Cinema Project works to promote public awareness of avant-garde cinema from the past and present.

Cinema Project is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to bringing the most exciting and boundary-pushing experimental film and video art to Portland, Or. The majority of our financial support has come from local and national grant funding organizations, like the Regional Arts & Culture Council, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, whose three-year project grant we recently completed. However, these funds are restricted to specific program related fees, leaving things like operating and administrative costs and even basic expenses for our regular programs underfunded. We're at a critical point in our funding cycle as the Warhol and other grants have ended and we work towards securing our next long-term grant. It may not be the end of the world, but this is certainly the End of the Warhol for us! Cinema Project needs your help. Your donation of any amount will make our fall 2011 and spring 2012 seasons a reality!

Where does the money go?

  • Venue and theater rentals
  • Film and video rentals
  • General administrative and overhead costs (you know, things like office supplies, printing costs, and insurance... boring but critical!)
  • Projector and equipment maintenance¬†
  • Artist honorariums¬†

What are we showing and who are we bringing?

We've got an amazing season lined up for the fall and are hard at work preparing for the spring. Visiting artists this season include Super-8 maven Helga Fanderl, abstract 16mm filmmaker Colleen Fitzgibbon, and finally, in December, Brigid McCaffrey. This fall also sees the final three installments of our Textural Spaces series, a year-long look at architectural and spatial experience within the cinematic context, with a focus on American landscape. The series includes work from James Benning and Sharon Lockhart, as well as a look at experimental architecture through the lens of the 1970s.
