Revoltoso is a stop-motion short film about the decision to become an artist.
It is a film about cinema itself, set on 1913 in Mexico. Jabalito, a small one-eyed boar, is on the scene of one of the first filmed wars in history: the Mexican Revolution. Of all the wild boars that inhabit Don Gonzalo’s hacienda (industrial ranch) he is the only one not fully domesticated. He prefers to enjoy his freedom often creating chaos in the place where he lives. In the revolutionary confusion, Jabalito accidentally discovers cinema.
We have a fascination with handmade and optical special effects, which were used and developed since the invention of cinema. For this project, we decided to never use green screen, do CGI composites or add elements in post-production. The only thing we allow ourselves to do is erase the rigs used for character support. Solving every visual challenge without a computer has been one of our biggest obstacles, but perhaps the most rewarding one. We believe that the look and feel generated by this method is beautiful and unique.
In the investigation and exploration process, we found the visual identity of Revoltoso in Cubism. Cubist artists were inspired by the way in which space and time were portrayed on a flat surface through cinema. They found a very uncommon way to express their vision of a fast and changing reality. We like to think of Jabalito, our protagonist, as a vanguard artist who happens to find his purpose in the midst of this revolutionary era. He’s a one-eyed visionary and, even when he hasn’t found his place yet, he stays true to his vision.
This style is reflected on every visual aspect of the production design of the film. We use geometry, texture and color to reflect the personality traits of every character.
Jabalito, the misshapen boar, is the hero of our story. His playful design reflects his particular way of being. He is authentic, unique, unpredictable and rebellious. Due to the lack of the right eye, he has developed a peculiar physique and a strange moving manner. This feature affects his entire personality. Jabalito’s shape comes from the fragmentation of a circle, the smoothest and most pleasant shape there is. He may be incomplete but at least he is trying to find his missing pieces. The most important artwork that inspires his design is a painting by the Mexican cubist painter Angel Zarraga.
Don Gonzalo is one with his hacienda; his design reflects this. He can camouflage within the walls. His form derives from the aggressive deconstruction of a triangle. His design is inspired in the analytic cubism of Braque and Picasso. His skin simulates an old rusty statue. Don Gonzalo thinks of himself as a monument, which should be admired.
The Photographer is completely defined by his camera and his profession. He is a quiet and neutral man. He is designed according to the deconstruction of wooden cubes that resemble a cinematographic camera.
The twelve adult boars have been trained by Don Gonzalo to obey and behave. Their design is modular so they can act as a block with many heads. They are not independent, and represent the opposite of Jabalito. They are an obstacle to him; a brick wall that doesn’t allow him to move forward.
The people who integrate the Revolutionary Forces used to live and work in Don Gonzalo’s territories. Now, they are a menace for the hacienda, Don Gonzalo and his boars. They are built with ordinary materials such as corn leaves, paper, cardboard, and newspapers. Engravings by the famous Mexican artist Guadalupe Posada, appear in many parts of their bodies. Their shapes are asymmetrical and contain a lot of ferocious angles.
The Axolotl, also known as Mexican Salamander, is a curious and fun amphibian that lives exclusively in Mexico. In our story, they live in Don Gonzalo’s fountain, aqueduct and puddles. Their appearance reflects their relaxed and youthful lifestyle. They are designed with organic and simple shapes with almost no texture. The most important piece of inspiration for their look comes from Latin American cubist painter, Carlos Merida.
We need your help to finish Revoltoso. Kickstarter gives us the opportunity to reach the international community of film & animation lovers, art enthusiasts and design fanatics. We’ve been working in this project for almost three years now. When we started, we didn't imagine how difficult it was going to be. We decided to build everything from scratch in order to learn how to do it again for future projects. We are proud to say that, indeed, we have constructed absolutely everything.
The money collected will be used to complete the last production stages, and in that way assuring that Revoltoso be finished on time. We will complete the construction of a few things we are still missing, like a couple of sets and props that remain undone because of financial issues. We will be able to afford the expensive post-production processes that require equipment that we currently don’t have access to. And finally, we will be able to pay for all the festival submission fees, postal shipments and any other distribution expenses so that Revoltoso can be watched everywhere.
Our goal is $44,000 CAD but more economic support will let us improve our processes, finish earlier and submit the film to more festivals around the globe.
Movie production is hard work but it’s also very rewarding and we’ll be glad to share some of the fun with you, by offering a Private Screening of Revoltoso. We believe it’s not the same thing to watch a movie all by yourself than with a group of people, where you can feel their reactions and create a unique, shared experience. We want Revoltoso to be seen everywhere, that’s why we are offering this reward.
Many of the rewards include a Private Screening. The idea is for you to become a distributor of Revoltoso and part of the team. You will be able to offer a private screening even when we participate in festivals, as long as it’s private and free. You can invite your friends and family to watch it. It doesn’t matter if it is in your living room or in a big venue.
You and your friends could be some of the first people to watch this film.
Cinema Fantasma is the company producing Revoltoso. We are a Mexican studio integrated by young people with multiple backgrounds and a variety of talents. We create the films and art projects that we would love to see and enjoy. “Ghost Cinema” is the translation from our Spanish name. Even though ghosts are usually scary, we like to think that we are a friendly ghost.
Thanks to a youthful impulse, we take advantage of every new experience to materialize ideas into innovative projects. We believe that we don't need to go with the flow to bring to life the inanimate. We retake techniques that are part of film history, and give them a place in our present.
We are convinced that the success of Revoltoso will bring more opportunities to develop new, exciting and unique projects. We foresee a great future; this is why we are doing all of this.
These are Roy and Vonno Ambriz, the wacky brothers and Directors of Revoltoso and Cinema Fantasma.
Over these three years of creating Revoltoso, many people have been involved with the project in different ways. Through teamwork, we were able to reach this point. Cinema is a collaborative effort, a process of sharing and learning.
As you can see, there are a lot of tremendous people who work here. The flow of different ideas and perspectives, enables us to enrich and perfect our daily work. It’s not easy to make a stop-motion film, but we work very hard every day to make this happen. We want to thank you for helping us out to achieve our dreams.

Risks and challenges
Perhaps our biggest risk is not being able to finish on time. This project requires a lot of meticulous work by numerous people. Mistakes happen and sometimes it is necessary to do reshoots or readapt some chores which can impact our planned timeframe. Nevertheless, our prime objective is to never put the quality of our film at stake. Schedules and workflows may vary but we will never be satisfied with anything less than excellence in story, image, or sound.
By now, we have almost finished the construction of sets, props, and characters. With the money we get from our backers, we will be able to finish the post-production and send Revoltoso to many festivals around the world. With our goal covered, we can ensure the project will be finished on time and that you will receive your rewards.
There is no way to know if we will be able to compete in all the festivals we wish, but we guarantee you to do anything in our power to make this happen. Many of the rewards will be sent when we finish the film, others will be sent when our festival run starts, and some others until it finishes.
We feel confident about our capacity to overcome obstacles, for we have been working for three years with an extremely tight budget and, somehow, we have managed to create a very complex project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
