PROVIDE a nature preserve and community/event center that focuses on history, health, families, music and nature.
  • PROTECT this property from becoming 6,000 more condos or worse, by making it a nature park with year-round children's programming.
  • FOCUS on the true farming, migrant and Gullah culture, storytelling and learning the rich history of this sea island.
  • ENSURE our farmers keep their produce moving and that the wisdom holders and young entrepreneurs spread the living history of our elders into the future by creating circular economy opportunities.

Our Phase One includes 24-hour farm produce and local goods store, as well as Public Access to Water, children's programs, cultural-historic education, music events and prevention from further flooding and other solution offerings to Johns Islanders. Phase two includes a community center gathering space and expansion of all programs with greater opportunity for circular economy as well.

  • PAW = Public Access to Water which is lost on the island except for under the Limehouse Bridge
               1) fishing and meditation docks
               2) life jackets, kayaks, boards, boats, amenities
               3) picnic area

  • Connection to Culture & History = Our mentor Mr. Bill Saunders is who guides us in providing such offerings for the community
               1) monuments and lessons of cultural stories
               2) interactive learning of history lessons through activities, storytelling and reenactments
               3) experiencing living history through interactions and developing relationships

  • Farm Store = There’s a food desert in the farmland which means little to no local produce in the grocery stores and few people actually going to the farms to get their produce
               1) local market highlighting local produce and goods
               2) centralized location for access to local food and household staples
               3) in cooperation with Bert’s Market on Folly Beach

  • Nature Programs on this Nature Preserve
               1) we plan to offer an after school forest and nature program for Johns Island schools
  • 2) build children’s lives in confidence and connection in the natural world through fort building, archery, kayaking etc.
               3) wild and free time in nature for children and the whole community
               4) in cooperation with Growing Spirit and Local Pulse - see testimonials by clicking our Instagram Link or Facebook

  • POND JAMS = music on the water with local talent for relaxing together in nature
               1) small stage for musicians and regular gathering events
               2) regular meeting space for children’s jam groups and artistic expression
               3) in cooperation with Awendaw Green

  • LAND DEVELOPMENT NEEDS = The city keeps building without proper infrastructure and flood plans
               1) there is space by the road where we will create a mock “bus stop” highlighting our infrastructure and transportation needs
               2) keeping this property as natural as possible will protect from flooding by keeping the water system and wetlands intact
               3) no motorized boats or pollutants will be allowed as we will ensure the environment under protection with our services always

We offer these solutions to Johns Islanders' needs and have everything in place with our lenders at the South Carolina Community Loan Fund. To secure the land, we need to raise $67K by Dec. 16, 2019 so that our lenders are secure in the first year's payment. We invite you to join us in this effort for everyone. 4 every 1.

All donations are tax exempted under CIRCA 1111.

LAND PLANS DEVELOPED

CIRCA 1111 development arm = Community Initiated Rightful Construction Agenda - developing space as the community initiates!

  1. Did you know that 81% of Charleston city's growth is now living on Johns Island?

  2. Did you know that all public access to water on Johns Island (home of migrant, farming and Gullah/Geechee cultures) is now unavailable?

We aim to create a nature preserve and community/event center that focuses on our heritage, health, families, music and nature. We aim to give public access to water.

The community needs gathering space where we focus on our cultures, our commonalities, and transform our society out of the current socio-economic separations, by creating cross cultural exchange thru the universal languages of music and food and common interest.

Everyone deserves access to food and water.

CIRCA 11:11 = Community Initiated Rightful Construction Agenda is designed to make solution centered offerings to the community based on what the community has initiated. That is the agenda. Solutions we are working on currently through this proposed development and even outside this development.

Phase 1:

Includes: Public Access to Water, Nature Programs, Fishing Docks, Kayak and Boat Availability, Walk Trail and ALL LOCAL MARKET highlighting Johns Island grown produce and local goods. Music and services will be regularly held.

Phase 2:

Creating a Multi Cultural Community Center, Expanded After-school Nature Programming, Heritage Classes, Music and Special Events, Outdoor Activities such as basketball, kayaking, archery, gardening, as well as food and beverage program ALL operating within sustainability.  This Center will offer the only space in the development area equipped to hold gatherings for large cultural, social, heritage, music and community based events. Outdoor theatre/drive in nights and fun for all ages are envisioned. Upstart entrepreneurs can work with us thru food and bev highlights, directors of business, and a special market geared toward the sharing of heritage items.

Another Solution: Local residents are constantly having to attend re-zoning hearings for people who want to change their rural zoning into a wedding event venue. You see, Charleston is the #2 wedding destination in the country, and the increasing pressure for wedding/special events venues on Johns Island threatens our rural zones constantly. This location on Maybank Hwy is zoned Industrial and therefore is intended for this type of use. We can offer an event center in the development corridor for these rural residents to reference in these public hearings and re-zoning issues as the correct way to go about and therefore not re-zone their rural area and roads. Local Pulse often represents at these hearings and post videos from them through Facebook and Instagram.

The sky is the limit for what we can do together. Local Pulse is us creating together. It's what we are doing. Within the mission of Preserve. Diversify. Sustain. We attain to be a role model to growing rural communities, proving that you can have your growth and preserve a beautiful way of life too.

AND:

The biggest risk currently is another party who is interested in making a higher bid on the property than we are. So time is of the essence so that we do not cause a stall in this plan.
