About

THANKS for your interest in our action-crime-thriller film, The Trade ! We're hustling to raise $25k to reach our goal! Here's why we need a crew of accomplices to bring our Filipino-American action crime thriller movie to fruition.

We very much appreciate if you share this with your family, friends, and community.

Read below to see what else we can do—with your help.

Director's Statement - Francis dela Torre

As we watched the last two years of the Academy Awards marred by controversy for lack of diversity, my dear friends who are Filipino American actors, who have been in the business for the last 25 years or so since they were child actors, screamed at Hollywood for what they decried as a lack of roles written for Asian American actors. They told me what a struggle it was for them to go into audition after audition where they were forced to play Mexican Americans, Indian Americans, even African Americans – every other ethnic role, except Filipino American. They were rightfully pissed at the Hollywood system that refused to see Filipino Americans in leading roles.

I told them that I understood, but that it wasn’t just Hollywood’s fault. And it certainly wasn’t my actor friends who are all dedicated and hardworking actors. I asked, where all the Filipino American filmmakers who are writing complex parts for actors to play? I looked at myself in the mirror and blamed myself.

I looked at films from my favorite era of American Cinema, the 1970’s, and remembered that actors like DeNiro and Pacino were considered ethnic actors at the time. But ethnic filmmakers like Scorsese and Coppola made great films in which these actors could shine.

Sure, Hollywood has to make a change. But we need to help them make it.

We, as Filipino American filmmakers need to make films compelling enough for Hollywood to pay attention.

When Spike Lee made She’s Gotta Have It about African Americans in New York City, Hollywood paid attention. It’s high time an American film was made about Filipino Americans. Because I live in Los Angeles, they will be Filipino Americans who live here in my stomping grounds.

I don’t claim to be Spike Lee or Martin Scorsese. They have earned their places in the pantheon of American Cinema. I’m just a struggling director named Francis dela Torre and The Trade was born out of necessity. Because I hope that the Filipino American voice is heard. I chose a genre that combines crime and drama because Filipinos have a reputation in America for being too nice. But I’m not that nice. My actor friends aren’t that nice. We’re all a little angry sometimes, just trying to make a living in a town where we fight not to be marginalized.

What lengths would you go to fulfill the American Dream?

In an attempt to quickly double their earnings, Nick and JC, two Filipino-American brothers pursue a drug deal to pay off their family’s debt to a violent crime lord. When a crucial drug deal fails, Nick’s wife and son’s lives are put at stake when they are kidnapped. With only 24 hours to spare, the brothers' relationship is put to the test when they are forced to betray each other in the process of fighting to save their family. In the style of 70s gritty crime thrillers and modernly influenced by movies like Martin Scorcese's The Departed and Jim Mickle's Cold in July, The Trade is an Asian-American action thriller.

Martin Scorcese's The Departed & Jim Mickle's Cold in July served as main inspirations.

"I chose this story about brothers, a modern take on Cain and Abel, because I am an only child. Every day I wonder what defines family, brotherhood. Is it blood? Is it something else, something more than biology? I hoped to find a bit of an answer through this film. And in doing so, I hope Hollywood notices that Filipino American men make every bit as complex a hero, villain, loved one, hated one, as any other race." - Director, Francis dela Torre

We've already hustled to get the script and cast complete. All the film needs is to continue current production efforts to compete the film in its entirety. This process is far from cheap, and the expenses add up quickly. With your help, we will be able to finish important scenes to our story and make the post-production process efficient. We aim to have this film completed by October, so that it can premiere at the Cinematografo Film Festival. In the near future, we plan on targeting mainstream film festivals globally.

Okay, let's talk business, friend. The majority of this money will go toward post production! The reach of this film is somewhat limited to the amount of work that is put into things like sound design, color grading, and editing.

Since we plan on putting on The Trade into major film festivals, we'll need your help in funding for submitting it to festivals, attending festivals, organizing screenings, and campaigning for distribution deals (very pricey process!). With the generous help of our accomplices, we are confident that this film will reach a large audience.

Wait, tell me again why I should do this deal?

Because you believe in the project. Because you know that there are storytellers like us that can create a crime thriller that's inclusive and told from a different perspective. Plus, the rewards aren't so bad.

Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?

We appreciate any deal you can offer us in our hustle to create this film. If you decide you want to raise your pledge for a better deal or reward, we ain't stopping you. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage My Pledge” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

Is the pledge amount publicly displayed?

Nope. Only you and the project owner will be able to see your pledge amount.

What’s all-or-nothing funding all about?

If we reach our goal, then your credit card is charged. If we don’t, then it isn’t.

Can I get updates on The Trade?

Of course. Send us an email through this Kickstarter profile. We will be sending updates during production as well as post-production. You are family now.

Risks and challenges

The Trade is an independent production. As such, we don't have all the luxuries of big budget productions. This means that all the money will be put on-screen with minimum contingency for any incident. The biggest risk in any independent production is production delays, whether resulting in actor schedules, technical problems and other unforeseen circumstances.

However, the team working on The Trade is a small, agile crew that adapts well to challenges on the set.
